Darlings, The Wiz Live! made its debut last night and as you might expect, we have OPINIONS to put forth – and that’s exactly what we did when we sat down very early this morning to record our podcast. We’ll be putting that up later today, but we thought we’d, first, highlight the absolutely stunning sets and costumes with the following shots as well as open up the floor to y’all to give your thoughts.
In short, they nailed the hell out of it. Carrie Underwood and Allison Williams must’ve spent the night getting drunk because almost all of the issues that plagued The Sound of Music Live! and Peter Pan Live! were not to be found here. You had a bevy of pop performers rather than Broadway vets, which meant there was a much better command of the camera on display. People like Mary J. Blige, Amber Riley and Ne-Yo just naturally have an understanding of how to perform for millions by standing in front of a camera. Second, you had much more modern and accessible material. Third, you had a much more sophisticated understanding of how to use the stage in a production like this. Rather than the sweeping camera moves and detailed sets of the previous attempts, The Wiz Live! went for a much more impressionistic design (those video screens were brilliant) and much less hyperactive camera work, allowing the sets and performers to drive the action, rather than the director and camera operators.
And can we just talk about that MEGQ-queer, “Paris is Burning”-style Vogue ball that was the Emerald City? How freaking fabulous was THAT?
Much more to come in our podcast later today, darlings. What did y’all think?
