Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell attend the closing night gala premiere of “The Big Short” during AFI FEST 2015 presented by Audi at TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California.
Three men, more or less appropriately dressed and groomed for the venue … and we’re not feeling any of it. Everybody gets points for putting the effort in, but none of them actually look what we’d consider their best. The Johnny Cash ensemble and Colonel Sanders beard is not the best way for Christian Bale to be presenting Christian Bale to the world. Steve Carrell is lost somewhere under that Clark Kent styling and bland suit. We wouldn’t expect trendiness or edginess from him, but we think he’s much better off if he loosens up just a bit. There’s no need for him to go full-on 1965 algebra teacher.
And the Gosling? He gets points for an interesting tie. And there’s certainly nothing wrong with the suit. It’s just … meh. We’ve seen him wear much more interesting looks than this.
But again, they all deserve minor backpats for knowing how to dress for these things and showing up like grownups. There are no style disasters here. Just three good-looking men, rendering themselves blander than they are through their style choices.
That … kinda doesn’t look that good.
