Maggie Smith attends the premiere of “The Lady In The Van” at Odeon Leicester Square in London, England.
She almost never does the red carpet, but we’re not remotely surprised that she has a simple, practical and elegant approach to it that suits her. It would be silly to expect the sexy grandma style of a Helen Mirren or even the occasionally grande dame-ish style of a Meryl Streep. She’s far too sensible and too obviously dislikes drawing attention to herself for any such styles to really work for her. This is the way to go when you’re Dame Maggie.
HOWEVUH… (and c’mon, we know you love her, but you’ve gotta give us this one)
We think it’s likely she’ll be in contention for the Oscar for this role and we think she might just be game to do the poledance one final time, so we’re going to draw up a chair, pretend like we know her, and offer some free and totally unasked-for advice.
While we think this is the right style for her, we don’t think it’s perfect. For one, the coat looks, frankly, a little cheap. If she gets a nomination, she should pick up her phone and call the people at Valentino to make a high end version of this for her. Also, there are simple things a lady of practicality and age can do to zhuzh up a look like this. One is put on a colorful necklace or pendant, the other is to pick a simple and comfortable pair of flats with a little embellishment to them or in a color that picks up elsewhere in the outfit. So remember these three things, Dame Maggie:
1. Colorful or sparkly or embroidered shoes
2. A statement piece of jewelry
3. Really expensive custom pieces from Italian design houses that would love to dress a legend
Off you go. Good luck!
