We’re just gonna jump straight to the press release:
“Orange Is The New Black Season Five Debuts Friday, June 9 on Netflix.
A riot sparked by Poussey’s death quickly escalates when the inmates gain control of the prison. Once they get a taste of power, chaos erupts in the halls of Litchfield. The unprecedented season will take place in real time and over the course of just three days, leaving the inmates’ lives forever changed as they are emboldened to fight for redemption, resolution and the respect they deserve. “
We’re not a hundred percent on this storyline, basically because we’re not convinced the show’s writing staff has a good enough handle on the nuances of it. Having said that, the idea of limiting the season to only 3 days of story time has real possibilities.
But we have to admit, it makes us a bit nervous. This is the kind of story point you can’t back away from once you dive into it. Either the lives of the characters really are significantly changed by the end of this season, which will no doubt disappoint and frustrate some of the fans of said characters, or the show does some sort of unlikely back-pedal, which will no doubt disappoint and frustrate fans of the stories. We’ll see. If nothing else, it’s an admirable risk, even if we’re not convinced it’s the story for this particular show to be telling. Either way, we’ll be checking in on the season and reviewing it here and there.
