“Carol” actress Cate Blanchett attends the 27th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala at the Palm Springs Convention Center in Palm Springs, California.
Welcome back, darlings! It’s a new year and that means new and exciting opportunities for judging celebrity style choices. Let’s dive right in, shall we?
Just kidding, dolls. Love it, actually. It occurs to us that Miss Cate rarely does “retro” and when she does, she tends to skip past the sixties and the fifties and dives right into 1940s-style chic. It makes a certain amount of sense. Her looks tend to call to mind some Old Hollywood divas in the Joan Crawford mode, so it’s perhaps not a surprise that she tends to look really good in, say, high-necked sleek gowns with accentuated shoulders. This is not a literal take on the ’40s, but it’s a very smart way of appropriating certain aspects of the period to construct a look that says “modern” but also “Hollywood royalty” at the same time.
Love the color and the ruching. The applique/embroidery is perhaps a bit much, but the dress would be boring without it. Not super-crazy about the wide bracelet-length sleeves, which seem to just sort of hang off her, but credit to her for knowing that a bracelet sleeve demands an eye-catching bracelet.
