Kittens, for this week’s little chatfest, we took the usual tack of simply yakking about what’s on our minds this week, so you get a little more commentary on the Outlander costumes and how they differ from the costuming of a show like Downton Abbey. You get a little bit of Orphan Black (review forthcoming) commentary, a little bit of Daredevil (review also forthcoming) commentary and a whole bunch of thoughts on Cathy Cambridge’s recent tour of South Asia and her style choices for the trip.

And of course, plenty of discussion of the “Wizard of Oz” episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race (visual aids to follow).

The whole RPDR episode seemed to be based on avoiding to mention the obvious: Why there were little ladies and “based on the BOOK”. I have however read about the ladies’ feedback afterwards and some other feedback from that community and it seemed generally very positive. In other news, Thorgy needs to win a challenge soon.

Also: You will be talking about GoT once it airs, right? I would love to hear what you think!

    • FluffyHeretic

The challenge had to be based on the book because there was no way World of Wonder could afford a direct Wizard of Oz movie tie-in.

Furthermore, the inclusion of the cast of Little Women of L.A. was very tastefully done, there was actual discussion in the episode about what terminology the ladies prefer to use, and they had their own storylines and interactions. They were the best non-drag-queen makeover guests in quite some time.

      • Eric Stott

Possibly these little ladies deserve a Project Runway challenge – same network after all.

  • julnyes

I think it helped that these ladies are on reality tv already – they knew how to work the camera and provoke DRAMA!

Bob TDQ – If this is the most he stumbles, I would be fine with it. He is still my choice to win even in his Rainbow Realness Couture.
Thorgy – Again I didn’t see the problems that the judges saw – I thought Thorgy looked cool and its always fun seeing him walk the runway. Still my #2
Kim Chi – Cool look and make-up fantastic as usual.
Chi Chi – She needs to never mention her lack of resources in comparison to the other queens again. It is starting to sound like an excuse to not try harder. She is still my pick for #3
Robbie Turner – That was just terrible and I have no clue what the judges were going on about when talking about his great talents – his performance on the show never warranted that praise. Maybe they were referring to his audition tape. Deserved the bottom 2 spot
Derrick Britney – is officially the worst – that Untucked was ridiculous. His desperate bid to not be the absolute worst by trying to get Chi Chi to fall on the sword and place herself there was idiotic. He needs to learn how to take criticism and MOVE ON. Can’t wait until he leaves, but he deserved the Lipsnyc win.
Naomi Smalls – well deserved win for Naomi. That look was fantastic

    • Eric Stott

I suspect Robbie Turner is one of those queens who is just fine when she can take her time and plan things out, but who isn’t good under the pressures of reality TV. I like her better than Derrick, but she stumbled during the sync – and Derrick did the only think he can do well. (Derrick really pisses me off, but now I can see why he’s famous)

      • julnyes

Derrick’s lipsnyc was 100% Britney, but luckily that worked for the song.

      • annla

You are pretty spot on here. In Whatcha Packin’ Robbie talks about how he has never been not 100% in control of his own drag and it was hard to work with confinments.

      • PinkyAndNoBrain

Some queens just don’t do well on reality tv, and Robbie seems to be one of those. (Sorry I’m so late to the party, but grad school caused me to fall behind.)

  • Ramon Figueroa

Bob did his make up in basically 15 minutes. He should win just for that, but he has been wonderful throughout. I don’t find him obnoxious at all, especially in Snatch Game. As he said, he just seems happy to be there which, after a couple of weeks has to work on the nerves of everybody else. My only concern is that he could get the Ginger Minj narrative and not make it after excelling in the season. Love, love Kim Chi, but Naomi deserved it. It reminded me of Project Runway 3rd season, when the abominable Jeffrey made that plaid gown.

  • Dresbach appears to be pronounced “drezz-back” per Ronald Moore’s podcast when he introduced her.

  • MilaXX

I seem to be having a brainfart. I can’t get to the survey, can you post a link?

If it”s a reviewer I like I will read & comment on a binge watched show weeks after it has dropped. My only challenge is not spoiling others who watch at a slower pace so sometimes my comments are shorter because I’m self editing. A few a week would be a good compromise. 3 eps is enough to satisfy the binge watcher in me, but still allow time for thinking and discussing the show.
I think RuPaul’s premise was to cross promote their reality show. http://www.mylifetime.com/shows/little-women-la . Bob doesn’t bother me, but Derrick could seriously go kick rocks with open toed shoes. On the other hand after seeing Naomie Smalls & Kim Chi’s looks, Bob, Chi, Chi and Derick’s looks were major let downs. There’s a corner store in every neighborhood in Philly.
Sadly I agree about Cathy Cambridge’s look. I was mostly underwhelmed. I think if she was wearing actual local garments and perhaps even incorporating them into her look it would be fine. I wouldn’t consider it appropriation.

    • Eric Stott

“Derrick could seriously go kick rocks with open toed shoes”

GURRRRRL! I want some of that shade this summer!

  • In_Stitches

I wonder if I really hated ChiChi’s look on it’s own or if the shady ‘lazy’ edit she received pushed me in that direction. Either way, I was shocked to see Robbie lipsyncing in stead of her. Robbie’s look, tying in the concept of lions being the ‘kings’ of the jungle, had a bit of wit to it. It was a mess, but there was a concept. ChiChi’s concept was ‘blue tube dress with a detail’.

The New York queens kind of dropped the ball as well. They made clothes, not fashion. They were very well executed, but there was no real concept.

    • Eric Stott

ChiChi’s look is good at first glance, but sloppy the more you look. She and her little lady did sell it though.

    • julnyes

Chi Chi was going for “Disco Dorothy” so there was a concept. Was it executed perfectly? Absolutely not, but it wasn’t the worst of the bunch.

  • If Thorgy had made their outfit white I would have respected it more. Because that’s the point about citizens of Emerald City – all the green is an illusion.

  • I agree with the “munchkin” assessment. What I took away from Ru’s Vulture interview was that it was top loaded with basic questions about drag before getting to an incredible interview because there were questions about the person, not the culture. It was like, “here are the hoops, your reward for being interviewed as a person is at the end”.

The feeling of having to prove yourself over and over again based on what people first see is why this challenge was so brilliant. It was just assumed that everybody gets to be part of the fanfuckingtastica (Sirs T&Lo need to trademark that word) with NO conversation before hand. That’s where I feel drag is going and Captain Ru no longer has to give the safety demonstration before we can all proceed to the lido deck to have fun.

  • PBL5094

I studied abroad in India. Our male American professor would wear Indian garments and he encouraged us to get some. Some of the female students got Salwar Kameez and I got some lightweight pants and shirts. Eventually we got feedback that the Indian students were wondering what the hell we were doing, and after that I reverted back to khakis and button up shirts and lot of the women switched back.

I agree with you the whole thing Cathy Cambridge is doing is kind of tacky. The Michelle Obama approach is the right move.

    • Nancy Arseneault-Heald

But salwar look so comfie! I have longed to look so stylish and comfortable at the same time.

  • Eric Stott

Kim Chi is going to go because she’s clumsy – endearingly so, but it hurts her. Also I think her makeup skills might count against her – they are dazzling but more theatrical than drag, I’d like to see her do some beauty makeup, and a look that is more Drag and less Asian. I’m not firmly in the Michelle Visage camp that wants a queen to be versatile, but she should broaden the range a little. (Please don’t hate me, I love her dearly)

  • almondemy

I loved that Thorgy and her sister looked like Panem Capitol Citizens. It felt very Emerald Effie Trinket. I was there for that.

  • delw

It’s too bad that Catherine didn’t wear Indian designers. It is especially appalling considering that so many Indian designers are doing such a great work on all levels. A lot of them a masterfully combining Indian techniques with Western silhouettes. I call it a missed opportunity.

  • tessa

I thought the reading was good! Usually there are a couple of terrible people who can’t read at all, but I felt like that wasn’t there. Kim Chi’s read on chi chi was hilarious. And she did a lion look the first episode that could have been cowardly lion like. And with the interpretative dance- they were meant to be wicked! Kim Chi continues to improve to the point where I can definitely see her in the top three. I thought it was going to be chi chi but she’s not listening to the critiques and that makes me think they’re going to give up on her.

THANK YOU for pointing out the weird undertones of kate’s wardrobe. I’ve been following it on gofugyourself and I’ve been so confused by this quasi-indian/bhutan clothes by English designers

  • fananafanafophalec

I mean if Chanel Iman says you look just like her walking down the runway, you KNOW you have a career there

    • She really could do it too. I say if she doesn’t win this (She won’t) she should go be on the revived version of Top Model. Although she won’t get to benefit from Tyra’s presence.

      • fananafanafophalec

yeah or like get a contract with IMG or something

  • Carrie

Bye Robbie. I rather liked him as a boy, but his drag was just uninspired. He’s probably more interesting when he has more time to prepare, he’ll just never be the most dynamic queen.

    Ranking the rest:

    1. Bob – As much as his strutting is starting to get annoying, he is heads and tails still doing better than the rest. I don’t think the slip this week knocks him off the pedestal by any means, and this is his competition to lose.

    2. Thorgy – I’m totally over Thorgy’s whining about being the bridesmaid and never the bride. I personally didn’t care for the Michael impersonation at all; it’s just this year’s Snatch Game was so weak, that her impersonation was strong by comparison. I don’t think it’d have gotten praised in a season with stronger impersonations. Still, I like her and I’m putting her here because she’s the only other really versatile queen left in this competition.

    3. Kim Chi – The remaining 4 queens are all kind of one note, but damn, does she do her one note really, really well. And considering that her niche is the kind of interesting high fashion that the judges love, I think that’ll get her through to the end. None of the remaining four can really compare to her on that front.

    4. Chi Chi – I’m giving Chi Chi the edge over Naomi, only because of Chi Chi’s (former?) status as the judges favorite underdog. That being said, she’s falling out of favor fast, and she really needs to bring it next week. I hope she isn’t getting as run down by the competition as it appears, and next week will be telling if she can get it together or if she’s going to collapse entirely. Despite ranking her fourth, I could easily see her sashaying next week if she doesn’t crush it.

    5. Naomi – She knocked it out of the park and deserved the win, but one strong showing doesn’t a solid contender make. If the runway next week is more focused on what you brought with you, I think Naomi is going to be in trouble. The judges tend to be especially hard on the naturally pretty ones, because they really want to see them do something with it. I love T.Lo’s idea of her getting into modeling though. I think she’d be fantastic.

    6. Derek – Ugh. Is there such a thing as a half-dimension? Watching Derek makes you understand why female impersonators tend to get looked down on by the rest of the community. For everyone that is genuinely more well rounded and can do something other than their celeb of choice, there’s someone like Derek who brings the rest of them down. I just hope that the others like Derek aren’t so loathesome. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Derek outlast Chi Chi or Naomi because drama, but it’s also 100% clear that she’s only being kept for drama and has no chance at all of winning. I hope she goes soon.

    • Eric Stott

“Bye Robbie. I rather liked him as a boy, but his drag was just uninspired.”

You are so right – far more interesting out of Drag than in it. I could put up with those wig lines that everyone razzed him on, but having the same FACE every time was too much – only Divine could carry off those eyebrows.

    • My thing with Bob is that even though he’s absolutely showboating, he can back it up! It would be one thing if he was bragging on himself like Derrick while constantly in the bottom, but he wins! He turns it out, and like he told Ru, why bother to be humble when you know you slay?

  • Luca

I didn’t feel this maxichallenge and I have the feeling the queens didn’t either. There was widespread uninspiration all around. Also, many of the queens were lazy in doing for the Little Women a mini-replica of their own.
Anyhow, well-deserved victory for Naomi, with Kim Chi a close second. Thorgy was ok, the other four defintely bad.

I completely stand by those queens criticizing Chi Chi for her laziness. This lack of ambition is not worthy of the next drag superstar. You don’t want to overdone and stay basic with your dress? ok, but use the time to create, for example accessoires, or improve what you already did. The fact that Chi Chi did neither indicates lack of self-criticism and will to improve.
Compare Chi Chi to Adore of season 6. Also Adore started quite wobbly, but she learned from the other queens steadily and her improvement during the season was very visible. Chi Chi is just the same.

However, you cannot argue with the bottom 2 so it’s fine. Also fine the elimination in the sense that Robbie gave a horrible lipsynch.
Derrick was infuriating in Untucked, when she was pretending hers was a better job because she sowed and hemmed everything. Dear, you can hem every square centimeter of a dress, but if it’s ugly and badly done, it stays like that.

    • Eric Stott

“many of the queens were lazy in doing for the Little Women a mini-replica of their own”

That was pretty much to be expected- Ru always specifies “A Strong Family Resemblance”

      • Luca

A strong family resemblance doesn’t mean create two replicas of the same dress. Naomi for example did the right thing, creating two different but related dresses.

  • LaSleepy

I kept waiting for TLo to mention Milk from S6’s appearance in a recent Marc Jacobs campaign.
It seemed like a throwaway line, but I smiled when Lorenzo suggested that the interpretive dance song was promoting Ru’s latest single. The song first appeared on the show on S4 and was on the Glamazon album, three albums ago

  • knightweasel

I wonder if Ru designed the episode so that anyone who criticized it would have to make the link themselves between little people and The Wizard of Oz. Then Ru could be like Lorenzo and say, “What? I never thought that.” (Although I wouldn’t believe Ru and I do believe Lorenzo.)

  • “No, I’m not real. I’m actually everything and nothing at all.” Rupaul stated all my lifegoals in that Vulture interview. Also: “Because if you’ve gotten to the point where you need to go to court to figure out what to do, then you’ve lost your right to be cocky. You need someone. You need a mediator.” is exactly what I think as an attorney about litigating. LOVE HIM SO MUCH. Also Gay for Play is adorably camp.
