“I’m being trollied on twitter!”
Those crazy broads are back, darlings! Let’s hope the film’s a hit, so the gays and the middle-aged ladies can all have a movie to go to together! It’s been a long time since Mamma Mia and we’re all long overdue for a night of hooting and hollering, wouldn’t you say?
Of course, there’s the question of whether it looks any good…
And it does! We laughed way more during this trailer than we did for the Ghostbusters one. There’s always the possibility that every funny bit in the film was included in the trailer, but frankly, Jennifer Saunders was never the type of writer who had trouble crafting jokes. If there are 20 funny bits in the trailer, in all likelihood, there are another 200 in the film. Our concern about this film was always with the tone of it. As we said, Saunders is a dense and funny writer, but she can sometimes get the tone completely wrong and inject a little too much darkness or cynicism into her comedy. There was also the concern that her comedy may be a bit behind the times, but part of the reason the time is ripe for an Ab Fab film is because the fashion world has become even more powerful, ridiculous and culturally important than it was in the Ab Fab TV series’ heyday. In other words, the fashion world, in the 20+ years since AB Fab first parodied it mercilessly, actually became more like the parody. The British fashion world in particular seems to have totally embraced Pats and Eddie as full-on icons.
Also – and this can’t be stated strongly enough – everyone and everything looks… well, fabulous:
In a totally ridiculous sort of way, of course.
One thing not seen in this trailer, which can only be seen as a good sign: the white actress cast to play a Japanese fashion designer, which sparked some protest and controversy several months back when Margaret Cho found out about it and spoke up. We don’t know if she was cut from the film, but we hope so. This looks too good to mar with outdated racial comedy. We hope someone talked them into cutting her out completely.
