Hey, Boo.

It’s a bit of a shame that the pants are too short, because the rest of this ensemble is pure gorgeousness. We love that he was one of the few male celebs to try and do something at least a tiny bit interesting.

There was some pushback against our Idris Elba and Rami Malek posts yesterday, because a few people felt that we were going too easy on the guys and saving all our criticisms for the women. Fair enough, but the men invited rarely every get the opportunity to collaborate on some sort of avant garde or jaw-dropping look the way so many of the women do. They are expected to show up in tux or tails and most of them aren’t given any further resources than that. The designer who invited them will assure that they have something appropriate to wear, but very few of the designers who invite celebrities produce any sort of cutting edge menswear. And since the theme of the night was about haute couture techniques, all the men were pretty much SOL on working the theme into their outfits.

Bottom line: Very few male celebrity attendees are going to want to push the envelope on their fashion choices because culturally, we tend to savage men who do that sort of thing and because most celebrity guys have no facility with anything outside the norm. It’s basically bad PR for the celeb and not-great PR for the fashion house if a guy tries to do something a little outrageous. Look at Kanye yesterday. Sure, he wore a big glittery jacket, but the rest of his ensemble was as duded-up as possible: ripped jeans, undershirt, and boots. We’d love it if the guys showed up channeling Prince or Bowie and really getting into the fashion of the night, but we really can’t blame any celebrity guy for opting out. As long as they show up in formalwear that suits and fits them, we have no complaints.
