We must not be in a very forgiving mood. Maybe it’s because we fear she’ll steal Kiki Dunst’s award away from her. Whatever the reason, we’re looking at this and all we can think is, “Uh-oh.”

See, she really started rocking the shit out of her fashion recently, first when she hooked up with Tony Bennett, but then she really ramped it up when the costume designer of American Horror Story showed her how good she can look, which presumably spurred her on to step up her style game. But for a long stretch prior to that – the Dark Years, we’ll call them – Steffi went through this period where she kept trying to use fashion to do some sort of street performance art, but always wound up looking cheap and unpolished – as opposed to looking cheap but in a fun, costume-y sort of way, which she can more than pull off when she sets her mind to it.

What we’re leading up to here is what we’ve long considered to be Gaga’s one persistent style problem, whether she’s working classic looks, as she’s doing here, wearing a costume for an impromptu bit of performance art, or putting on an avant garde fashion show; she often fails to polish the look to a perfect finish. For someone whose entire career is heavily influenced by her personal self-expression – specifically how she expresses herself visually, through clothing, makeup and wigs – there was always this whiff of Club Kid DIY to her looks. And hey, that can be fun, but once you’ve got access to couture and you’re working on an international stage, a certain level of perfection can make all the difference. Not to start a war or anything, but that was something Madonna knew back in her heyday.

What we’re trying to say here is this: What could have been a classically chic head-turner of a look is instead little more than a poorly fitted suit, a bad lip color, and the wrong shades to pair with it. Girl, we say this with love, but you needed to shoot for Deneuve in her prime for this one.
