Ellie Kemper at “The Secret Life of Pets” New York Premiere

Ellie Kemper attends premiere of “The Secret Life Of Pets” at the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in New York City.

In terms of red carpetry, a summertime cartoon premiere is kind of its own thing. You’d be criticized for showing up in something too attention-seeking (like something tight and revealing) or too grandiose (a couture gown more appropriate for the Oscars. And you can bet if you’re a ladystar who voiced a cartoon character, your male co-stars are going to show up looking like they’re in the Home Depot parking lot, looking for work.

The best thing a gal can do for herself in this situation is to pick something cute and photogenic, but casual.

And if you’re a pregnant ladystar at a cartoon premiere, then you can pretty much wear whatever the hell you want. We don’t particularly love this dress. The sleeves and neckline look like hospital scrubs and we don’t think the print is very pretty. But she’s fine. She’s comfy and picture-ready. It may not be perfectly to our tastes, but it’s serviceable. We just wish she’d picked yellow or blue flats instead of the black pair, which do nothing for the look.
