Portia de Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres attend the world premiere of “Finding Dory” in Hollywood, California.

And now comes the most challenging part of any celebrity style blogger’s career: assessing the style choices of Ellen DeGeneres.

For good or ill, this has been her style for a long, long time and there’s not much point in urging her to change. Not that we would ever suggest she start strapping on heels and shapewear so she can put on the latest in cocktail dresses. It’s just that there are much better and more stylish ways to go than “14-year-old at the mall circa 1998” for a mature woman who’s not into most womenswear options.

Put it this way: If Portia was attending the premiere of her husband’s new movie dressed like she is here, and he showed up in a t-shirt and sneakers, wouldn’t you think that rated a little bit of an outcry? By all means, wear comfy shoes and unfussy clothes, if that’s your thing, but if your spouse is in a gown and full hair and makeup, shouldn’t you try and meet her halfway and maybe pick a shirt with buttons and a jacket with a little more formality to it?

Granted, you could easily make the argument that Portia’s a bit overdressed for the premiere of a cartoon she’s not even in. But we’ve seen Ellen dress up just a little bit when the occasion called for it and she managed to still look like herself each time. We get that Disney cartoon premieres aren’t always formal occasions, but the optics here are just a little off. You’d never think the one on the right was the star of the movie.
