Jennifer Lopez in David Koma on “Despierta America”

Posted on January 14, 2015

There are many ways an aging diva can present herself to the world. Jenny’s done the uberglam drag queen looks (just this week, in fact), but more and more lately, the goal seems to be less glam and more just straight-up crazy-dressing.

Girl, what even IS that?

It’s like a bunch of random elements thrown at a dress form and then awkwardly stitched together. It’s not fabulous or flattering or even pretty. And the craziest part of all? J Lo’s way too savvy about style to not know this. This is, we suspect, deliberate for the most part. It’s a somewhat tamer version of Madonna’s grill and driving gloves; a way to look like you’re really pushing the envelope somehow when in truth, you’re just plain dressing crazy because you’re unsure how to remain stylish while getting older. Five years ago, she was doing sleek, sexy Gucci and Roland Mouret styles, but as time has ticked on (to her clear annoyance), her looks have gotten showier and showier. And a lot of the time, we’ve loved the parade of divatude, but we’re noticing more and more of these try-hard looks on her lately.
