In or Out: Selena Gomez in Versace

Posted on June 12, 2012

You know what? We’re feeling magnanimous today. Because even though our first thought upon viewing this was to make fun of it, we’re going to try and be a little open-minded.

Selena Gomez launches her debut fragrance at Macy’s Herald Square in New York City in Versace.

But it’s not easy, just so you know.

We often come up against the reality that what so-called “normal” people need to get out of their wardrobes is vastly different from what celebrities need to get out of theirs. In fact, we’d go so far as to say that’s the foundation of our red carpet coverage and why we tend to run shrieking from the idea that we should tell those so-called “normal” people how they should dress. Celebrities aren’t like us. That’s not exactly revelatory but sometimes you forget that, occasionally, the life of a celebrity will twist and turn and result in a situation like standing in the Herald Square Macy’s store looking like you’re ready to go swimming. You probably don’t find yourself doing those sorts of things often, but you don’t have your own fragrance, do you?

So the goal here was clearly to project an image of Fresh! Young! Summer! Sexy! But Not Slutty Like Some Of Those Other Girls! In other words, the outfit could be described in exactly the same language the fragrance she’s poledancing for could be described. In that sense: well done. Perfect branding symbiosis.

On a purely style level, it mostly works. We think the proportions on the shorts are pretty awful, but eschewing a belt and going for a slightly toned-down style of jacket were pretty good choices. We’re not convinced that jacket actually works with the look, however. And the shoes are just awful.  In fact, the shoes and the jacket look like something she ripped off the back of a publicist at the very last second; pieces more akin to office wear than a Versace two-piece.

Kittens make the final call, but we’re comfortable calling this one an OUT. Coulda worked, but the detailing is way off.

IN! Sassy!

OUT! Assy!

Catherine Zeta-Jones’ attempted time trip back to her twenties was considered ill-advised by the commentariat, who rose up as one and declared it OUT.
