Nicole Kidman Wears the Quintessential “Float in a Parade” Dress at the SAG Awards

Posted on January 30, 2017

Except this time the parade is CARNAVAL and it’s FABULOUS.

No, really.

We don’t like the shape and plunge of the neckline but that is the only thing about the design that doesn’t appeal to us. In many ways, this is perfect for her. We’re always telling her to go the “Disney Witch” route, because she needs to stay away from pale colors and because dark fantasy looks really help her come alive.

Well, it turns out really colorful fantasy looks do the same thing for her.

We get it if some of y’all might be thinking that giant parrot-head shoulders are asking a bit much of you. One might reasonably argue that they’re tacky at the very least. Certainly, they don’t hold up well when we apply our “describe it out loud if you’re not sure” test.

But this is an instance where context is everything. We have never believed in hard-and-fast style rules (for the most part). Style exists on a continuum and is largely defined by context.

Put bluntly: She’s an actress approaching fifty – and we suspect she’d be the first one to point out what a difficult position that puts her in, career-wise and image-wise. She has floundered a bit in recent years on the style front, turning toward looks that sometimes didn’t suit her and sometimes actively made her look terrible. A woman like her, in her position, needs to find and cultivate ways of keeping her image and career fresh. And a woman in that position who looks like her (and by that we mean her pale and ethereal qualities) absolutely needs total boldness in her style choices when she’s posing for pictures. It sets off her looks and coloring really well.  Wisely, the rest of her styling is kept quiet, but complementary so as not to fight with the dress.

Is it a lot? Yeah, it’s a lot. But it’s the right kind of “a lot” for her. We doubt this dress would work nearly as well on, say, Salma Hayek.

And don’t be surprised if it winds up on a year-end “Best” list.
