Taraji P. Henson in Cynthia Rowley at “Empire” ATAS Academy event

Miss Taraji is serving up fabulous and stylish diva realness from the neck down, but we’re afraid we canNOT with what’s going on north of that point.

The dress is really standard and it’s doing its one and only job of serving up BODY. The color looks great on her and we dig the more textural elements. The shoes make a fun and fabulous way of finishing the look off with a little sparkle and pattern. Everything’s working so far.

But we’ve long noticed that she has makeup issues. That is to say, her makeup on TV tends to look amazing but her public appearance makeup is not only dicey and inconsistent, it sometimes distorts her features. We saw her up close last month at Fashion Week and her makeup looked pretty Cookie-Lyon-flawless, but nothing is working here, from her brow game to her lip color.  And without getting too far into the weeds as a couple of white guys telling a black woman how to do her hair, we’ll just say this: we like it more when it’s softer and she wears it down.
