Cate Blanchett in Maison Martin Margiela at the Oscars

Okay, you got us, Cate. It’s not easy on a night like this, when we’re peering intently at every dress that passes in front of our eyes, but you managed to fool us into thinking this was perfect at first glance.

Then we saw the armholes.

And THEN we saw the back. We’re sorry, but this is the point at which Heidi Klum says goodbye to you in German and Tim Gunn hugs you before telling you to get the hell out of the building before they call security on you.

Great “first impression” look, though. The black velvet, the perfect fit, the stunning statement necklace (Hooray for obnoxiously large jewelry! We missed you!) – it’s all good. The ripped-off sleeves and ripped-open back? We cannot.

Y’know, we really dig the shape of her hair; how it’s swept off her face and all, but all the flyaways look bad to us. Then again, we suppose if the hair had been too polished, it wouldn’t have gone with the half-finished dress.
