We breathed an enormous sigh of relief. Our prediction that she would bungle her Oscars gown turned out to have been wrong.
“Still Alice” actress Julianne Moore attends the 2015 Academy Awards at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, California in a custom Chanel gown embroidered with over 80,000 hand painted resin sequins and flowers of organza, tulle and sequins paired with Chopard jewelry.
It’s a colorless, beaded gown with equally colorless floral details. It’s impressive as hell that the Chanel petite mains managed to attach EIGHTY THOUSAND beads and sequins to this thing, but for all that effort (and the fact that it almost literally renders this dress priceless) you’d think there’d be… we don’t know… a little more to look at. It’s pretty and she looks very elegant. But as Oscars gowns go, it’s far from a memorable look.
This represents the fundamental problem with modern Oscars fashion: it’s too conservative. There’s a reason people fell all over Lupita last year (and continue to do so this year): it’s because she came along and said “You know what? I’m not playing it safe. I’m gonna be bold.” And she was, and everyone loved her for it. We’d hoped at the time that she represented some sort of sea change for celebrity fashion but nope. The A-Listers are all back to dressing like politicians’ wives this year.
But don’t listen to these two cranky bloggers, Julianne. You looked beautiful and despite their bitchy predictions, you didn’t screw it up. Attalady.
