“The Hateful Eight” actress Jennifer Jason Leigh attends the 2016 Film Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica, California.
If there’s one truly surprising thing about the 2016 acting awards season…
… it’s that we’re going to reach its end with a newfound respect for JJ Leigh.
Oh, we’ve always liked her as an actress. And we enjoyed poking a bit of fun at her when it became obvious that the world of the red carpet was an alien one to her, full of strange customs and people that she didn’t understand. But God bless this lady, she has been marching up and down every red carpet put in front of her, in an array of high fashion and uncomfortable shoes, even when it was obvious that she’d rather be anywhere else. We can’t help but appreciate when a star really puts the work in on a poledance. Even better, despite her apparent ambivalence about fashion, she consistently stepped out in looks that ranged from acceptable to interesting to flat-out fabulous on her (although to be fair there were few instances of the latter). What we’re trying to say is, she was faced with something that was strange and not intuitive for her, but she barrelled through it, learning along the way and getting better at it over time. She may not be at Lea Michele levels of posing (and thank God for that), but several months ago, we’d have assumed a moment like this:
Was completely outside her range.
The outfit’s cute enough and even now the posing comes off a little awkward, but JJ? You WERQ the SHIT out of this moment, lady. Brava! Here’s to awkward people, sucking it up and doing what doesn’t come naturally in order to play the game. How can anyone not relate to that just a little?
