Rihanna in Armani Privé at the BRIT Awards 2016

Rihanna attends the BRIT Awards 2016 at The O2 Arena in London, England.

We don’t understand. When we hear the words “Armani Privé,” we tend to think “slinky” or “sexy” or “tailored.”

So why is this so unflattering on her? It makes her bust look smaller and her waist look thicker. Giorgio, maybe you should have pulled back a little on the enthickening Swarovski crystals and worried a little more about fit. It’s not even particularly flattering on the model walking the runway. It’s a pretty idea, but it probably shouldn’t be deployed on a gown in this style.

In addition, while the color and sparkle are very pretty on her, we don’t think that lavender actually does much for her. Or maybe we’re just annoyed about the matching eyeshadow and anchor woman hair. Ri, we luvya and we realize you have a superhuman style range, but this may be one of those looks that just isn’t in your wheelhouse.

Granted, we’re not sure in whose wheelhouse it should be.

Also — it could be a play of the light — but the back looks torn in a few places.

    • I thought so too. It looks like sections are coming away.

    • SewingSiren

I think that is intentional. The dress appears to be a sheer body with multiple fan shaped flounces attached in diagonal rows, only the top edge of the flounce is attached so they can fly away slightly giving risqué glimpses of the sheer body underneath.

      • tereliz

Definitely intentional. And tacky AF, IMO. The hair’s too conservative to give it that funkiness she usually brings to the RC, and the fit makes her look lumpy when we all know exactly where Rihanna’s lumps are.

      • littlemac8

I really enjoy your commentary on garment construction!

    • Lily

I noticed there are several places on the front and the back where transparent spots appear. I thought it intentional.

  • steph

The fit is terrible. The whole thing needs to be hiked up about 2 inches cause the dress looks like it’s falling off her bust line. I agree that this garment is making her look thicker than she is.

    • makeityourself

      The dreaded “enthickening.”

  • That poor dress needed a lot of surgery. I hope its scars don’t show.

  • I don’t think her heart is in this one. It all screams of obligation and lack of confidence. That latter being something I never thought I’d say about Ms. Rihanna.

  • Wink

Fix the bust and make it knee length.

  • Anna

Armani Prive by way of Roberto Cavalli.

  • cocohall

If the dress is making Rihanna look a little wide in the mid-section, it really is a FMO dress – Rihanna has a more athletic build and this dress does nothing to showcase her great body. I’m assuming she fell in love with the textile and decided to wear it despite the fact that it really does not flatter her in fit or color.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

mmmm… I don’t like this look and the dress is only a small part of it. The wrist tattoo is starting to look like a wrist brace at first. I’m not totally against tattoos….but her’s are really discordant with soft classically feminine dresses or really high end gowns, etc. Her look almost always only works for me when it’s street/club style.

  • JerFeist

Huh… You’d figure this would be a lot easier to pull off, since the primary form is so simple, but all that tiering and embellishing just obscures everything. This is a dress immune to shape or fit.

  • jilly_d

    Dat amethyst, though.

  • Lily

While it’s a bit conservative as far as RiRi goes, I like the idea of this for her. The fit is my only quibble.

  • Janet B

Pretty fabric does not make a gown.

  • Kent Roby

I’m just thrilled that she’s not in yet-another completely sheer dress for a change (she, though, is clearly unhappy about that fact).

    • MissAmynae

Exactly. This is closer to the style she wore before she was UBERfamous- a bit looser and more body-skimming, rather than “here’s my bits.” I don’t hate it, despite the fit issues.

  • SewingSiren

I rather like this for her. It’s quieter than her usual style. The straps appear to be a bit too long, but the fit at the waist I think is as it should be. The dress looks like a nod to the twenties chemise with very little definition at the waist. She’s a gal with a hourglass( ish) figure, if the waist isn’t emphasized you do look a little tree trunky. Just for one night it’s okay.

  • happygolucky7

Rihanna has a PhD in wearing tricky outfits, and coming out of it looking gorgeous. If a dress doesn’t work on her, it’s most certainly the fault of the dress, to an unforgivable degree.

  • MilaXX

It’s not bad just not very good. If I didn’t know this was designer I would think this was someone’s prom look.

  • Bad Idea Jeans

    Coffee filter dress.

    • Barbara Affolter

      Totally. Mychael Knight should sue.

  • Karen B

Does anyone else see little stick figures in odd positions in the pattern on her dress?

    • Catherine

I didn’t until you mentioned it. Now it’s all I can see! Looks like figures on a yoga position poster.

      • Karen B

At the top of her right breast, they look like A Chorus Line

    • kimmeister

It’s like a flip book of a stick figure doing calisthenics. You’ve nailed it.

    • kerryev

I saw black mold. Yours is way more fun.

  • Little_Olive

This dress could have been quite fabulous; but RiRi only played to the tackiness in it.

The fact that some of the “oyster shells” don’t cover the base layer in some parts just Drives.Me.Crazy.

    • N

Exactly, the dress is delicate and feminine, it’s Rihanna’s tackiness that didn’t let it work.

  • Catherine

She’s been wearing some really unflattering things lately and they all seem to make her look like she has no waist.

  • Heather Chandler

It’s not not-pretty. The overall effect makes her hips look trunk like and her bust look like the smallest part of her body, which sucks. But I actually think it would be really nice on someone taller and with less shape. Nicole Kidman?

  • FrigidDiva

It looks like coffee filters that have been dyed lavender and tacked together with black yarn.

  • Linda LaPaz

It’s sitting to low on her bust, too, I think.

  • queeniethebold

    What an unbelievably unflattering gown!

  • Kathleen

Here’s the problem with the fit: The straps are too long. They make it plunge lower, but the overall effect makes her look very short-waisted. Look at her armpits…the side of the dress shouldn’t be hitting that low. Look where it is on the model; that’s where it’s supposed to be. It ends up making her boobs look droopy, when of course they are not. Hoist up the straps – problem solved.

    • AnnaFalacksis

Exactly! I was going to comment the same thing. It all needs pulling up.

  • Gatto Nero

Nothing about this is flattering on her — proportions, silhouette, embellishments, color.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    Love that ring.

  • Stuart Miller

The dress is extremely unflattering and makes her look overweight–which she of course is not. And I hate those cutouts on the skirt–that peek-a-boo thing is rather obnoxious. And I HATE HATE HATE all the tattoos.

  • Pennymac

Barbed wire and cupcake liners was my first thought.

  • JMD

I’m sorry, but all I can see is the coffee filter dress from Project Runway…

    • Scarlet39

      Michael Knight!

  • KinoEye

Shades of Rosamund Pike’s disastrous Golden Globes dress in the fit and shape. I’m not sure it’s anyone’s dress, and am sad to see it on Ri.

  • Liliter

For me, the main problem is the hair. I love her performance outfit during the Brits though, very eye catching.

  • Cheryl

I like the idea, but yeah it isn’t working for her; and if it is unflattering on Rihanna and the model, who the heck will it work on? I’m not anti-tattoo, but I really dislike that big chest tattoo. She’s worn a few outfits that it has been so discordant on.

  • Cara

My best friend’s older sister wore this to prom in 1998. I mean, at the time it was by Walmart. But this is the same exact dress.

  • Imasewsure

I think I hate this type of lavender more than I hate peach…. belongs in an Easter basket… and the fit is no bueno for both RiRi and the model (which means the design sucks anyway)

  • OffToSeeHim

Nice try, but this isn’t a gown that can be deployed with working breasts. With breasts at all, really, but especially not with breasts that have ever been used for their actual purpose. I say this because I’m sporting a 38-Long over here, and I can’t wear tops like this at all.

  • I like it, but it needs to be higher in the front. That tattoo makes it look like she has a ballpoint pen stuck in her cleavage.

  • JaCory Deon

I may be in the minority here but I absolute hate this pedestrian, pretty girl (aka “basic chick”) hair/makeup she’s pulling here. She looks better edgier. This is just drab, lowkey, and a big ole nothing (very similar to her latest album but that’s another issue altogether).

    • beckly

      +1. She looks…ordinary.

  • anotherkate

I can’t forgive what it’s doing to her actually amazing ass.

I do like lavender on her, though. Brings out her eyes.

  • Amber J

If a dress can make Rihanna look shapeless and thick-waisted, it’s a dud.

  • N

The dress is very pretty on the runway but I agree, it simply doesn’t suit or fit Rihanna properly. You need someone with a more refined style and presence for this. Put it on Lily James, for example, and it’s a knockout.

    • N

..or Alicia Vikander or lean and statuesque Nicole Kidman as suggested and so on.. The dress is fine, it’s delicate and feminine. Rihanna just neither has the right frame or style, sophistication and presence to make it work.

  • Cyprienne Zed

  • Fräulein K.

She seems to be in some sort of style slump right now, it’s been all boring and unflattering for a little while. Hope she gets out of it soon.

  • nycfan

Also, I hate the little gaps where the material is drooping … makes it look like they were in some timed contest and didn’t have time to even super-glue it along the seams.

  • BlackCatBitch

Dress= blah. Jewels = TO DIE FOR.

  • Kaonashi

This isn’t fitted very well. It makes her look lumpy.

  • SADO50

Love her. Hate the new hair and this dress is atrocious……(Armani usually is anyway).

  • alyce1213

Who’d imagine that Rihanna would look so blah in Armani. J’adore Armani, but not this one.

  • GillianHolroyd

It would’ve helped the proportions immensely if she’d worn an underwire to boost the girls.

  • portlandmermaid

Enthickening is a new one for me, I’m going to use whenever I can. Oh, yeah Rihanna, she’s too pretty for that pale color and that waist is enthickening. She’s young and edgy and looks great in bolder colors and styling.

  • CatLady

I like the idea of the dress but it just obliterates her figure.

  • avoir_du_chien

Her hair takes me back to those “Umbrella” asymmetrical bob days…

    Remember that RiRi?!

  • Shyla

I could maybe see it on one of the Fanning girls.

  • MzzPants

Sometimes even the genetically blessed need to steer clear of horizontal lines.

  • Robbie Claxton

I liked the peepholes. It showed very modest sex appeal(the knees are so hot right now lol) but seriously can this chick do any wrong? I have never seen her not look cool.

  • Angelique Nolan

This is unflattering in every way. It also gives me more Monique Lhulllier (don’t sic the spell patrol on me) than Armani Prive.
