Met Gala 2016: Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton

Posted on May 03, 2016

Alicia Vikander attends the “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

In terms of dressing according to the Gala’s theme (which is not required, which means all the pretty little princess gowns of the night are not included in this assessment), the attendees chose one of three ways to embody it.

1. Dress in intricate couture that plays up the themes of man vs. machine by displaying such technical intricacy that anyone viewing the garment will pause to wonder about its genesis.

2. Dress like a robot.

And finally…

3. Just put on crazy shit and call it a day.

Girl, no.

We’re usually fans of the idea of going off the beaten path of fashion – especially when we’re talking about mainstream starlets, who’d have every reason to want to remain as conventional as possible. But we can’t do it this time. We can’t heap praise on this just for being different. Because it’s something else besides just “different.” It’s also stupid. And ugly.

One thing’s for sure: It’s pretty sure to top all the year-end “Worst Dressed” lists, which is, we suppose, a kind of accomplishment.
