Normally, after a major awards show, the first dozen or so posts we put up are all winners of major competitive awards and/or presenters. It’s rare for us to feature a lifetime achievement award-style recipient first.
Then again, no one ever heard an awards show speech quite like that one before. And considering the President-Elect is on social media attacking her for it as we type, we figured Miss Meryl earned the #1 spot of the morning.
We suspect 2017 will be the year when our “No politics, please” stance on celebrity style is going to be very difficult to maintain. They’re all gonna keep putting on couture and getting political on our asses when they do it.
Anyway, we gasped when we saw this the first time. Meryl has a long history of some very awkward red carpet choices. She’s so beloved – and probably more so after last night – that it’s practically impossible to critique her for it; especially since she doesn’t give the impression she cares about fashion all that much.
But this has a quality that Meryl’s style tends to lack. And it’s the most ironic quality of all, given who she is: drama.
But this? HIGH drama. In fact, it’s one of the most dramatic things she’s worn in years. Sure, the mirrors are perhaps a bit too heavy and the placement on the front looks a little like a bandolier. But she stood there telling a room full of artists exactly why they’re so important. She held a mirror up to her peers – and everyone else watching – and urged them to stand up.
Maybe it’s a coincidence that her dress so perfectly embodied her message. She’s certainly never been the type to take such a semiotic approach to her style. But we couldn’t get over how perfectly rendered she was for the speech she was giving. Sober, but colorful; sparkly but reflecting the world around her; mildly militant – with flowers.
Well done, Mary Louise.
