VMAs 2015: Amber Rose Sends a Message

Amber Rose attends the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. Her entourage included Blac Chyna wearing a dress with the same words on it, and two other attendees with the word FAGGOT painted on their clothes. “They call us sluts and whores all the time,” she told Kelly Osbourne, “So we just embrace it. I have slut written across my vagina…I wish I was a whore. My social life would be much more exciting.”

Honestly? This kind of works for us, given the venue. On a purely image level, this gets the job done. She’s making a statement using the best tools she has in her arsenal: her body and the likelihood that it will be photographed. Now, we wouldn’t presume to speak for her as to why she chose this look, but we think it’s a powerful statement to make at a venue and in support of an industry that increasingly requires women to either dress like clowns or dress like sex workers.

Granted, her explanation was slightly more self-serving, since it all appears to be a response to her online “haters.”

Even so, we can appreciate it when any celeb takes a red carpet moment and chooses to be provocative rather than worrying about her image or the product she’s selling. It’s not her place to be taking the word “faggot” back as some sort of empowering move, but again, we appreciate the attempt to juxtapose the high falseness of the average entertainment industry awards show with some hardcore realness and provocation. Whatever message she’s sending is muddy at best, but we can’t help respecting a well-executed “Fuck You” on the red carpet.

And from a style point of view, we dig the Pop Art/Graffitti aspect of it. Although it’s clearly ripping off the work of Stephen Sprouse.
