We’re not entirely convinced she can pull this color off, but this is her first major appearance since her fiance died and we think the boldly declarative color makes a strong choice for her. We’d quibble with some of the design elements, especially the shape of the shoulders and cap sleeves, but even that misses the point. It was all about showing up bright and smart and fresh. That was clearly the goal and – shiny face aside – we think she nailed it. Whatever quibbles we have are negated by the overall effect, which is striking and lovely.

More gorgeous color – love it! Agree it might not be HER best color but I can’t say she looks bad in it. (I suspect the whole looks is helped tremendously by the bold blue backdrop that contrasts with the gold so well.)

  • Jessica Freeman

Yellow sheer panels should not be a thing.

    • FuhUgh

yes, this might have worked way better without the sheer

    • Shouldercat

Right?! I feel like they were going for a better design in the bodice and just got lazy. Looks like opaque boob drapes with backing sheers.

    • scoobysnacks

Normally I hate me some sheer, but don’t turn on me for saying I don’t mind this. Whatever makes Michelle happy right now, I’m fine with, but in general, let’s not see repeats of yellow sheer, yes.

  • The underpinnings are failing her, as is the lack of face powder.

  • stacey

On my monitor, I would say this is NO ONE’s color. and it is just a fugly dress. I do wish her well, what an awful thing to go through.

    • Nancy Arseneault-Heald

I bet Lupita could make this color sing.

  • Lily

Love the color. Had no idea about the fiance. How terrible.

    • poorellensmith

I didn’t know, either, and it definitely makes me more likely to forgive any fashion mistakes she may be making right now.

  • SewingSiren

It is an unusual choice of color for her. But I think it looks quite striking. Like Snow White.

  • Anna

I like it in the last shot, but not really when viewed from the front. It’s a tough colour to pull off (you can’t help but compare it to Michelle Williams’s gown from the 2006 Oscars) and the lack of support is doing the whole look a disservice.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

The side view of thus look works, but from the front the bodice looks saggy-perhaps the gown needed a bit more built in support?
How awful for Dockery to suffer that loss. My heart goes out to her

    • From the side, she looks like an absolute dream.

  • schadenfreudelicious

My kingdom for some blotting papers….

  • Michele

I love the color, but I agree that it might not be the best one for her. Maybe the lipstick clashes with it? Or not. I’m not sure.

    • kimmeister

Those two colors together always read “McDonald’s” to me.

      • Michele

Lol! No WONDER I craved fast food for dinner! : )

  • Karen

I think I’d like it more if we got rid of the sheer part near the shoulders. But overall, it’s a nice effect. And I do really love her hair here.

  • Mathilde

I’m actually surprised by how much I love this dress. Not really a fan of the sheer panels, but the color is just a refreshing glass of orange juice and she looks so happy.

  • Gail

I saw some photos of her taken with Tom Hiddleston and her bust looked saggy in those shots. Almost like her boobs in this dress reached her waist. Nevertheless, the color is the least of her trouble.

    • mellorcr

Even when the model wears this, it looks like her boobs are down at her waist, so its probably more related to the pleats sagging than her actual boobs, but still, nobody saw that and spoke up?

      • scoobysnacks

She frequently has boob sag support issues. I suspect even if it weren’t the dress’s fault, we might’ve been saying this.

    • scoobysnacks

There’s no way around the saggy vibe, I don’t think. No matter who wears it, e.g. Michelle, the model, whoever. Normally I’m grouchy about it, but I find myself rather fine with the situation since my brain kinda registers that it’s impossible for her entire top to be quite that droopy. Re:Tom pics, it’s a wonder the internet didn’t just shut down and if it was a picture with Tilda or Lupita with him, it might’ve done. I hope they’re not just friends (although I’m assuming so because they’re likely nice Brits taking a photo and she lost her fiance a few months ago) because I need to ship that Pretty Train hard. Maybe she could lean on him emotionally or something. Help me out here, Michelle.

  • TamiSeattle

Picture #1 she looks like a young Caitlyn Jenner

  • MilaXX

I think she is making this color work. Shiny face and weird sleeves are minor quibbles for me. The overall effect is pretty.

  • semigeekgirl

The lip color seems too harsh and her face is really shiny, but hopefully she looked better outside of flashbulb-city.

  • Lilithcat

Hurry, or you’ll miss the bus and be late for school.

  • GemFemme

Despite some fit issues with the bodice, I’m gonna say this is a success simply because of the color and that she looks happy in it.

  • 3boysful

Curious–why so many Brits at this dinner?

  • B_C_J

I don’t like the fit in the bust but bless her for finding the strength to get out once again after such a tragedy.

  • Monabel

That color requires brown or black skin.

  • GillianHolroyd

I’ll be the one quibbling about her hair. It looks healthy, great color, and all but I think she’d be better suited to a style less fussy.

  • Bold choice for a pale girl, but I love that she went with this. I like the orange nails with it.

  • marlie

I think she looks lovely. I think she’s pulling the color off, and the dress suits her. I agree with the quibbles about the shoulders/sleeves (and I would add neckline), but overall she looks really pretty and spring-y.

  • ashtangajunkie

I don’t love the colour or sheer panels, but I do love the lipstick and mani colour that she paired with it.

  • Suzanne JPaul

It is definitely the gown version of “I’m not defeated by my grief but neither am I quite myself at the moment.”

  • Katherine Rizzoli

I love everything about this, but the bust could be a bit more fitted.

  • Constant Reader

Oh, Michelle, you fell for it when someone at Cushnie et Ochs said “You have dark hair! Yellow will look great on you and bring out your highlights!” I’ve been there. It always ends with you (or me) looking pale and washed out. And the dress… well, I suspect your beauty and poise are bringing it up several notches, so kudos for that.

  • BobStPaul

That is an utterly wretched color and very unflattering on her. It’s also kind an ugly dress.

  • Kaonashi

This looks very pretty on Michelle but I’m not sure if that’s her color.

  • Beto

Beautiful, declarative and bright color. I don’t like how the front top is constructed though, poor fitting. But in overall she pulls it off.

  • boingboing

I think the gown itself is lovely, but I struggle to think who could possibly pull off that weird color.

  • Imasewsure

Sorry but I think this is awful (on her and in general). Do like the color though

  • evave2

    Lovely color and fit.

  • FionaTF

The color is awful on her – she looks pale pink – like a newborn piglet. This color would only work w/ someone w/ yellow undertones in their skin and medium or darker skin color.

  • Robert Sanchez

The drape-y puckering on the sheer panels looks bad.

  • mkconly

My favorite color and shape. And her lip is fantastic.

  • LaSylphide

Love the color, although I think it’s too intense for her porcelain coloring. Hate the top: unflattering and just weird looking.

  • SuzyQuzey

Terrible dress, especially the flesh mesh.

  • A_guy01

I like this. She could use a little more breast support, but apart from that I think she looks charming.

  • Little_Olive

Oh I personally think the color is striking. As usual, yellow is all about shades, and this particular one is perfect for her. Nice styling too.

My quibbles would have gone more in the unsupported girls’ direction, but I’ll let it pass.

  • quiltrx

She’s pretty, but sorry, the dress looks like orange sections pulled apart, with webbing in between.

  • Radish

I actually really like it. Even the contrasting mani and lips work for me.

  • greenwich_matron

There is nothing wrong with her breasts. The dress is badly designed – plain and simple (unless they were making an ironic statement with a “comical sagging boobs” costuming technique)

  • cocohall

My immediate reaction was “She is willing herself through this exuberant color to smile, to live, to engage with the world.” Is it perfect? No, but is she being so very British (and some would say so very Mary) and just getting on with it? Yes. Good for her. That her personal life could echo Mary’s life so closely is something not even Fellowes could dream up. Chin up and carry on. That’s the best you can do and a bright bold frock is sometimes what is needed.

  • E. D.

    The girls need some support.

  • mickiemonkey

Yellow is the color of hope as Michelle O. has shown us. Good for Ms. Dockery. She is lovely and brave here.

  • Talia

Harsh and shiny. Nope nope nope.
