What a breath of fresh air this collection was. Not that we have any issue with the current state of menswear, but it’s nice to see a collection that doesn’t buy fully into the ubiquitous slim-cut, highwater profile for men that has dominated the last few seasons. No, for fall 2015 Perry Ellis Creative Director Michael Maccari seemed to be taking us on a tour of this fabulous new vintage shop full of amazing prints, chunky sweaters, boxy silhouettes and even what looks like a leisure suit or two. There’s an old school feeling of utilitarianism in these looks, making them almost literally work-a-day clothes; another refreshing change of pace. Menswear collections have looked like a bunch of Euro college boys and barristers for a good while now, but this collection looks like a bunch of fantasy blue-collar guys with impeccable taste and flair decided to put on a show. It all feels very “next step” in terms of menswear.
