Helen Mirren in Dolce&Gabbana at “Woman in Gold” Press Conference

Posted on February 10, 2015

If someone had said to us, “Picture this: a floor-length, body-con gown, all rendered in kelly green lace.” We’d probably have fainted dead away or run from the room screaming in horror. We’re dramatic that way. What we almost certainly never would say to such a thing is, “Sounds gorgeous! Let’s get Helen Mirren on the phone!” Mainly because we don’t actually have Helen Mirren’s number, but also because it’s a dress that sounds utterly hideous on paper.

Well, shut our mouths:

Queen Helen of the island nation of Fuckinfantastica, ladies and gentleman. Bowing is not optional.

She loves herself some D&G (and we suspect there’s some sort of contractual obligation), but they’ve been putting her in their patented “Sicilian widow drag” for a while now and to be perfectly blunt, a lady approaching 70 dressed in head-to-toe black lace is NEVER going to look fun or celebratory or “Check out my movie!” She’s always going to look like she’s burying her husband. Kudos to Dame Helen and her little Italian designer friends for figuring out that she’s a queen who needs herself some color in order to come alive.

LOVE the jewelry here.
