Services began at sundown and lasted several hours. Many were converted. Later, the two pontiffs took in some art and had a light meal in front of a wall of photographers, as befits the tenets of their church.

Call us bitches, but this is all some serious stagecraft. One thing Gaga in particular is very good at is the willful and deliberate way she elevates herself beyond being seen as a mere pop singer when she’s really selling something. Madonna was good at making herself an avatar of the zeitgeist with each new iteration but Gaga turns herself into something more iconic, more bound up in belief and emotion in an almost religious way.
