Taylor Swift attends the “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
We’re just gonna say it:
CHRONICALLY, TERMINALLY BASIC.
Are we expressing ourselves well? Is our meaning coming across?
Look, this isn’t a bad look on its own merits. There’s a certain sci-fi chic feel to it that works well for her.
But the Met Gala is the one night of the year you’re really supposed to pull out all the stops on your style choices. And Girlfriend here was hand-selected by Anna Wintour to co-host the event. That means you don’t show up in a party dress ready to hit the dance floor. You should be showing up in couture so jaw-dropping that you can barely move.
But that’s just us.
She had not only the opportunity but we’d argue the responsibility to set the tone for the night by embodying the theme and the spirit of the Met Gala. She just looks like she’s going out clubbing.
Granted, the whole “Manus x Machina” thing was a bit hard to parse, but basically, it’s about the creation of fashion art through the acceptance and use of technology in the process. Tay – and a lot of other guests – took that to mean “dress sci-fi,” but that’s pretty outrageously reductionist. The ones who really got what the night was about showed up in fashion that forced you to look at it and wonder how it was made. Tay’s outfit just makes one wonder how much it cost.
