Sigh.

We’re not just typing “sigh.” We’re really sighing, you guys. Loudly and dramatically.

We’re not huge fans of the wide, plunging neckline set in a look that could otherwise pass for office wear. Having said that, we think we might actually like this look for itself. Our exasperation is not so much with this dress as it is with her overall style approach lately. It’s just too deadly-serious for us. As we’ve noted before, she’s transitioning into Serious Actress mode as far as her image goes. Whether it’s conscious or not, it’s a decent strategy to start looking the part when your work is getting more and more buzz and attention, which will hopefully mean major awards down the line. It’s all good and well thought out. But we’d give anything to see her loosen up just a bit on the style front. Wear something funky or quirky – especially at something like an upfront, which is typically fairly casual from a style perspective. We suppose it could come across like we’re asking her to be something she’s not or we’re giving her the style equivalent of asking her to smile more, but that’s not it. She doesn’t have to be fun and frivolous if that’s not her thing. No one’s suggesting she come out in a tutu or anything. But we think you can do a breezy sort of casual-confident look for her in, say, the classic ’70s Lauren Hutton sporty mode. That would suit her well, not ask much of her, and still allow her to come across as intelligent and focused without making her look stuffy or grandiose.
