“I don’t get her,” said Lo to T.

“Why?” asked T of Lo.

“Because she does these editorials where she’s showering in sweaters and bikini bottoms or forgetting to wear pants, but then she walks out on a red carpet trying to be Nicole Kidman-as-Princess Grace,” said Lo in response to T.

“Did you want her to step out on the red carpet in her panties and dripping wet?” teased T.

“Shut up,” barked Lo. “I just think she needs to figure out her image.”

“The poor dear’s confused right now,” offered T. “She doesn’t seem to know if she wants to be a serious award-nominated actress or just make a lot of money in loud blockbusters.”

These are the conversations we have around here. Before we’ve even had our coffee.

Anyway, she looks pretty. As a look, it’s a little on the dull side, but the color goes a long way toward livening it up. It’s a solidly “Superman” blue, which makes it a nice companion to Gal Gadot’s “Wonder Woman” red gown. Would we like to see a little more style “oomph” from her? Absolutely. This is one event where she could have really let her rip on the whole glam thing. But as much as we’d like to see more sparkle and hairspray in this look, it’s pretty enough and gets the job done.

  • No complaints. It’s perfectly perfect – which I think *is* her style.

    • Carly Clement

I agree! I think it suits her perfectly and that colour is glorious on her

    • Donna Tabor

She’s a goddess, and she knows this look works for her.

  • Karen B

Points for the gold-cuff-style bracelet, very Wonder Woman-esque.
    The color pops.
    …that’s all I got.

    • Carly Clement

i didnt even notice the bracelets…. it is a nice touch!

    • Kent Roby

But major points deducted for pulling the slit open and showing her shoe after a photog’s request; she should be above acting like a trained circus animal.

      • kimmeister

And such an ugly shoe, at that!

  • Pato

    dress: superman
    shoes: batman
    cuff: wonder woman
    look: hers.

    i’d say attagirl.

    • *mental image of Baffleck in platform sandals*

  • I think she looks fabulous. Much better than usual! The sexier stuff never quite seems to represent her. A bolder lip would be nice though.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I agree, and I would have added a necklace to compliment the earrings-nothing too showy, but something, plus that bolder lip. There, we’ve fixed Amy!

  • I am sure she’s worn something similar to this previously. IMO, Ms. Adams defaults to “safe” because she is very committed to being taken seriously, no matter the film.

    • tryinnottobetoojudgy

She’s worn numerous gowns similar to this, I believe. This is firmly in her wheelhouse. This IS her wheelhouse. (What is a wheelhouse, anyway??) I’m all for celebuladies wearing what makes them feel best and most comfortable, but I’ll admit that when it comes to the red carpet, Amy bores me 99% of the time. It’s just so much of the same look with slight variations. But she’s an excellent actor and that matters most.

    • Kent Roby

I would agree, but her recent photo shoot was completely at odds with the “serious actress” persona.

      • I am sure that was a decision by committee, that photo shoot.

  • Sam Smith

I think it works well with the movie, blue, has a little capey vibe with the train. I would have gone with showier earrings or necklace and dropped the cuffs, which seem to blend into her skin tone.

  • ashtangajunkie

She looks flawless. Perfect fit, perfect ponytail. The colour is just gorgeous on her.

  • AndieJay

This color really brings out her eyes.

  • SugarSnap108

I love the color and the gold bracelet. But she could definitely use more sparkle, or at least a better lip color. I admire her superwoman ability to walk in those heels.

  • Lisalemann

I love her and the color is really pretty on her – but I am sick of ponytails on the red carpet. They don’t read “formal” to me no matter how perfect they are. They read “going to the store and don’t feel like brushing my hair”. This would have been better with full, flowing hair, in my opinion.

    • FlamingJune1967

Agree 100%! I don’t care how sleek the ponytail – it just never looks elegant to me. And her hair is so pretty! Would have really shone against the blue!

  • Anna

I think I would’ve given this a WERQ if it was a column gown with a cape but that may be stealing Wonder Woman’s thunder. As-is, she looks very good/very Amy Adams.

  • OrangeChia

This type of dress cries out for a more significant earring.

  • funkydonut

Needs a Necklace. A big damn glittery one.

    • luludexter

yes! all I could think was necklace, necklace, necklace…. or at least some bigger earrings

  • zellamaybe

The color is gorgeous on her, but am I the only one who feels like something about the shape is making her upper body look very broad? I know she’s not a big risk taker, but something less aggressively simple would be nice.

    • Sanglots longs

That was my first thought, too. Needs a necklace or a different neckline shape. I don’t want to find myself thinking “Did Amy Adams gain weight?” when she’s clearly in fantastic shape.

  • Capt. Renault

A solid choice. Not much to get excited about, but a solid choice.

  • MannahattaMamma

But Gal looks really happy and Amy looks…vaguely perplexed, as if she’s not quite sure how to sell it, but she’s trying, regardless.

  • Sagecreek

Looks like she stole it from La Aniston.

I’m with the Unks, I really don’t get her either. She can’t seem to figure out who she is.

  • I think she’s trying to balance being an award-nominated actress and being in loud blockbusters, and she’s just trying to figure out how to sell whichever one she’s doing at the time. Without blowing this up into some large feminist issue, but she should get to do editorials in bikini bottoms and rock a Princess Grace look on the red carpet if she wants to. She’s trying to show the world all those different sides of her personality. I wish she’d wear more interesting things on the red carpet, but that’s because of a selfish desire to look at something interesting and pretty. However, if what she prefers is these solid-saturated-color column gowns with bangin’ heels, then so be it.

    • Gatita

My take is that she’s comfortable sexing it up for the camera because that’s acting but she’s not comfortable doing it for a crowd.

      • That makes a lot of sense. I’d really love to see her street style, because I’m curious as to how she conveys herself to the world around her when she doesn’t feel like anyone’s watching.

        • Gatita

I saw pap pics of her with her daughter and she’s very much the casual but cute mom.

  • GemFemme

A bit on the dull side, but I can’t deny she looks pretty spectacular.

  • Kathie

I think this is pretty on her and the color is spectacular. Well done!

  • Rebeck

She really is just so beautiful. The dress is safe but gorgeous. She looks great coming and going.

  • evave2

Boy, I don’t like it at all.

  • steph

This screams BIG HONKING DIAMOND NECKLACE NEEDED!

    • beckly

Yes! And a HUGE 1960S LIZ TAYLOR UPDO. Not to mention some MASSIVE WINGED EYELINER. Then the lovely dress would be in balance with something. It’s got nothing to push against right now.

      • steph

Channel your inner Bridget Bardot Realness.

  • In_Stitches

She looks gorgeous, but there’s just something about it that doesn’t work for me. Is it the posing? She does look a bit ‘Miss America’ in those shots. There’s just this veneer separating who she is from the camera.

  • Aunt Kiki

Attagirl! Pretty perfect. It’s a bit of a sporty gown, in a good way. I think that’s the right feel for a superhero movie – it’s not a “serious” gown. Clean, fresh, great color. I’m in.

  • Tee

    Girl, let your hair down.

  • Wink

Needs more jewelry, but still lovely. This just seems to be her comfort zone. When she was poledancing for American Hustle – and bared her sternum for a year – she didn’t really look comfortable (or this good).

  • Lilithcat

That color is fantastic on her.

I like the dress, but the train, slit, and ruffle are a bit too much. Pick two of the three.

And add some big sparkly earrings, not those baby ones.

  • Little_Olive

Well I wouldn’t qualify this as not sexy. It’s just not overtly sexual as the editorials she has done recently, but she noes ‘t need to stick to that image all.the.time, no?

Anyway, I like it. That is a tricky color and it is singing on her. I wish the slit was a bit less open and she shoes were less heavy.

  • I don’t know, this reads “so what, I’m yawning” to me. Yes it’s a great color on her, but the details are nonexistent, as is the hairstyling. European premiere of a multimillion dollar blockbuster movie? Girl, do it up already.

  • B_C_J

This is very pretty & it’s definitely her aesthetic. I just wish she had opted for a million dollars worth of Harry Winston diamond earrings.

  • cocohall

This is her homage to Kate Winslet – find a shape that suits you in a solid color and go out looking professional and classy. But this round goes to Gal Gadot. Although Amy here is working “Serious Actress who is showing her range in a popcorn film” while Gal is all about announcing “I’m here world, pay attention!”

  • World of Sass

    Yawn and a half.

  • sousaphone93

Those shoes don’t really go but what really bugs me is the plain styling. I liked the gold bracelet as a nod to wonder woman but she needed bigger earrings to match.

  • MilaXX

She just comes across as bland. Unless she’s playing a character I find her boring as all get out. She rarely looks bad on the RC, just unremarkable

    • DeniseSchipani

      My sentiments exactly.

  • quiltrx

I like the dress a lot–beautifully designed and the color is terrific. I think ‘clean’ is kind of her style, if that makes sense.

  • Trixie A. Cooper

I think she looks great; color is fantastic and it is so nice to see a leg slit that is not obscene. My only quibble is the gold bracelet; it is so blah it is almost not there.

  • Thom

This is something Kate Winslet would consider… and I don’t mean that as a compliment. But yes, it’s lovely, if flat.

    • VCR1

Yes, this is totally a Kate Winslet type dress! I can picture her in it already.

  • VCR1

She’s been dressing kind of on the boring side for this movie. At least this one is in a great color. It seems like the stars of BvS are dressing a little nicer for the European premiere than the American one.

  • GoryDetails

I dunno. The color is one that I would normally like, but to me the dress looks really cheap – bargain-polyester cheap. Could be the lighting, I suppose, or perhaps her expressions, which really don’t look as if she’s enjoying the experience very much. [I’ve noticed that my feelings about how successful a look is have a lot to do with how fiercely the wearer is owning that look. (Compare and contrast Adams’ expressions with those of Gadot in that slammin’ red gown.)

    • Gatto Nero

I thought so, too. Something about the color and texture of the fabric cheapens the dress — and the scraped-back hair doesn’t do her justice.

    • Monabel

I think that is the matte blue for a nice wool crepe suit. It does not look like gown material.

  • That look is crying out for a necklace. If one simply can not do a necklace here, either some bigger/bolder earrings or hair down and blown out, please.

    • JauntyJohn

Just what I thought. A big, honking Elizabeth Taylor strand of sapphires, or something very modern.
      That and a blowout, imho.

  • fromanotherplanet

    If it ain’t broke…

    • Shawn EH

Perfect color for her eyes and hair.

  • Bland Gland

This look screams “I know I’m second fiddle to Gadot over there, so I’m just going to bring elegance.” The lack of glitzy jewelry (both of them needed glitzy jewelry) to me also says “lazy studio” more than anything else. Marvel is going to pick up on allllll of this and outdo them.

  • Anniegolightly

A nice pendant is all I ask for. Would have livened it up considerably.

  • tereliz

I kind of like that she stays safely in her comfort zone. It might be boring for folks like us, but if I was a rising star, I’d default to what I know works. She’s not a fashionista, but she always looks lovely and if her brand is boring, at least it’s stable. The biggest complaint I can make here is that the jewelry doesn’t have enough visual weight to hang with the dress.

  • The Moops

She looks amazing and the dress is stunning. Sometimes simple is best.

  • Tarquin

    *yawn*

  • Imasewsure

It’s boring but elegant overall and I do like the way the slit is situated (slituated?) to not point directly to the goods. The top is really really boring though

  • uprightcitizen

Now I want to see her and Debra Messing play sisters in a movie. Never noticed how similar they look before.

  • TerryMH

Take a breath girl. She looks like she’s not breathing.

  • Lurker

Hate the shoes. Wrong color, wrong type for the dress.
But the dress, hair/makeup & jewelry– FLAW. LESS!

  • PeaceBang

I love her and her stripper heels. Such a talent. Her posture in this dress is amahzing. I feel like she’s a busy, hard-working actor who dresses in standard Hollywood glam for events but who keeps getting styled as Ann-Margret kitten in fashion shoots. Not her fault, but it does create a disconnect.

  • Tatiana Luján

I wonder if she would feel more relaxed on the red carpet wearing lower heels

  • EEKstl

Call me madcap, but I actually love her in Kate Winslet’s gown.

  • dschubba

it’s pretty enough and gets the job done.

AKA the Amy Adams “of course”

  • unbornfawn

I have to agree with Lo. She hasn’t figured out her red carpet image. She has a tendency to look fine, yet, never quite fabulous. She has all the ingredients to look fabulous, however, she always tends to looking boring.

  • guyfromhoboken

I love Amy Adams…gorgeous…great actress. She dresses nice enough, but I think she keeps wearing the same dress over and over in different colors. She is doing an Aniston. Jennifer wore the same towel wrap dress for a few years. Amy keeps going to the strapless tight gown over and over. She varies it up occasionally, but generally its this style. It looks lovely on her, but I would like her to switch it u sometimes.

  • A_guy01

Poor Miss Amy came runner up and she knows it. You know what she’s thinking in that final picture?
“Imma take this stiletto and stab that Gadot bitch right through the fucking eye!”

  • Kaonashi

She looks lovely, but a little plain. Love the shoes…is that color pewter? Looks nice with the dress.

  • rubyclaire

Not in love with the hip ruffle.

  • Jenna621

I love the color, but I just wish she would do something more interesting with her hair than having it back all of the time. It’s such gorgeous hair…can’t we see it out and about sometimes?

  • Judih1

Wish she had more statement jewelry on.

  • Dhppy

This is an Antonio Berardi? It seems so Roland Mouret.

  • GoddessOfThunder

Love the cut and the color but wish she had cranked up her earring style a bit

  • largishbearishAtlish

Looks like she is in pain sucking in it. Somehow this looks like she is stuffed into it. Face and hair look nice. The back ground looks cheap. Poor thing, such a beautiful woman…

  • N

Wow, she finally brought it. Great colour, wonderful cut and her simple sleek styling is spot-on. She looks perfect and fab.

  • This is giving me deja vu like whoa.

  • DrMomLovesLife

For once, instead of “too much”, it’s “not enough”. Add some jewelry, an interesting clutch, lip color – something. Just looks unfinished.

  • KT

Ehh. Seen her wear a version of this a thousand times now. She’s becoming Kate Winslet 2.0

  • Fräulein K.

It is a great colour on her, a really beautiful shade of blue. And a nice dress, pretty, well fitted, tasteful, staid, deadly dull. Everyone takes Helena Bonham-Carter seriously as an actress, right? I don’t think you need to look safe and boring to be taken seriously as an actress, but I do get that this is probably close to her personal style; safe and boring.

  • Fred Vaughn

Blues keep being Amy’s sweet spot.
