Kristen Bell in Philosophy at the 2016 NBCUniversal Upfront Presentation

Posted on May 18, 2016

Kristen Bell attends the 2016 NBCUniversal Upfront Presentation in New York City.

This is why we always say good style is about the right garment on the right person at the right venue. Consider Kristen:

And now consider Sarah Paulson, who we featured about a month ago wearing the same dress:

Two thin blonde white women in the exact same outfit and yet the overall feel of each look is totally different.

We kinda hate to say this, but we think it suits Kristen a little bit better. Sarah Paulson has an affinity for wearing odd, severe or unusual ensembles, but we’ve long held that there’s a “January Jones effect” when it comes to fashion of the edgier variety. That is to say, sometimes a dress with a little bit of weirdness or severity to it looks better on a lady who does nothing to challenge or fight with the design. Sarah’s got the severe hair, heavy eye makeup and pale lips, but from the neck up, Kristen here looks like she’s about to shoot a Mentos commercial. In other words, Kristen’s styling is very standard and basic (to a somewhat boring extent), but we find that it sets off the dress a little better than Sarah’s slightly edgier styling.

And look, we hate using the term “edgy” to talk about the very narrow set of restrictions that come with red carpet style. We don’t really think this dress is so odd or off the beaten path. It’s just that it’s a bit more than most celebuladies would try to pull off for a picture-taking scenario. Kudos to Kristen for picking the dress and kudos to her style team for knowing that you only needed to style her like Kristen Bell to make the dress work for her.
