Let’s Discuss The Hollywood Reporter’s “Most Powerful Stylists” Covers, Kittens!

We feel like we would be remiss in our duties if we didn’t check in on the most important magazine issue of this or any year, The Hollywood Reporter‘s ranking of the 25 most powerful stylists in the biz. For all the bitchery we sling at the work these people do, we can’t claim we don’t respect the ones at the top of the game. If it was an easy thing to do, way more would do it – and cheaply.

This is our way of saying we’re going to be nice (more or less) as we run down some of the covers featuring some of the highest ranking on the list posing with their clients. Honestly, all of these folks do really amazing work, despite our daily listing of grievances. They deserve the spotlight for a bit.

Now let’s judge them anyway.

 

 

Number 1: Karla Welch
Clients: Ruth Negga, Sarah Paulson, America Ferrera, Busy Philipps, Karlie Kloss, Lorde, Justin Bieber, Pink


Our favorite cover. They all look coordinated without looking repetitive. Like a bunch of super-glamorous witches in a coven that values shiny hair, puffy shoulders and a strong lip.

Number 3: Kate Young
Clients: Michelle Williams, Natalie Portman, Margot Robbie, Selena Gomez, Dakota Johnson, Sienna Miller

This looks like the poster to some wrist-slittingly depressing Scandinavian melodrama.

Which is to say: both appropriate and fabulous in its own way.

Number 6: Ilaria Urbinati
Clients: Tom Hiddleston, Casey Affleck, Donald Glover, James Marsden, Nina Dobrev, Bradley Cooper, Anya Taylor-Joy

Nice coordinating. Tom always did have a knack for working an oddly colored suit. And she deserves all the praise in the world for being one of the few people who could make one of those Gucci trompe l’oeil dresses work. She should’ve said no to the ball, though. Too matchy.

Number 7: Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn
Clients: Lily Collins, Hailee Steinfeld, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Biel, Gwen Stefani

This is all very glam in a very Bob Mackie kind of way – which we are inclined to love – but it’s just a skosh too samey. There’s sticking to a theme and then there’s putting everyone in the same dress, more or less.

It is a fab shot, though. It looks like a late ’70s perfume ad.

Number 21: Law Roach
Clients: Zendaya, Celine Dion, Ariana Grande


And this looks like an ad for the most expensive night-time soap opera ever produced. Which is to say, MEGA-fabulous.
