The only way this could’ve worked is if she’d really played up the “‘3os silver screen goddess” aspect of it, with finger waves in her hair and retro makeup and jewelry. But the problem with an approach like that for a dress like this is that it quite easily lapses into costume. We can appreciate why she’s got the modern hair and big diamond hoops (Which: fab, by the way), but they don’t really play well with the gown.
