“Sometimes I wonder,” T mused to Lo, while exiting this show, “If Thom Browne wants to work in theater more than he wants to work in fashion.”
Not that he’s slumming on the fashion front. Far from it. But the fact remains that the man always puts on one hell of a jawdropping show. So much so, that we were extremely disappointed to see the pictures of this collection, all of which look like this:
Which is great and all, but you’d have no idea the entire show was staged in a mock 19th Century surgical theater straight out of a Thomas Eakins painting (and also your nightmares):
It was absolutely stunning – and of course, very, very weird.
As for the collection itself, it’s clearly not meant to be joyous and light. No, the overall feeling is one of an Edwardian funeral, with all the drama and severity that entails. But look past the shocking or depressing imagery and see how beautifully designed and tailored these pieces are. While there are definitely plenty of ladies who’d love to dress up like they were going to a funeral in 1910 and this collection gives them that option, the fact is these pieces individually are quite modern and even fashion-forward.
