Cannes 2016: Jessica Chastain in Armani Privé

Posted on May 12, 2016

Jessica Chastain attends the premiere of “Cafe Society” and the Opening Night Gala held at the Cannes Palais des Festivals during the 2016 Cannes International Film Festival in Cannes, France.

The trend (if we can jump ahead a bit) for the Cannes 2016 red carpet would appear to be a bold, bright yellow. And darlings? After a spring and winter loaded with funeral dresses on the red carpet, we can’t do anything but applaud this development.

That hem pains us. Did she take a walk on the beach before hitting the red carpet? We spent several minutes debating whether it was part of the design or not. Feel free to do the same. Either way, it’s a shame, because the rest of the gown is pretty much flawless. There’s nothing here we haven’t seen before, but sometimes it can be refreshing just to go with a classic red carpet look and nail it. There’s no question who and what she is. This is pretty much the definitive “movie star” look.

Not so much on the hair, though — right?

Getting serious “Renee Zellweger 2001 Oscars” vibes (which is a good thing, that Jean Dessès remains one of my favorite Oscar looks to date).

The fit of the dress is perfect and she looks gorgeous in the color. Love the necklace.

    • Anna

I got Renee’s Jean Desses too (also one of my favourites), until I got to the hem.

      • makeityourself

There is a person standing behind Jessica who is holding an umbrella. My guess is it rained earlier and the carpet was soaked, so the rain just absorbed into her gown. Now I’m going to look at the hem of every dress on the red carpet today to check out my theory.

        • littlemac8

I think I saw another wet hem. I think you’re on to something!

    • Karen B

I was trying to remember if it was Reese’s or Renee’s Oscar dress.

  • clatie

It’s pretty and fits well, etc. I guess I just don’t like that sort of molded chest-piece construction, where it looks like the dress could take the walk down the red carpet without you.

    • Jackie4g

That’s the only way you can construct, or in this case, structure the pleated chiffon, to get it to stay.

      • clatie

I know. I just don’t love the stiffness. As I said below, she herself looks gorgeous.

    • gotgreyhound

I’m so happy to see unashamed HIPS on the red carpet, though! I think she looks fantastic.

      • clatie

No, she does look splendid! It’s the stiffness of the dress I don’t love.

    • OffToSeeHim

It really has to fit the breasts perfectly to look good. Which, in this case, fail.

    • livesarah

It looks like it was fitted on a model with a torso just slightly longer than Jessica’s. If it was the exact right length I don’t think it would be so noticeable.

  • Flashing back to the Pretty Woman’s Opera night dress. Nothing about this feels fresh. Even the delicate yellow is being too heavily contrasted by the obvious construction. The necklace is not enough and the hair is too casual.

    • your face

Hmm. I don’t think these look alike at all.

      • No, I checked after, it was more of a mental suggestion. And the overall, someone bought her this dress, put her in it, handed over that big ass necklace, knowing it was going back at the end of the day. The whole scene, not just the literal dress. But thanks.

    • Pet Peeve

I fully agree. I see the similarities.

  • charlotte

The cups don’t really fit and the hair needs to be glammed up, but the color looks gorgeous on her.

    • steph

Now that you pointed it out, that’s all I can see is the ill fitting bodice.

      • JLou

All I see is the wonky seams in the skirt. That seems to be a bit of a theme this week – lovely couture gowns with wrinkly seams.

  • Janet B

I like the side part, but I think her hair should have been up or at least sleeker.

  • Emily Smith

At least a partial updo would have pleased me here on the hair front.

  • steph

Jessica, here’s a flat iron, let’s show you the magic it can do.

  • KateShouldBeWorking

The hair is too Date Night at a Pool Hall: cute but wrong for the venue.

  • GregoireNYC

Can I give a shout-out to the hairstylist here? That chopped, slightly disheveled look looks beautiful on her. I could even see it going a bit shorter

    • lexilexi

Yes – and hooray for a side part.

    • Carly Clement

I know! i want that hair cut now!

    • Sam Smith

I like her look from the necklace up, the dress isn’t doing it for me.

  • Madgirl

I want a movie where her and Christina Hendricks play sisters. And I want it to be a dark comedy. Someone make that happen please. Besides the hem she looks grrrreat

  • Jessica Freeman

I can’t with the puckering side seams. The execution of the dress and the look fell very short.

    • charlotte

As if it were a mall knockoff. What is the equvialent of Versayce? Armayni?

      • Wink

        Armanee? Armoney?

      • EveEve

        OurMoney.

  • I love this. Even with the faults, this is the kind of garment that put her apart from the rest of the pack.

  • Bland Gland

The hair is too casual for the rest of the look, and for the life of me I don’t understand why someone with hair this gorgeous would ever follow the steps of Jennifer “constant bad hair day” Lawrence.

  • H3ff

She looks like one of those fridge magnet dolls that you style by putting magnet clothes on, so ill-fitting is that bodice. It is an inch away from her chest.

  • mjude

a quick walk on the beach. but she does look pretty

  • Laura

I believe the hem looks like that because the red carpet was wet. In the pictures from that premiere, you can see wet hems on a few of the dresses.

    • deb

We had massive storms here just before the premiere’s. Wacky weather!

  • In_Stitches

Reminds me of her Globes dress with that tiny waist and all the ruching. Both suit her to a T. Perfect lip choice as well. A lot of people would have gone with red.

  • BerriG

The only thing I can see is that necklace which I covet in the most desperate way!

  • E. D.

    I’m OK with the hair.

  • I think the dress has several layers of fabric and the last one is very see-through and therefore it appears as if it were. She looks fantastic!

  • N

She is gorgeous, and the gown highlights her figure really well, and the colour is nice, but this is such a standard strapless look that has been done many times, it fails to excite, and the hair could’ve been better.

  • penguinmom

Love the gown and the necklace, but not together. Maybe this is nitpicking but the whiteness/silveryness of the necklace doesn’t “go” with the yellow of the dress. How striking would it have been to swap that out with a big honking necklace featuring emeralds or sapphires?

  • KateM

I love Cannes red carpet. She looks beautiful, but agree on the hair.

  • ashtangajunkie

A little chignon and a bit more lippy would have elevated this quite a bit. Love the yellow on her.

  • ANWrootbeers

I am thinking maybe it was raining not so long before these shots were taken? (See the umbrella hanging on the wall in the last shot, as well as the small puddles at the edges of the red carpet…) That might explain the hem. And, actually, the hair, too.

Think she looks pretty movie-star fabulous, too!

    • nycfan

Pretty much had the exact same thoughts …

    • cocohall

Can you imagine getting all dolled up in a special gown, hair and makeup, and then having to pretend that it isn’t upsetting to drag your dress through puddles while hundreds of people take your photo? It’s amazing that she is able to look as relaxed and happy as she does.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I admire her for that. I would be in tears.

        • cocohall

Right? Even if she hasn’t paid for the dress, she has gone to hours and hours of effort to be there and be photographed and then she has soggy hems. I would be crying or looking for a bar. Or both.

  • Buellie413

The seams on the side are sloppy, but I love this. Her hair is adorable, but a bit too casual for Cannes. Though it may just be windy.

  • Sanglots longs

I like the dress, don’t love the color on her (Kiki worked the yellow better today, IMO). The bust structure is pretty astounding, and I can accept the fit issues there. With a cup as structured as that, the fit has to be almost too small, or there’s always space at the upper edge, even with a perky, rounded bust (I think fake boobs might work better with this type of bodice). From the front, that neckline looks spectacular, and I’m just delighted that there’s no need to hike anything up.

  • Luca

the palm-shaped necklace at Cannes… I see what you did there, Jessica!

  • Tarquin

The bodice seems very stiff and overworked

  • Jackie4g

Deeply influenced by Madame Gres. I’d go so far as to say this was robbed from Alix Gres. Gorgeous dress, but not an original design. Still, the style is classic and the fit is flattering, so give credit for couture dressmaking skills.

  • Hoffenreffer

    Boring. Good face styling though.

  • MilaXX

Love the look & dress but that hem looks like dirt/mud.

  • Ssquared1105

I love this dress because she looks gorgeous in it, and because the dress represents some amazing garment construction technique. The atelier at Armani is so talented.

As far as the hair goes, she probably wanted to go more modern because if she’d put it up or done the Veronica Lake waves thing again it would have been a too literal throwback with the necklace and dress.

    • Suzanne JPaul

I liked all this too. The side seam puckering bugs but, minor quibble.

      • Ssquared1105

I actually didn’t notice it at first. The bodice is such a feat of engineering that it made me blind to everything else.

  • Linda LaPaz

Hair’s too casual for that dress. But that NECKLACE!!!!!

  • What a beautiful fit on the gown, and I think the necklace is just right: very showy but in a regal, classy way. Agree about the hair being the least attractive part of this look.

  • DyanSwan

I don’t think that shade of yellow works for her.

  • It’s also refreshing to see a strapless dress that looks like it’s been properly fitted – aka not going to fall down at any moment! And I LOVE that necklace.

  • Kent Roby

    Jessica Rabbit-Chastain.

  • Sophie’s Choice

She looks great in the dress but it reminds me of her first Cannes appearance back in 2011 for The Tree of Life. At least this dress doesn’t have the Zac Posen seam going down the dress, thank god.

  • DuBey2

I can’t get past the dirty hem look. Planned or not, It beats all other quibbles by a lap.

  • rumsey

What a necklace! And how spectacular it would look with hair that was styled in some way other than this uncombed casual look, which seems to be the style du jure.

  • Lilithcat

I’m always bemused by stars who get all glammed up with a fabulous gown, diamonds out the wazoo, and yet have hair that looks like they just came from the gym. It’s weird.

I do love this dress, although I could do without the trailing scarf-like bit. The construction of that bodice is a wonder to behold. Can’t figure out if she walked through a puddle or if that hem was intentional.

  • Shug

The gown, and Jessica, are fabulous. Although I have to say I don’t love yellow on a redhead. As with basically everything ever, that color would look stunning on Lupita.

  • lilibetp

Apparently it rained and the red carpet was wet.

  • OffToSeeHim

I think the bottom is actually a semi-transparent overlay that’s showing some red from the carpet through it. Unfortunate.

  • Lower L

She looks great, and I love the necklace.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Even with the hair and the hem this is still a WERQ. And that necklace is beautiful.

  • VCR1

She looks beautiful but I do agree this is basically her default look on the red carpet. Can’t say it doesn’t work for her though! She looks great in yellow!

  • Terry Weyna

I wish combing one’s hair would come back into style.

  • IAmJ

This custard yellow looks gorgeous on her.

  • lahallita

When I first saw this, I thought she looked striking, and wished that she’d attempted a french twist, or a more intentional-styled-looking hairstyle.

    • Swiftlytiltingplanet

I would’ve been happy if she’d just run a comb through it before the red carpet.

  • GoddessOfThunder

Hair and hem no but but that face is FLAWLESS!

  • largishbearishAtlish

would it kill her to use some conditioner?

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Aside from the hem, I am loving this nod to classic RC glamour, and the yellow is so refreshing. This look calls for a more polished hair, though

  • Yeah, the hair is a miss. But the dress is gorgeous and flattering and perfect.

  • tryinnottobetoojudgy

The dress looks absolutely perfect and divine in the third shot. In every other picture, something is puckering, gaping, or pulling. But in that one shot, she looks like a zillion bucks. Beautiful color on her, much to my surprise.

  • OldTownGail

I think the hem looks dirty because the top layer of the dress is fairly sheer – it looks brighter/cleaner where the yellow lining is showing through, but darker/duller/dirtier where the red carpet is showing through.

In less, of course, the problem with the hem is in its finishing, rather than in its coloring, in which case I got nothin’.

  • Kaonashi

Love the color and shape, especially in the bust area. That necklace sets off the whole look nicely. Something different could have been done with the hair though.

  • VoicOff

She looks like the J’adore’s perfume bottle from the front.

It’s not as effective when you see the sides seams and the mudy hem

  • Notasaltine

I think that the dirty looking hem color is the unfortunate result of the lining ending just before the bottom of the chiffon overlay, and the way that the red carpet looks filtered through said chiffon.

  • SorayaS

I wonder if she’s going for “French” head so I’ll give her a pass on the hair looking a little undone.

But no excusing such an ill-fitting bodice. Well, just the cups really, as it’s gorgeously fitted around the waist- love the shape and pleating but it looks about a size too big for her up top which is ridiculous considering it was made for her right?!

  • KT

That shade of yellow is not her friend, but damn if she doesn’t look absolutely gorgeous. This kind of reminds me of the dishy bronze Versace dress she wore to the Golden Globes last year. Love when she pulls out the old Hollywood glamour — suits her perfectly.

  • jilly_d

Serving up hourglass realness. She looks bangin’.

  • quiltrx

    THAT NECKLACE THO.

  • oneWEIRDword

    Wow! And necklaces are back!

  • Lauren

Maybe she, her hem, and her hair went for a walk on the beach?

  • HeatherB

I am a ginger and I DO NOT wear yellow, so I cannot abide the color- but the fit and style are gorg. The hem looks like she fell into the water a little bit getting out of the boat and they caught her just in time.
