Elizabeth Debicki in Lanvin at “The Man From U.N.C.L.E. ” Toronto Premiere

As a style direction, we like this MUCH better for her than that skin-colored Valentino confection she wore the other day, but she’s still demonstrating some difficulty with the whole accessorizing and styling thing.

We’ll start off by saying the skirt/pant hybrid is more than a little awkward but once again, we really appreciate her bringing something fresh to the red carpet, much like her co-star. We’re sensing Lupita-like tendencies among both of them to slightly redefine what can be done in this milieu. We hope the film’s a huge hit just for that reason alone; so we can continue to watch them parade high-end fashion in front of our eyes; high-end fashion that isn’t just a succession of pretty gowns or cocktail dresses.

Anyway, all effusive praise aside, girlfriend seemingly has no idea how to finish these looks off. We don’t think she should mimic the look book exactly, but the styling in that shot pretty definitively demonstrates that at the very least, you need an interesting belt and kick-ass pair of shoes to make this work. And it definitely needed jewelry more sophisticated and attention-seeking than that. The whole look comes off unfinished or not completely thought-out. This could’ve been a Tilda-esque gasp-inducing moment, but the finishing let her down.
