Pop Style Opinionfest: TV Musicals and Oscar Drama

Posted on December 04, 2015

Ooooh, girl. We had some things to get off our chest this week.

First, you just know we had to spend a good forty minutes gushing the hell out of this:

We get into ALL OF IT, from Amber’s facial expressions to Uzo’s hair and down to issues of lighting and camera placement. You know us, darlings. Once we get started on the opinionating, we can really build up a head of steam. And you might be surprised to hear our thoughts on whether or not these live TV musicals would be improved by having a live audience.

Then, once we’ve exhausted all the topics possible in re: All things Wiz Live!, we turn towards our much beloved For Your Consideration screeners, which tend to pile up this year due to our (proud) membership in GALECA, the Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association. We give you our spoiler-free thoughts on Suffragette, with Carey Mulligan, Meryl Streep and Helena Bonham Carter, Legend, with Tom Hardy, and The Danish Girl, with Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander. All three films tend to buckle under the weight of their self-importance, but there are good performances and beautiful costuming and scenery in all three. Unfortunately, The Danish Girl has some problematic perceptions of transgender experiences and Eddie’s performance was as shallow as a puddle.

We warned you: opinions galore, darlings.
