Kittens, we have been spewing opinions at the world for about 18 hours straight with barely time enough to eat or nap. We don’t really like this look at all, but we’re gonna go eat a late lunch rather than run down a list of critiques. You defend it to us or tell us why you agree.

In other words, it’s that age-old question:

Kerry Washington’s Leather Brunhilde Gown:

IN or OUT?

Remember to show your work.

  • somebody blonde

IN! She looks fierce and fabulous.

    • BayTampaBay

Agree! I am going to let her slide because she was not a nominee and did not need a “ball gown”. This dress is a little on the casual side for the Oscars IMHO

    • KLeigh

I like her face but am meh about the dress

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m really liking Kerry Washington in this look-it’s got some sass to it, and her hair and face are perfect. IN

    • Daenyx

Definitely in. To me it’d even be a werq if not for the messy hair. She looks like a warrior goddess in the best way, and that dress is far more interesting than most of the rest of the red carpet that night.

    • livesarah

In for me too. It’s a bit out there for the Oscars, but I appreciated that. Not loving her hair, again… She favours that pulled-back, slightly messy style, and it just doesn’t work well for her.

  • Nance

Out by a smidge. Seems like a bit of a frankendress to me, I personally am ambivalent about the top and hate the skirt.

    • anyalama

I feel the same. If the neckline were just a tad lower and the skirt didn’t have those weird strappy bits on it, it’d be a huge improvement.

    • Nathan

I think the top could have been great with a more structured skirt. Take that warrior princess vibe all the way.

    • higgledypiggledy

Frankendress, absolutely. The odd leather straps on her hips are ‘tying the bustier to the skirt’ literally but not figuratively. Maybe some kind of black and white print in the skirt would have pulled it together better? This is a swing and a miss.

      • kittyvscupcake

Yeah, the skirt is where the look really falls short. The slit is also ridiculously high.

    • FuhUgh

I vote out also. It is beautifully fitted, and those earrings are (quite literally!) to die for, but the leather bodice with the table cloth skirt just do not work together. And those “hip belts” – what are those? They are not exactly flattering.

      • littlemac8

I agree with OUT! However I think the leather top is giving her a uniboob or some lumpy look. Those hip things are not good either.

      • Catherine

Agree about the earrings. I need some Harry Winston jewels in my life.

  • Carisac

I love it. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that in a year dominated by a discussion of the absence of black actors from the nominees, she wore a black-and-white warrior ensemble. I think it’s a great message piece – and as always, she looks like a million bucks.

    • megohd

      I like your interpretation!

      • Carisac

Thanks. She’s a smart woman who has opinions on this stuff.

    • Heathery

I hated the dress until reading this.

    • Tracy M

I like your interpretation, too- however, while *she* looks fantastic, the neckline is wonky and keeps making me look at it like my dog when he’s confused. Something is happening there that’s just… off. But I can totally get behind the message, if that’s what was intended.

    • Lauren

If the “message” has to be explained – and the “ensemble” excused because of said message it was trying to convey, then the look, “ensemble” and and “message” has failed.

  • Carol

IN, it looked fabulous on screen plus it was different from all the other gowns. There were too many safe and boring gowns this year.

  • GregoireNYC

Totally an IN although its more about her beauty and poise than it is about the dress which is overly complicated.

    • jen

      Exactly!

  • smh4748

In by a hair. Things that make this close to an out include that AWFUL slit, which could arguably take this into out territory all on its own; and the neckline, which seems slightly asymmetrical, but not enough for me to tell if it’s intentional–just enough to bug me.

That said, I think it’s interesting and different enough that it kind of works, and her face looks amazing.

    • JLou

The bodice bugs me, too. I thought that it was the way she was posing that made it seem crooked, but I’m coming around to your idea that the bodice is a badly-designed wee bit of asymmetry. A lower-case in for me.

  • Boobs Radley

It’s an Out. Something about that hip detail feels like a saddle to me and I don’t much care for it. Goodness, that slit is high, isn’t it? The makeup is pretty, although I’d do a stronger lip with such a strong dress. Also not feeling the yoga ponytail.

    • Nancy Arseneault-Heald

That slit is way too high. In that one shot of her taking a step I’m surprised we don’t see her goodies.

  • Jen

Out. So many of her RC outfits are just a mess and this is the same.

    • bean

      yep

    • Carly Clement

yep a big old mess to me – not only is the dress a frankeindress with a wonky bodice and random straps and waaay to high slit it feels wrong for the venue. additionally the styling is terrible! those shoes, that hair and makeup are all wrong!!!!!

  • That hip detail ruined this for me. OUT.

  • OneRing

Out. Unless, perhaps, she’s a goddess of Phobos.

  • makeityourself

OUT. The asymmetry of the bodice isn’t dramatic enough, so it just looks like a mistake. Hate the contrasting, curved details on the skirt front. Just hate it period.

    • Wink

The bodice is asymmetrical? I thought she was just ‘leaning’ like Eddie Redmayne!

      • Fitzperry

So did I! It looks like an accident. I also hate the straps (all over) and the slit. OUT!

  • Wink

IN. But a straight/bodycon skirt would have been much better than this flowy thing.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Mostly Out – The good – her skin is luminous… amazing! Head looks good and it’s a semi interesting idea for a dress. But I’m not feeling the top with the skirt. And another exaggerated thigh high slit??? Over it.

  • Anna

Perfect for those brides having their wedding at a BDSM dungeon.

    • bean

“dominatrix wedding gown” was my EXACT first impression

  • Amber J

I wish the skirt wasn’t white. I feel the leather bodice would go better with a darker color, like a deep emerald green or a super saturated purple.

    • VCR1

I like the idea of a jewel toned skirt instead of white for this dress.

  • Lily

    OUT!

The leather Gladiator leather breastplate gives her uniboob. The slit is obnoxious, and overall, I just don’t get that “old world” sense of glamour and styling one expects at the Oscars. I’ve seen her styled much better!

  • stellavision

It looks weirdly put together, but she gets an IN from me anyway for being willing to take a risk on Oscar night.

  • OUT hate the neckline, hate the straps, hate the colorblocking.

  • Shawn EH

Love it. Donna Summer Realness. I like that sexy dominatrix thing Donatella can do at her best; leather up top, swirly skirt below. Velvet gloves over steel fists come to mind. IN!

  • Somebody_Something

OUT… A Naugahyde couch died for this dress. Loved her hair, makeup, and jewelry, though.

  • Aunt Kiki

OUT. Warrior princess on top, princess princess on the bottom. That hip detail bugs and points off for standing with your leg out of the slit. Face is FABULOUS though.

  • KayEmWhy

In – It’s different and unexpected/Out – not a dress for The Oscars.

  • IN. She is gorgeous and she looks like a queen here. My only quibble is the shape of the top of the bodice — it’s a few inches too high and the curve is weird. But that’s minor compared to the overall effect which to me looks dramatic and regal and Xena-esque all at the same time.

  • In_Stitches

It’s a little too ‘Xena the Warrior Princess on her very special day’ OUT

    • mary potter

Too funny. I thought she looked like Xena warrior princess forgot to pack her good toga top to go to the fancy party and had to throw this together on the fly. And also she’s totally an out.

  • steph

    Face is an in.
The dress, is an Out. The skirt has too much volume and the bodice is just not attractive.
I keep on hearing Flight of the Valkyries when I see here.

  • CozyCat

out:. the dress is ok, but the hair and makeup somehow ages her substantially and takes no advantage of her beautiful features.. I think she could have carried this off with free flowing, softer hair, but the harshness of this look just doesn’t work for her

  • kimmeister

I don’t hate it, but it’s an out for the lumpiness in the bust, and I would have liked a less nude lip color.

  • KinoEye

That FACE. Makeup is on point. I could be convinced to like this dress if the bust were less awkward, but as it stands, a very mild OUT. She attempted something different, snaps for that.

  • AndieJay

In, because she looks gorgeous, bet I really hate those black straps threaded through the skirt. They pull too much attention away from the overall impact of the look.

  • guyfromhoboken

Innish. I like it overall, but the neckline feels like it comes up too high. Also the slit should be closed a little because right now, she risks showing her Kerry to the world.

  • KingCrazy

I actually don’t hate the dress, I just don’t think she’s the right girl for it. I also don’t like the curve details on the skirt.

But, an in overall if I have to pick.

  • IN. Hate the hair and I think she could do with nixing the straps, but she looks fierce, well put together and attention seeking. All the things we want in an Oscars dress.

  • Bonobochick

    In.

Also, a friend & I had discussed how both this gown choice and her after Oscars party gown were screaming “I’m single!”

  • Buellie413

Out. The bodice looks like body armor and I don’t like what the slit does to the shape of the skirt. Her head looks great though.

  • VCR1

Out. I think the bodice is cut too high and while i like how different it is, in the end it’s just not a flattering dress. Her hair is a total out. What happened? It looks like a mess.

  • Imasewsure

Perfect dress for the VMAs or a lessor venue… but not Oscar worthy really
So IN for the look but OUT for the venue… it’s an INOUT

  • Capt. Renault

    OUT. Backwards backpack.

  • Out. Leather is too casual for the Oscars.

  • Shannyn Marie

    In. Edgey warrior glam

  • PlethoraofBooks

Out. Leather corset and weird open leather circles. Remember the good old days when we thought she was well styled?

  • Judy_S

I didn’t like this on the red carpet–for many reasons cited. But when she walked on stage as a presenter I thought it worked well, i.e. from a distance. The slit went from peekaboo to easy-to-stride in, for example, and the graphic circles on the hips looked properly dramatic.

  • In! I love the armor look

  • Zippypie

OUT – this is a Grammys gown. It’s too Frankendress. Hair and makeup are fierce though.

    • Karen

I first read your comment as “Granny’s” and I was so excited to meet a grandmother who would wear this dress.

      • Zippypie

Can you imagine Queen Helen in this dress? Woo hoo!

  • Sam Smith

I’m not really a fan, but her look has more interest than most of the others. It seemed everyone went with basic pretty so its nice to see something with a little interest to it. But, please put your leg away.

  • Sponsored by Lululemon.

  • happygolucky7

OUT. Her Oscar look shouldn’t scream “hey, guys, did you know I’m in a television show in which “gladiator!” Is, like, a call to arms or a catchphrase or whatever?”

  • krelnick

    A boob-puckering Xena rip-off? Outty-out-OUT!

  • Sarah

Fit is janky up top. Out.

  • JaymeKay

Out. Leather tank top with matching elephant bells.

  • macwell

IN. As soon as I saw outfit, and heard her interviews on the red carpet, I got that her appearance was her way of delivering her message on the stark whiteness of the nominations. The leather bodice seemed to embody strength and power, and served as a striking contrast to the white status flow of the lower portion of the dress. The jewelry gave a nice punch. I’m ambivalent about the heels. Some sort of silver would have been better.

    • Lurker

      YAAAAS!!!!

  • Anne Meek White

    OUT.

  • OrangeChia

    Out. Blah.

  • ovarB

Out. The rigidity of the top is too “super hero breast plate” and makes zero sense with the full skirt. Add to that the weirdness of the black leather circles on her hips. OUT!!!

  • Miss Ruth

OUT, because it’s giving me boobsweat just looking at it.

  • Gatto Nero

Out, The threaded leather bits seem to be a lame attempt to integrate the top and bottom. Fail. The fit in the bodice is off and the slit it too high. The “hard/soft” thing isn’t working.
    And put that leg away.

  • Talia

I didn’t know she wore a scoliosis brace.

  • Karen B

Out. She looks like Ms World Biker Goddess 2016. I hate the leather bodice, especially paired with the ethereal skirt

  • Jaeda Laurez

IN. Love it from head to toe.

  • anotherkate

Overall I dig the warrior princess look, although I think the slit is WAY too high. Flirting with a good China sighting on that walking shot, yeesh.

Nevertheless, she’s IN for me. Dress is interesting and fierce, hair and makeup are gorgeous, and that’s good enough for me.

  • SewingSiren

The mod leather bodice and ponytail are Emma Peel fabulous, but the designer ran out of steam at the skirt. The plain white crepe super high slit is just so generic. Now a bugle beaded pencil in a dark iridescent would have put her on everyones best dress list.

  • ejsesqueer

is the bodice supposed to be higher on one side or is this a case of titscrepency??

  • Frank_821

THis is a gown that people will either love or hate. It’s worth talking about and the designs elemnts are at least original

I hate high slit though. totally unnecessary

    marginal in

  • HellsBellsTrudy

The dress is fine. That hair though….

  • hmariec19

OUT. The bodice looks like she borrowed it from Bruce Wayne.

    • Sekhmet6

      More likely Robin.

  • Doggie Mom

Back looks nice, but the front of the bodice is weirdly lumpy and looks too much like armor. I have to say OUT.

  • JasmineAM

IN- because at least it’s interesting, and i think the dress looks pretty cool.

  • glanor mandy

Out, because the bust is too big on her, the slit is too high, the hair could have been better and this outfit needed a killer lip. So the idea is good but the execution is sloppy.

  • Corsetmaker

Out.. I like the concept but not the execution.

  • Sekhmet6

Out! A re-purposed spare tire cover from a PR automotive challenge.

  • Bea

OUT. The bust looks askew from some angles, and on camera. So distracting.

  • Janet B

    Out
The bodice is pretty fabulous, although a bit lumpy from extra strap material or something.
    The skirt is horrible.

eta: if the bodice were a bustier and another skirt could be worn it would be 100% better

  • lunchcoma

This one really is hard. I like both the top and the bottom of the dress, but think each deserved to be paired with something else. Very slight IN, because her hair and makeup look great.

  • susan6

I love the bodice. Not too crazy about the straps that go down on the skirt. And the slit….yeah, I don’t want to know what kind of panties she’s wearing. Not information I need. But….the strong parts of the outfit combined with flawless face makes it an IN.

  • MrBanstupidity

Gorgeous face! Her outfit looks fine.

  • EEKstl

OUT. I DETESTED this look on first viewing but it’s become less hiddy the more I see it. That said, this was a HORRIBLE choice when one knows a zillion lights and cameras are going to be photographing you from every angle. I swear from one angle I saw Batman nipples. I swear I did. The light does very funny things to that bodice and not in a good way. Bad choice but I do applaud her gumption for choosing it.

  • Cara

Out – It’s the wrong venue. A different venue would have made this look a little fiercer and less try-hard/

  • evave2

    OUT.

  • Ssquared1105

Honestly, when I saw her standing next to Henry Cavil, Kerry in that dress made me think of Wonder Woman movies that could have been.

  • BlackCatBitch

IN. It was a risk, and its memorable, and its interesting enough without being overly styled. She isn’t going to extremes to prove a point, but isn’t going quietly into the night. She is yielding towards a weapon, but isn’t threatening. She sings softly, and sweetly yet the voice is penetrating. OK. Ill stop while I am ahead with the odd and vague poetic comparisons.

    Also, she is just gorgeous.

  • This is so badass! IN

  • Lurker

    IN. Warrior Queen Hotness!
    The accessories are just enough.
    Hair/Makeup– Perfection.
KW took a risk & it paid off.
On a RC where the great Iris Apfel said: “Everyone looks the same”, she definitely wasn’t talking about Kerry Washington.

  • Cathy S

I really like it but I wish she wasn’t doing the Angelina leg pose. It takes the fierceness away. She’s still IN though. It’s very different and I like that it’s softer on the bottom. Just, put the leg back please.

  • ftbttmgrl

I kinda like it, except for the way the bust is constructed. And that is distracting af. OUT. Edit: also very not here for whatever the hell is going on with the shoes.

  • OldTownGail

Out. That dress is way too tricky to end up so boring.

  • StrictTime

It would be so much more interesting with a full chiffon-y skirt with no AJL slit.

  • Maluca

Out. She looks amazing but that bodice and skirt are just not right. Especially the bodice. To stiff and tall.

  • megexpat

OUT. The neckline is weirdly placed and shaped and I am OVER the slit that reaches up past the vagina.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Out. I don’t like the bodice — it makes her look boxy.

  • nannypoo

So far out it’s irredeemable. And when she walks you can practically see her pubes. She is way better than this.

  • JimMcC

IN! It’s simplicity with an edge. The leather detail tying the bodice to the skirt works beautifully, and the earrings and make-up are sheer perfection.

  • ms_kat

Out. I like the top quite a bit, but the skirt is a awful and mismatched. The heavy leather needs something else to balance the bottom. Also, out because the back of her head looks good, but the top? Nope.

  • Lilithcat

I mostly like it, but I feel that the slit is too much. It gives it a costume-y feel. Without that, it would be fabulous.

    Mild lN.

  • Jenn

OUT. The top and skirt don’t seem to really go together and honestly the top looks cheap, especially where the straps attach. The bodice is funky and makes her look lumpy.

  • dschubba

Out, because of the good china slit, the unnecessary leather detailing on the skirt, and the crappy shoe. Plus, the bodice seems to sit a little too high/the straps are too short.

  • butterna

In, 100% gladiator, but I would omit the leg split. It kills the design.

  • what not

IN. I loved this dress, except for the awkward neckline.

  • Molly Flores

Bodice looks a little wonky at times, but overall she’s stunning! IN.

  • shopgirl716

Out. Boring, boring, boring. She can do better

  • tereliz

Lowercase in. I want to like it for being so bold and edgy, but I don’t love what seems to be happening beneath the bodice in the bust area. Not sure if it’s her undergarment, but that swathe of leather is very reflective in the photos and the distortion is all I can see. I really like the contrast of black and white, and the leather detailing that joins the two parts keeps it from being a true Frankendress in my mind. Not crazy about the hair, but I love the earrings and the sex-kitten makeup.

  • samo_samo

In…I really don’t like the dress AT ALL, BUT Miss Kerry is making it work. SHE looks lovely and confident; the dress on the other hand – the gyno curtain slit, the weird bodice and the leather belting looped through the dress – I’m not feeling any of it. It took some Ph.D. level dress wearing skills to pull off wearing that dress and I believe she succeed.

  • MilaXX

IN, Not sold on the shoe, but overall I think it works

  • crash1212

IN. I liked the intricacy of the leather. It fit her like a glove. Her head looked pretty. Only downside is that slit…lordy, that was a close one.

  • lisaepc

IN! I can’t imagine this look on another person.

  • Bland Gland

OUT. The bottom of the dress is terrible. The top looks like she can’t breathe.

  • Tiff79

BDSM Stormtrooper with Jolie leg? So far the hell OUT.

  • Sanglots longs

Out. No one at my house could quite figure out what this was supposed to be doing.

  • Eric Stott

OUT- bodice is an orthopedic device- and YET ANOTHER COOCHIE SLIT!

  • A Shiny O’Connor

I like the idea of this. Unfort another gown that looks like a 12 hr PR challenge.

  • Mary Elizabeth Poytinger Baume

in, Different enough in a world of boring ass gowns to stand out.

  • Little_Olive

    OUT.
I’m bored with her. She is not made for complicated/avant garde looks as she thinks she is.

  • penguinmom

OUT. Gimme the harry winston jewelry and nobody gets hurt. But beyond those fabulous earrings, I see a lot to dislike. The contrast of the stiff black leather and the white skirt just doesn’t work. And the black leather what-evers on the skirt make no design sense at all. The slit is way too high. The lip is way too pale— although I’ve about decided she does that so her face is even more dominated by those magnificent, gorgeous, impressive eyes.

  • JG

OUT. Off-kilter, unflattering neckline all make the bodice look cheap. SHE is gorgeous.

  • alocin

Out. It looks kind of Star Trek Shatner love interest to me. But not in a good way. She is beautiful, as per.

  • Stubenville

It looks like a one piece bathing suit with a cover-up. Fail. (But she still looks stunning despite the Frankendress.)

  • rbk

A big fat OUT. White fabric is too stiff at the bottom, the bodice is ill-proportioned and the hair looks like it was done in 10 minutes.

  • Eva_baby

    IN. I LOVED this.

  • GemFemme

OUT. The place where the shoulder straps attach to the bustier looks so horribly done. I don’t like the black bustier with the flowing white skirt. Maybe if the white fabric was in a silver metallic.

  • Lilah

Out. I think the hip detail is what gives it interest, but the top of the bodice is too high and it destroys the proportions.

  • In from the waist up. Dat booty is helping.

  • Akemi

Out. The top looks really odd, and it doesn’t go with the skirt at all.

  • Out – she looks like she’s wearing an exoskeleton.

  • Chloe Denmark

Very warrior princess, I’m gonna say in, but I hate the straps on the bodice.

  • Luca

it’s plain and simply a ugly dress. out!

  • belfebe

OUT. It was a stiff and weird look.

  • DCinUSA

I feel like she has this ability to take a dress that is edgy and make it look tame. OUT

  • OUT. She has leather hip straps. She’s holding up her white skirts with leather straps. Her leather corset is on top of a white bedsheet. Which of these phrases speaks OUT most eloquently?

  • Sofia Lopez Garcia

    IN! The look is fierce!

  • 60Gal

The top comes up very high under her arms. A rash and pain in the making. Out. But, her smile is gorgeous.

  • funkydonut

IN. I love this – I think she looks like a warrior goddess!

  • Adorable Goofball

Out. The bodice isn’t laying (lying? I can never remember) flat. What’s she hiding in there? A dagger? Her face and hair are gorgeous, though.

  • Dea

I love it. I think she looks like a war goddess ready to swoop down and turn the tide.

  • snevhead

OUT. not appropriate for the event. the left boob doesn’t fit. she needs a stronger lip.

  • Neck up, gorgeous. Everything south of that is a hot mess. OUT, OUT, a thousand times OUT.

  • VioletFem

IN. She looks amazing and this is easily one of her top 5 looks.

  • Bonnie Blue

Out – the bodice looks like it’s choking her with how high up it comes under her arms, don’t like the strappy things on the skirt.

  • stellamaris73

Out. Above the neck, she looks gorgeous. But the bust of that gown is so poorly fitted to her shape and proportions. Tragique.

  • queeniethebold

Out. It is awkward looking, not edgy. Actually, it’s kind of ugly. And that slit is wayboyhowdy too high.

    Out. Full stop.

  • sherrietee

    Xena warrior princess. Out.

  • Mona_Visa

Out. The leg posing turns me off immediately. The hair is messy, and the dress… No. The top is simply not fitted correctly, it’s very unflattering to her bosoms, which– considering that’s where the focus is trying to be, given this design– is odd.

  • Stubing

Mildly out. The way the bodice is sloping down is not doing it for me. And I think the slit is too high.

  • Tatiana Luján

Absolutely OUT. This dress is hideous.

  • GoddessOfThunder

I want to like this but it just feels a bit too much like a Hot Topic designer broke free and did a gown…her face is flawless, but with the proverbial slit and heaviness of the top and the horseshoe prints on the skirt it just doesn’t work as an Oscars gown…out

  • Fannie Wolston

in if not for that slit so out

  • Erica Woods Tucker

I like the top, but I wish it had stopped at the bodice. And no split. Otherwise I like the difference of it.

  • Tracy_Flick

Mmmmmm. I don’t know. I would love it with a different neckline and straps, as it is, it looks like high-end luggage. Overall, though, it’s a striking look, and she’s beautiful in it, so I say IN.

  • semigeekgirl

Out. The only thing I like is the earrings.

  • AlisonHendryx

    OUT.

  • picarica

Hipster butcher’s apron meets breastplate. Ew.

  • Gatita

In from the waist up. Hair, FACE, and leather all great. That white bedsheet on the bottom kills the look.

  • Out, because all I can see is a Project Runway contestant trying to be edgy.

  • HK4Seven

IN, but take the shoulder straps off. They look like they were tacked on and they don’t look even to me. If it’s supposed to be assymetrical, go big or go home!

  • rubyclaire

I keep flipping back and forth between mild IN and mild OUT. I like the top part but there is way too much white fabric attached – the skirt is too bulky. It’s doubling over itself in the back and the slit in the front makes the skirt look like a big bulky parted curtain. I guess I’ll come down on the side of a mild OUT.

  • Oh, this is a clear OUT for me. I hate the top of the bodice — why is it so high? It looks like it’s trying to creep up and eat her face. And speaking of too high, the slit is outrageously high. In that side shot, it’s about a millimeter away from revealing her ladybusiness.

  • Kathy Comer

In. Fierce Gladiator Princess. But I do think that slit is way too high.

  • SorayaS

Oddly I’d say IN. It goes against my fist instinct (cosplay) but I honestly can’t fault the proportions, fit or details. It’s unique and memorable and she looks flipping gorgeous.

  • mdcoon127

Out, don’t like anything about it. Not flattering to her shape, the execution of the pleather looks cheap. Not a hit.

  • 2ranma75

I don’t care how those straps are going in an out of the whole thing. The top doesn’t belong with the skirt. The makeup is great but the hair has seen better days. The jewelry is gorgeous but doesn’t really go with the outfit. Meanwhile the shoes are just meh. So. OUT

  • Bowildhaze

OUT – Zena, Warrior Princess by WhiteHouse/BlackMarket. Kerry…. Kerry… Her Vanity Fair party dress wasn’t much better, but it was better. Risk taking is great, but this?

  • largishbearishAtlish

OUT. The Jr X-men auditions were next Sunday…. my first thought was ‘so that’s where my pleather couch went….” 2 outfits meet in a bar and….no.

  • marlie

IN. I really like this, even though I have issues with it. The bodice seems tilted, similarly to Emily Blunt’s, and I think the black leather straps on her hips are unnecessary, but overall, I like the hard/soft aspect of it. I’m rarely crazy about her hair, but this is ok, and same goes for the makeup, though I like the eyes, and wish she had a stronger lip.

  • Katie

I’m not loving the nod to her gladiator identity from her show that’s aired on the same network. Maybe I just haven’t had enough coffee today, but it’s bugging me.

  • gattita

IN. I like it! It’s interesting and you hardly ever see that at the Oscars. I wish the neckline were lower. But the styling is fabulous. I love the cat eye she’s going going on – very fierce way to highlight her beautiful eyes.

  • In, because I appreciate that it’s a different look if imperfect. It seems like they wanted her to represent what Olivia Pope would wear to the Oscars, this being a big ABC bash and all.

  • AnneElliot

IN. At first I didn’t like it because of the black straps woven around the skirt, but then I realized the top was LEATHER! You go, badass warrior!

That is a seriously high slit in front, though!

  • alyce1213

Out. Very, very Out. The leather is ridiculous.

  • Kimberlini

IN The dress would be so much better is it didn’t have a slit and the fit of the bodice is wonky but Miss Kerry looked so beautiful last night that it just doesn’t matter. These photos don’t do her justice. Her eyes, in particular, were perfect.

  • Qitkat

I’ll give an IN to the dress, as she is rockin’ it, but I really really dislike her hair when it is styled like this, that is an unfortunate bumpit, especially from the side view. Nevertheless she is beautiful. But the red carpet was awash with super high dress slits last evening, almost peeking at the Good China.

  • &theJets

IN! She looks badass and that bodice is like armor.

  • yayito83

    So OUT

  • lundibleu

OUT. I liked it on immediate glance, but:
    – the straps and the way they follow through the top and onto the skirt – it could have worked really nicely but they don’t line up and it’s making my eyes twitch.
    – the slit – I think it’s a design element too far, the skirt looks full enough to walk in without that, so why?
    – her hair – can’t put finger on why but I don’t like it.
She doesn’t really look happy to be wearing it either.

  • colleenjanel

My biggest issue with the dress is that I can’t figure out the neckline. In some photos it appears to be asymmetric. But I don’t know if that’s intentional or if it’s just because it’s leather and doesn’t want to play nicely.

It’s okay, but it doesn’t set me on fire. Marginal OUT.

  • conniemd

IN only because the fit on the bodice is pretty good given the stiff material.

  • Daisy Walker

Out. I like the bodice, but both her lips and her skirt need color. She also needs to not almost show everyone her good china. That slit is horrendous.

  • Jen P.

I love it – very Bondage Eleganza. It’s such a departure from her princess look that I can’t help but applaud. She does fierce really well.

  • cocohall

It’s a cool dress, but it isn’t quite right for the venue. It’s a little too much “sex on a stick” for the Oscars. I think her hair and makeup are stunning.

  • rkdgal

I am a sucker for this aesthetic, and I feel like it’s working on Kerry. Certainly better than many of her past outfits, so for me this is an IN.

  • Nicole

Out. The rest of the dress isn’t cool enough to compensate for that horrible neckline. Just why?

  • MzzPants

Complete IN! The fit is perfect. She chose leg over boob, instead of both. It’s not sheer, praise Oprah. The design is original, but not overworked. Makeup is flawless. Hair…meh. IN.

  • Kill the shoulder straps, and it would be a total IN for me. As it is, the proportions are just *weird* looking. Points for that FACE, though.

  • AbbaGurl

Hair and make-up in. Dress “out” for the Oscars. Were it the Grammy’s, well, that’s another story. Meanwhile, what’s with the Lea Michele poses? Girl, you’re better than that!

  • brooklynbull

2nd pic from the bottom? Any doubt that this is IN?
She has an amazing face … and she was pleasantly forthright about being sent in from TV land to juice up the diversity.

  • kittyvscupcake

Killer bodice with a let down skirt. And Kerry, leave that “nude/super pale pink lip” to the white girls. Rarely looks good on us browner skinned folks. Out.

  • Robert Sanchez

I don’t have a problem with the dress, it’s sleek and looks good, and she kept the jewelry to earrings so as not to compete. My only real quibble is with her hairstyle, which elongates her face too much. But I give the dress an “in.”

  • Pollynation

Not so sure about this one. The leather seems a bit stiff for the bodice and looks like it’s been accidentally creased between her breasts. Plus the fit on the boob on the right in the pics isn’t good. But, I like that it’s totally different from the oh-so-many frou frou and peekaboo dresses. Plus she’s lovely. So a slight IN.

  • BobStPaul

I think this is a definite in. It has a really cool and edgy look and one thing I really like is that it’s totally unexpected for her but yet she wears it so well. She looks great.

  • Pterodactyl111

    In

  • oneWEIRDword

IN! Gorgeous on her and outside the norm!

  • LeelaST

OUT-ish. Love everything about this head to toe except the straps. Make it strapless & for the love of fashion removed them from the hips & it’s perfect.

  • MissRiss65

If dented boobs are the in thing, then IN!

  • A_guy01

Why was she even there? I don’t get it?

  • boingboing

Out. It looks cheap. And the slit is too high.

  • ybbed

IN, its different, fits great, she’s beautiful.

  • I get what she’s going for, but the fit on the top does her no justice. It reminds me of the female deputies at work trying to make their shirts fit over Kevlar designed for men. Out.

  • NG

    IN – earrings
    OUT – everything else

For me, the dress is a bad idea badly executed. Bodice is too high, doesn’t flatter her bosom, squares off her figure, and seems slightly assymetrical for some reason. The stitching and construction details seem to be meant to show off her figure, but they somehow just disappear. A straight neckline was needed. And, if the design was meant to contrast hard and soft, the fabric of the skirt is not soft or floaty enough. Also, looks like something Oliva would wear and (I know I’m alone on this) I hate what Olivia wears.

That neutral face doesn’t compete with this rather boring dress.

    The hair is ridiculously casual.

  • lucasuk82

Out. I was on board until that shot of inner thigh.

  • Kaonashi

Remember when she was doing publicity for Django Unchained and how beautifully she was attired during that pole dance?

I do, too. This is an out. Nothing flatters, and the head is terrible.

  • Judih1

Out, don’t like the slit. there is enough going on above the waist where she didn’t need that. Also not liking the hair

  • Therese Bohn

I’m probably the only one, but I give this an In — I don’t think many women could pull this off and I just loved it on her. I love the leather embellishments and the earrings are gorgeous. I only wish the slit wasn’t that high.

  • N

OUT. The leather bodice and detailing are tacky, and she looks awkward and somewhat uncertain trying to work this edgier design. Basically, it’s not her dress and it’s not a very good or sophisticated one to begin with.

  • zelavie

Out. I can’t tell if the neckline is supposed to be asymmetrical – if it is, that’s fine, but BE it, don’t hint at it. If it’s not, it’s just kinda wonky. Either way, it’s too high and just… awkward. And DEAR GOD that slit is too high. Super fug dress. But her head is lovely.

  • LaSylphide

Out. I actually kind of like the dress, but it’s too Amazon Woman Goes To The Oscars for her petite size.

  • AnnaFalacksis

Please save us from that leg out pose!

  • Ali França Rasul

    OUT OUT OUT!

  • Ana Cedillo

OUT for sure. This is an awkward combination of leather, it is unflattering, and also when is the last time she was even in a movie? Why is she at the Oscars? ( yeah I know that could be said about a lot of people)

  • Mlle Golightly

Out – looks like a confused super hero wearing her cape as a train. I love her style but not this time.

  • Catherine

OUT. I do love me some black leather especially with stitching, but this just looks like an under-breastplate for a centurion. The hip swoops make no sense and the crotch-high slit reminds us all that it’s Ver-sayce.

  • Out. That slit is too damn high

  • unbornfawn

Out. Don’t like how high it is on her neck and it is wrong for the occasion.

  • Lauren

She always tries way too hard. So contrived.

  • Thom

IN. I like, not love, this dress: her head styling is right on for it, and I like the play of matte white with black leather shine. Maybe it’d be more subtle with a black skirt, but I don’t mind the white, and I like the bodice for how well contoured and sculpted it is.

  • IN! I don’t expect Warrior Queen from her and it’s a good look. I hate those shoes and the high-slit is too, too high for someone who needs to walk anywhere, but I love how her vinyl-look eyeliner echoes the leather bodice, I love how the bodice fits her and basically if DC are looking for a Hippolyta I think they should give her a call.

  • Tom Markiewicz

Like the dress, HATE the hair. My god that is a high slit… OUT.

  • sgac37

IN, with neckline concerns. Strapless might be better.

  • Baghag

In, but only because of her head. That dress looks like something an FIT student would make for their final garment.

  • MannahattaMamma

she looks hot and not in the new sense – in the old sense. can you imagine carrying all that leather (pleather? vinyl?) around all night? SWEAAAATTTTTY. Blergh.

  • IN. It’s a wonky dress, but her attitude is carrying the day. She’s making it work.

  • Jessica Peterson

Out. Hate the rounded neckline with straps. Kill the straps, remove the other, stranger leather straps woven into the skirt and bodice and this could work for me. I give her head an A+, though.

  • barbarienne

Put a sword in her hand and I’ll follow her into battle!

    IN.

  • KT

OUT!! It looks like she put a bulletproof vest on over her dress, for fear that there would be a shooting or something.

  • AutumnInNY

OUT. This is a People’s Choice or Grammy look but not Oscar appropriate.

  • JynxTheCat

not twee for once – but JESUS girl that SLIT.

  • E. D.

    In.

  • Natty

Would’ve been in if the neckline wasn’t so cumbersome. Make it a sweetheart neckline and it would’ve looked a lot better.

  • quiltrx

A weak IN. I don’t like the bust/neckline, it comes too high and is a weird shape.

  • out. the bottom half is all ready for her yearly exam at the gyn’s office, but the top is saying NO to the mammogram.

  • StarburstLady

It’s boring, the slit’s too high, and the bondage straps on the butt are freaking me out. OUT.

  • Freynika

Biker Cowgirl OUT. Maybe if the hip things weren’t so chunky and the neckline didn’t rise so high, I’d give it a pass. As-is, no way.

  • Lorelei_D

I really miss when you’d let us know how the voting went on the the previous “in or out”

  • PeaceBang

OUT. The idea is really cool but the execution is weird. Warrior goddesses should not have so many fit issues.
