Kate Mara in Giambattista Valli Couture at the Toronto Film Festival: IN or OUT?

Posted on September 13, 2017

Kate Mara attends the premiere of “Chappaquiddick” during the 2017 Toronto Film Festival in Toronto, Canada.

We’re putting this one up to a vote because our reactions to it keep changing.

We like the frock a lot; we can attest to that much. It’s sparkly and floral and sassy in a ramped-up Audrey Hepburn kind of way. But for such a tiny dress, it seems like there’s an awful lot of design being packed into it and we find ourselves wondering if the dress would be improved by scaling back on one of the elements (floral, beading, sequins). Certainly, those beaded shoulder caps don’t seem to help. It’s not an element that integrates well with the rest of the design and it tends to make her look like she’s constantly shrugging.

Also, the pumps and the Carolina Herrera hair aren’t exactly freshening this look up. Basically, our complaints come down to this being a pretty cute design that nonetheless comes off a little too socialite and slightly overdesigned. It’s up to you to decide if they have merit. Or even if you have complaints of your own. Or even if you just want to defend it like you made it. All perspectives are welcome, darlings! But we privilege the correct ones, of course.
