First, we will say that these are damn fine costumes, both from a style perspective and from a historical accuracy one. The looks have been nailed.
But real quick: What’s the first movie you think of when you scroll through them?
While we’re sure plenty of adorable contrarians will weigh in with other answers, we’re going to assume that many of you thought of American Hustle, which trod this ground fairly recently and to fairly high acclaim. Not that no one’s allowed to touch the same era, just that these literally look like they could’ve been taken off the backs of Bradley Cooper and Amy Adams and given to these two.
Or maybe we’re just getting a little tired of the late ’70s/early ’80s as the go-to period of choice lately for period dramas and films – especially when all the characters get dressed like they’re going to spend the entire story standing outside Studio 54.
Still, they look good, which is also not a surprise, since they both tend to embody, Jon Hamm and January Jones-like, a certain iconic look from the period. Like Hamm and Jones, these two look like they could be starring in a movie in 1979, or featured in a perfume or car ad. Cannavale looks way more at home in this kind of look than he did on Boardwalk Empire, for instance. And don’t even get us started on how wrong she looked in Wild West wear in Cowboys & Aliens. These are the right costumes for the right actors.
