Miss Taraji served as the entirely appropriate host for Black Girls Rock! this year, and she took the opportunity to say a few things. To our enormous delight, because we live for this sort of thing, her language of choice was fashion.
In other words, girlfriend had some costume changes and she made sure each one painted a different picture of herself. Let’s take a look. And by that we of course mean “render judgment.”
First up, we have “Hard Taraji.” The makeup’s not great (although it’s likely to be stage makeup and not particularly red carpet friendly), but the hair is spectacular and there’s no denying Miss Lady showed up giving us all a lot to look at. The fit in the bust isn’t great, but we like the top half of this dress. It’s the super-tricky skirt that loses us.
Next we have “Soulful Taraji,” getting a little of her Al Green “Let’s Stay Together” self on. Avec bra. Honestly, there’s just not a thing to argue with here. Pretty much flawless as stagewear, it also happens to be a style that looks great on her. We wouldn’t mind seeing her try more suiting on the red carpet; bra exposure optional, of course.
This is – what? “Gothy High-Fashion” Taraji? That sounds about right. We wouldn’t have minded the hand-covering sleeves if this had been a gown, but as-is, the proportions are a little off. That belt looks like it only works if she stands absolutely still. The color looks nice on her and we like the idea of her in dark/edgy romantic style, but this frock looks a bit too complicated to wear.
And finally, we have “Thank You For Lending Me Your Dress, Halle” Taraji.
So Miss T, entirely through fashion and costume, let us know that she’s tough, soulful, edgy, romantic and sexy. Talk about nailing it. We may not love all elements of each look, but as an overall night of message-sending, it was A-plus Game.
