Cannes 2017 Style File: Julianne Moore in Sonia Rykiel and Chanel Couture

Posted on May 19, 2017

Miss Julianne is Cannes-ing the shit out of herself this year and we can’t say that’s a bad thing from the perspective of two bitchy red carpet bloggers such as we. If there’s one thing you can count on from Miss Julianne, aside from consistently excellent work as an actress, is a succession of non-traditional style choices when it comes time to promote said excellent work as an actress.

Oof. Honey, we’re afraid not.

This is a depressing start to what we’d hoped would be a post full of exciting, if the usual awkward fashions that Miss Julianne tends to favor. But this definitely isn’t exciting and we’re not even sure “awkward” is the right word for it. “Heavy” and “waist-obscuring,” “unphotogenic” and “dreary.” THESE are the words for it. Seriously, who goes to a party literally hosted by diamonds in something so bleh?

Admittedly, the earrings are gorgeous and we suspect this dress would work better in a different setting.

Now this is more like it. There’s the slightly cray Miss Julianne we’ve all come to expect. All things considered, this is not too bad. We love the color of the dress and her signature clunky black shoes don’t bug us this time. It’s a bit baggy and figure-obscuring, but it tends to look better from the side and besides, if the lady wants to wear a sack, at least she picked a really photogenic one.

Seriously though, that waist is bad.

There she is. There’s wacky Aunt Julianne.

We LOVE this. We’re a bit surprised by that, but we think it’s one of those instances where dress, wearer and venue are all in perfect alignment. She looks elegant, fun and glamorous. For Cannes, that’s like hitting the style trifecta.
