In or Out: Maggie Gyllenhaal in Alexander McQueen

Posted on November 01, 2011

We came down pretty hard on Maggie the other day. We’re not sure, but “smells like nursing home pee” may have been the harshest thing we’ve ever said about an actress’ red carpet look. She deserves a prize for that. Instead, we’re going to assess her a second time, but gently.

And can we just say? We like Maggie, as much as you can like someone you don’t know at all, and we appreciate her off-the-beaten path kind of style. But we get very sad when we see her pair things badly or not completing the detailing on an outfit. See, that’s the thing: a lot of people think they only need to pick something weird and off-beat, but the rules remain the same. You pick the garment, and then you make decisions about shoes, jewelry, bag, hair, and makeup. A lot of the quirkier types in the style world miss that second half of the process, thinking you only need one statement-making garment to complete a look. This is our main issue with Maggie.

Although this time, she picked a relatively simple and classic white gown. What she didn’t pick is a BRA and that is making us sad. So close, Maggie. A simple white gown, an up ‘do, some hoop earrings. Not the most forward-thinking look in the world, but it can get any gal through the night if she doesn’t have the time to fuss with herself. But sweetie, we hate to sound whiny here, but you have to wear a bra with this dress. This is part of your secret ability to instantly make anything you wear, even an evening gown with a halter neckline, look like something a septuagenarian would wear. The hair’s not great in any instance, but when you combine it with the drooping boobage, you instantly add about 25 years to your age.

Such a simple, pretty dress. All you had to do was wear a bra, honey. Is that so hard? If nothing else, do it for McQueen. It’s what he would have wanted.

IN! It’s simple and classic and that’s a step in the right direction!

OUT! She couldn’t even get a white dress right without screwing it up?

Joely Richardson’s Christmas wrapping dress got a firm IN by the kittens, while Jessica Biel’s similarly themed Christmas tree-topper dress got an equally as firm OUT.
