Netflix’s “Mank” Looks Surprisingly Fun

We tend to be of the opinion that Old Hollywood pastiche is so overdone and revisited that it’s tough to make any new attempt look fresh. And sure, maybe there aren’t any wheels being reinvented here, but the trailer for Mank sure does make yet another cinematic visit to the days when Hollywood lived in tones of black and white look pretty entertaining:

Amanda Seyfried as Marion Davies looks like the casting of a lifetime and she appears to be having the right amount of fun with it. Of course Gary Oldman is always worth sitting with for a couple of hours, as is Charles Dance. We don’t know how much modern audiences will want to see a deep dive into the story behind Citizen Kane, but for any cinephile, this trailer makes it look like a great, juicy, gossipy, stylish time. To be fair, no one ever accused director David Fincher of producing lightly entertaining fare, so we tend to assume there’s going to be a second trailer released at some point; one that’ll come off decidedly darker in tone. If nothing else, the imagery is gorgeous and the cast is first-rate.
