Met Gala 2017: Solange Knowles and Thom Browne Give Us The Weirdness We’re Longing For

Posted on May 02, 2017

Go on with yourself, Empress of Oddness. We’re loving what you’re laying down here.

We realize that opinions may differ on the matter.

One thing to remember when noting how few of the attendees wore designs by honoree Rei Kawakubo: many of the celebrities there are attending as guests of invited designers, which makes most of them somewhat obligated to wear something by that designer. This is another big reason why we try not to get too caught up in the idea of dressing to fulfill the theme. As long as people come in weird, eye-popping looks, they’re doing alright. Miss Solange did one better by choosing Thom Browne looks that work as homages to Kawakubo’s aesthetic. The only problem we have with this look is that it’s way too heavy for this time of year. Then again, it would be hard to mimic a Commes des Garcons look by wearing something light and breezy.

It’s a puffy coat with a train. We feel duty-bound to love it just for the level of cray. Add a doll’s briefcase and shoes designed by geometry teacher, and we’re swooning over the weirdness. Attalady. This is what it’s about.
