Shailene Woodley in Ralph Lauren at the “Insurgent” London Premiere

Posted on March 12, 2015

Miss Shailene’s got another installment of The Thirsty Games* coming out, so it’s time for another poledance full of Begrudging Dresses. You see, a Begrudging Dress is a dress one puts on begrudgingly, like a little tomboy asked to be a flower girl.

Wow. We just accidentally stumbled on the perfect description of Shailene’s red carpet style.

That’s a pretty sharp dress that suits her well. The gold shoes make a pretty perfect punctuation point for the look. From the back, it looks like it could have been fitted to her just a skosh better, but for the most part, we’d call this a winning look for her.

But as with every look she ever wore on a red carpet, she looks like she stopped doing whatever it was she was doing all day (like hiking or gardening) and merely changed into a dress at the last minute. Aside from the shoes (which are kind of essential anyway), there’s no real attempt at styling here. Nothing was done with her hair or face. There’s no jewelry that makes any sort of impression. It’s all very “I’m doing this because I have to.”

And hey, we get it. No one loves doing things they don’t want to but have to. Our thing with her has always been to encourage her (as if she were actually hanging on our every word) to explore ways to be picture-ready without resorting to gowns and dresses that don’t suit her or make her happy. You wanna get your hippy-chick shit on, girl? Or indulge your pants-wearing tomboy self? Go for it. Just do it with a little style and wear pieces that are appropriate for promoting the hundred-million-dollar project you’re fortunate enough to head up. This isn’t a terrible look – in fact, it’s a pretty good one, all things considered – but it’s clearly not her personal style and she’s clearly not interested in doing anything but the minimum effort because of it.

*Saw the initial installment last month on TV. DEEPLY unimpressed.
