“Carol” actress Rooney Mara attends the 88th Annual Academy Awards at The Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.
There are definitely things about this look that we don’t like. The cutout being the most likely one, but not necessarily the most glaring. There’s the weird shadowing around the crotch, not to mention those strangely unflattering panels that sit on the hips. But any specific complaints we have all come down to the same single, overriding issue. This dress is overdesigned.
We’re always so much more receptive to the odd and strange by the time we get to the Oscars red carpet. After months of covering the awards show poledance, we’ve hit the wall on safe gowns and pretty party dresses. And since the Audreybot here is pretty much Girl Number One when it comes to the odd and strange on a red carpet, we’re inclined to like this look more than we probably should. Bottom line: she brings high-fashion severity to the mainstream Hollywood red carpet and very few people even make the attempt. We could do without the pinhead effect, but the dress itself couldn’t be more perfect for her.
