Say what you will about the lady’s public appearance style – God knows we have – but she’s a pro and she knows what works for her. We don’t mean “works for her” in a style sense (as in which colors and cuts flatter or compliment her), we mean “does the work she expects.” She dresses to get the job done and this week in Cannes, she offered up two prime examples of her basic go-to styles. Menswear and a dress to remind you of Pretty Woman.

Are we wrong? Are these not her two main looks?

This is hilariously awful, we have to say. She knows who she is and she’s one of the biggest movie stars in the world, so while we can smirk over the fact that she’s wearing an ass-flattening pin-striped jumpsuit, she can go and smirk at her bags of money and awards recognition.

Point: Julia.

It’s Pretty Woman Goes to a Funeral. We joke because we love we’re awful bitches. In point of fact, she looks absolutely gorgeous here. All joking aside, we think she really did learn with Pretty Woman how well she can wear a gown cut almost exactly like this. It works on both levels; as a marketing tool to remind you she’s screen legend Julia Roberts and as a style choice because she crushes this look effortlessly every time.

Point: Julia again.

i need a double shot. of espresso. zzzzzzzzzz

  • mimi

the waist on that jumpsuit just hits her in such an unflattering place. sheesh.

    • sgac37

At first I thought she just needed to put a belt through those belt loops, but you’re right, the level of the waist is all wrong.

  • People love to hate her, I am not among those people. The first look has had me laughing since yesterday. Coveralls at Cannes, for God’s sake. Amazing. The second is the Glamour I’ve been looking for. Perfect fit, perfect styling. I’ll gladly take that big ass emerald, thank you very much.

    • Sam Smith

I like the idea of the first look, but wished it were not a jumpsuit but just a vest and shirt paired with some skinny black pants. She is fabulous in the second look.

    • Buellie413

Me too, I’ve enjoyed too many of her movies to ever fully join the dislike train. The second dress isn’t anything game changing, but she looks ridiculously beautiful in it.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Julie isn’t on my irrational hate list; it was more fatigue with the fact that she was once Everywhere.
That said, I am liking the second look, and the woman knows when to flash that million dollar smile

    • Donna Tabor

Is she barefoot in this shot? I read that she went barefoot in protest of last year’s hoopla over high heels.

      • housefulofboys

I don’t know if she is barefoot in these shots, but I saw pics of her going up the stairs and giggling with George with her shoes in her hand. Good for her!

      • Jo

yes she was, she looked like she had loads of fun!

    • marlie

I like the idea of the jumpsuit, but I wish this one had a more tailored fit. The second look is gorgeous. And I can’t help it – she’s on my Irrational Love Lost.

  • laura

I’m just here for that necklace.

    • 3boysful

I want Chopard to adopt me.

      • i’ll even be the wicked stepsister if they want both of us!

    • Linda LaPaz

My birthday is in May. She should hand that emerald over to me immediately.

  • Timber

My favorite accessory is her crow’s feet. God bless a star of this magnitude who lives in her face.

    • Suzanne JPaul

I also like her teeth-colored teeth.

      • macaroni

And actually her teeth and not veneers! Granted, Jules was blessed with a great smile, but having worked in a cosmetic dentist’s office, it seems like everyone has fake teeth now.

  • Bland Gland

Here for that hair toss, the honking big necklace, and nothing else.

  • clatie

that pinstriped onesie thing is ATROCIOUS. I must assume that she thought it up herself and no one was brave enough to tell her it was hideous.

  • steph

The pinstripe jumpsuit fuckery is awful but she is Julia.
    The 2nd look is Gold, Cha-Ching, Cha-Ching.

  • OrangeChia

She’s like a sneeze away from being matronly in that black gown.

    • Gatita

I also think it’s matronly. What pulls it out of the abyss is her hair and the necklace.

    • random_poster

I thought matronly, too, and I’m not really sure why.

      • OrangeChia

For me, it’s how high the bodice goes on each side. Boob horns.

  • Anna

DYING at the pinstripe coveralls. She’s a high powered executive of a…construction site?

“Pretty Woman Goes to a Funeral” says it all for the 2nd look.

    • Cynica

I was thinking “prison jumpsuit for a white-collar Club Fed prison.
My irrational hate for her keeps from liking anything but that necklace.

      • And I was thinking Christmas party at the auto shop, so…see? Versatile!

  • Sarah

Girl is one set of sleeves away from giving me an oil change. No bueno.

  • Karen B

You know it’s bad menswear when you can imagine Diane Keaton saying “ummmm….. no”

But, damn, I love her hair when it’s down and “effortless” like that.

    • I’ve been coveting her hair since 1988.

      • Karen B

I spent many years as a faux redhead under her tutelage.

      • Eliza Jardine

I have her hair, and I’d happily trade it off to anyone who wants it. Effortless it is not.

  • Jessica Freeman

Finally, Julia looks like a fucking movie star in the second look. Please note, she was not wearing shoes in that second look. Well done.
(Burn that jumpsuit and never speak of it again.)

  • ashtangajunkie

I’d forgive her dressing like she’s on her way to her shift at a fancy car garage if she brought back the red curls.

  • Aunt Kiki

That first look is one tiny step away from pinstripe overalls.

  • Diane

number two is undeniably good. maybe not adventurous or exciting, but very good. I don’t know what number one was except bad.

  • Shawn EH

Meh and blah. She can occasionally be striking, and I always enjoy her hilarious misses. These are as safe as can be.

  • The first look is lacking something to work… The second look, yet boring, is great for her. She looks stunning!

  • Jessica Peterson

I would lurrrrrrv that pinstriped look if it were two pieces and tailored a little more properly. Also, she makes me want to try on that dress to see if I look like her in it.

  • Tom’s friend

And not a word about her being barefoot in look #2? Scandalizing the French! It was page one news, above the fold here in Paris.

    • Imasewsure

I’m pretending she threw her shoes at her personal assistant seconds before going on to crush the red carpet diva style (or her feet hurt, she looked at her bank book, and walked out barefoot)….

  • fromanotherplanet

Julia LITERALLY HAS NO F UCKS TO GIVE and I am HERE FOR IT. I am here for former it girls getting to that place in their careers wheRE they can say EFF it. I am going to be comfortable and you will seethe and deal. WERK JULIA!!! Older and established male celebs show up to Cannes in lazy outfits all the time and no one ever bats an eyelash. I am here for this. HERE FOR IT!!!~!

  • Little_Olive

I like that there is hair going on in the second look, bou I would have liked better it up or half up.

The jumpsuit is indeed hillariously bad. If there is anything I’ve learned here at TLo -much to my astonishment- is that jumpsuits, while tricky, don’t need to be unflattering.

  • DyanSwan

For me, no points to Julia for these sorry RC efforts.

  • Shouldercat

If she really does need to remind us she’s a movie star, that’s not a good thing. Pinstripe onesie makes her pear-shaped and the black Armani (that looks an awful lot like Jessica Chastain’s yellow Armani from the other day), has no personality whatsoever.

  • KittieLynnNYC

Add sleeves to the jumpsuit, and you’ll have a mechanic’s uniform. End of story.
The second look is lovely, but I have to say-she keeps going back to that hair color lately, and I’m not feeling on her at all.

  • largishbearishAtlish

The 2nd picture in the black dress is perfection, hair swinging, movie star making oodles of money PERFECTION.

  • ms_kat

So the pinstripe jumpsuit is a travesty, but can we talk about those shoes? I LOVE the white before the sole (or is it creme). I cannot explain why, but the shoes are making me happy.

  • Ssquared1105

And the necklace is the perfect touch for the gown. It compliments the neckline and the emerald provides a beautiful pop of color.

  • majorbedhead

Givenchy overalls. I need to go lie down now.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I wish she would stop coloring her hair blonde.

  • I know these are labels, but I can’t help but sing “JC Penney – doin’ it right!” when looking at the pinstripe.

  • Lisalemann

I honestly don’t care for her generally and that first outfit is awful – but the shots of her wearing that dress on the red carpet – barefoot – those almost made me like her again – which I haven’t since her Pretty Woman/Mystic Pizza days. It is the biggest middle finger to Cannes’ “flat-gate” fiasco last year – I loved her for that!

  • Linda LaPaz

I’d love the first look if it were actuallly a vest and ladypants.

  • Rhonda Shore

    And that necklace is fabulous!

  • queeniethebold

Fully on the bizarre irrational dislike of her. Except it’s not irrational (for me), because i don’t think she’s that gifted an actress. Woefully overrated. But, you know. Many people disagree. There you go.

    Her hair is a dried-up, thatched-hut-roof disaster.

i don’t think she looks that great at all in the second look, and the first look is truly awful.

The necklace is pretty amazing, though.

    • MilaXX

Come sit next to me. She’s on my IHL and I think she looks awful in both these shots, not to mention I HATE the movie Pretty Woman and anything that calls back to it.

      • alyce1213

Oh yes, I agree — IHL. And Pretty Woman is an evil movie, promoting and perpetuating a cruel myth about prostitution .

    • pasdebourree

      I so agree on “dried-up, thatched-hut-roof disaster.”

  • Myra Amler

That first look screams “Miss, oh miss, I’d like to order a cocktail.”

  • The Moops

I totally scrolled down that first look thinking it was going to culminate in shorts. Girlfriend likes to show off her legs, as we know. *wipes brow*

Hair in the 2nd look is pretty great, IMO.

  • possibilityexists

i love her necklace with the black dress

  • berkeleygirl

Even when her outfits are awful (which, admit it, is most of the time), I have to hand it to her: She looks better than ever, yet doesn’t look like she’s working at it. Specifically, she’s not rail-thin. I actually believe that, when not making a movie, she’s spending more time with her kids than worrying about looking good enough to get hired again.

  • MilaXX

    Blech, I don’t like either.

  • Kaonashi

I prefer the second look. even if the emerald doesn’t quite go with it. And a comb would help things considerably.

  • teacherlady

The lady is aging gracefully; picture in the attic, maybe? What a smile!

  • oh vienna

Who knew that 5th Avenue Mechanic was a thing?

  • macaroni

    DAT. EMERALD. *grabby hands*

  • homespunner

I see Paris, I see France..

  • evave2

That first look is awful. I won’t body shame. It is the JUMPSUIT that makes her look pear-shaped.

  • alyce1213

The idea behind the jumpsuit isn’t bad . . . oh fuck it, I can’t stand her. Not worth the effort to comment.

  • cocohall

The first look would be so much better if it were actual vest and pants. Plus easier to hit the loo. Is it some special anniversary of Pretty Woman? 20? That second look has “memory lane” written all over it. I don’t mind her – she does a certain thing very well. She may believe she is a better actress that she really is (August Osage County, anyone?) but she really can bring the movie star smile when she wants and she is working it in that dress.

  • lizajane1776

    Gawd, I hate dropped waists.

  • Poeta Paz

Julia and her million dollar smile!

I just so badly need to fix the shirt, pull the pants up, find a belt. And girl, that’s not your hair color, you look so much better as a brunette.

  • roxlet

You nailed the Pretty Woman goes to a funeral look. And the jump suit is truly hiddy.

  • Monabel

    Her yellow dress is black.

  • The Detonator

I just want to kick her. I don’t know why. She’s done nothing to me personally. Well, not counting Runaway Bride, but that might just be my problem.

  • I can never get past how terrified she looks in front of the cameras, all the time. I DON’T PITY YOU JULIA ROBERTS YOU’RE A BAJILLIONAIRE STOP MAKING ME FEEL A LITTLE BAD FOR YOU YOUR CLOTHES COST MORE THAN MY RENT AND MY PAYCHECK COMBINED I BET JUST GET IT TOGETHER

  • Tee

I can’t get over that she’s barefoot underneath that dress. She has to use the restroom at some point.

  • FridaStaire

She looks insane. not just the clothes.

  • guyfromhoboken

That jumpsuit is 50 shades of WTF? It is the most shapeless and unflattering outfit. The second dress is very pretty but she looks a little uncomfortable and stiff in it…like she rather be wearing a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. She does look beautiful though. I would like to see her go back to her signature red hair though. This blond is bordering on Emma Roberts territory.

  • Mothra

Second look is boozy divorced mother of the groom.

  • Truthiness2U

I like the second look except for that fried, blonde hair. The auburn is most flattering on her, she should go back to that. I love that she had bare feet under the gown, given Cannes’ dickish move of requiring heels last year. That deserves a hearty FU.

The first outfit? I’m trying to ignore it, it’s just so stupidly bad. Like the top part was fine, but then it was scrolldown WTF? to see it was a drop-waisted jumpsuit. As the kids say, who was even asking for this?

  • Tarquin

Both looks seem very dated, just like Pretty Woman.

  • You know you’re in a terrible jumpsuit when that back-view is the best-view of the jumpsuit.

  • Pammer

She does all the right things, has all the right movements. Muscle memory and all from her over exposed era. But she looks a bit terrified in a couple of shots. I read she had never been to Cannes. She sure has forgotten to hide her fear.

  • quiltrx

She does look great in that gown–and I LOVE the gown for actually having STRUCTURE instead of going the lazy way of illusion to get that neckline effect.

  • Housewives fan7404

Minus six points for that hair. 1) Julia Roberts is not a blonde. 2) Nothing short of motor oil could give that straw some life.

  • ovarB

That first outfit is worthy of a “no more wire hanger” beat down. NO MORE PINSTRIPE ROMPERS!!!!

  • gefeylich

Hah, I just realized that now she’d play the Sally Field role in Steel Magnolias. With Brie Larson or Jennifer Lawrence as her doomed daughter. I’d pay samolians to see that.

No one really likes her, but she looks good in the gown. The pinstriped jumpsuit, however, is heinous.

  • JynxTheCat

I hoped against hope that when I saw the first shot that the pinstripe jawn would turn out to be a column gown. Which would have been SO hilariously her. And probably fantastic.
