We sat across from her at this show (they said casually, while checking their nails for flaws) and after we noted how incredibly beautiful she is – she’s got that Marilyn/Grace Kelly thing where light just seems to bend toward her –  we pitied her for having to sit in the front row in a sleeveless dress with a cutout. Not that the room was freezing, but almost all the attendees were comfortably coated, except for her. She must have left it backstage.

Anyway, we love the dress on her but we’d like it more without the cutout. Personal pref. It looks spectacular when paired with the coat, but it only tends to highlight the tummy patch all the more.

We have a vague sense that the shoe color is wrong, but we’ll leave that up to you guys to debate. If not this color/style, then what would you recommend?

That cutout is awful. it stumps her torso like crazy. And that stumpifying is only highlighted with the coat. Without the coat it’s not as bad, still awful, but not as bad.

    • Bridget Smith

It completely throws off the proportions of the dress. Without the cutout, though, this dress would be a little…churchy, I think? Great pattern, bland design, a little more mature than works for her. But I don’t know what the solution is. Rescue the fabric & start again?

      • Melani R

Make it two pieces. A bandeau top with a high-waisted skirt. Which is what this is trying to mimic and failing epically.

    • Tea Addict

It is! For a minute I got confused: Is that cleavage or her abs?!?

    • evave2

Also she is just bone behind the cutout so she doesn’t even look sexy. I don’t like where the cutout is. But I like the shape of the dress and I enjoy the print.

      • Melani R

I think she’s gorgeous. let’s not body shame.

        • evave2

I am saying the cutout is in an unattractive spot. “I” would certainly look awful I wore a cutout in that spot. I am not body shaming. Sometimes dresses make somebody look thick in the middle. Saying the garment highlights unfortunate areas of any woman’s body is not body shame. She is beautiful. This dress actually diminishes her beauty.

          • Melani R

“Also she is just bone behind the cutout”
Sounds like body shaming to me.

          • evave2

Where the cutout is locate is in an unfortunate place. You can put accent areas of a garment anyplace and this particular cutout I do not think would look good on anyone. It is Kors’ issue not Harris’ body.

    • livesarah

No, the cutout is worse than that. It makes it look like she’s got her head on backwards. WTF. She’s so beautiful she’s practically magical, but even she can’t pull THAT off!

      • evave2

Thanks for expressing what I meant better than I did. Melanie R believes I am denigrating Naomie Harris’ BODY which I am not. I think the cutout is in a place which I don’t think enhances anyone’s form.

  • Scimommy

She is absolutely gorgeous, but that sternum window is all wrong.

Shoe color, shoe color… Turquoise? Aquamarine?

    • Almost anything other than any shade of pink.

      • Jessica Freeman

Those are the exact color of all my Barbie shoes growing up. Definitely a no.

      • Kent Roby

        Those are Lisa Vander’s pumps.

        • SunDevilWitch

          Dying!

        • cocohall

LVP actually seems to think she “owns” pink, so Naomi is really playing with fire wearing them. 🙂

      • Sherrie

        turquoise and white herringbone

      • Monabel

        Baby-poo Bronze.

    • avoir_du_chien

I’m partial to cobalt blue myself.

A nice teal would work too, IMO.

      • BayTampaBay

        Butter Yellow?

    • 3boysful

I think a shoe that was strappy and had a little more interest would work better.

    • Fyolette

forest or hunter green imo, keep the texture

      • Scimommy

I like the idea of using a “nature color”, such as forest green, to go with the leaf motif on the dress.

    • lamamu

      Aubergine

    • smayper

I’m just drooling at all the great color ideas. From a girl raised to think about shoes as “either brown or black,” it’s so liberating!

  • Karen B

Blergh on that cut-out. Outside of a swimsuit (and that’s even a stretch), is there any occasion where this is a good idea/good look? I mean, like “if you go for a chest x-ray, you don’t have to change” type scenarios…

  • Erica

NO MORE CUTOUTS!!! (shaking fist at the sky in a hopeless effort to change our lot in life)

  • GemFemme

    Stupid sternum cutout!
Is metallic silver too obvious a choice for the shoe?

  • Sorry to see Naomie is back to feeling the need to show the world her sternum. Such a completely unflattering dress.

  • Anna

The cutout is especially vile, it really throws her proportions off. I think the coat actually highlights how awful that cutout is. I love the shoes, but with a different outfit.

In the summer (and without that cutout), I’d like this with a dark coral or an aqua pump. Her skin is just radiant, I’m surprised that she doesn’t have some kind of luxury skincare or makeup contract of her own. I would buy whatever she endorses.

    • 3boysful

I agree–I was surprised how much cuter the dress was w/o the coat. It looks like a (pretty) paper bag in that one shot. I hate the sternum window on principle but like how it mimics the neckline in reverse.

  • Cutouts like that seem to me to belong pool side, or in hot weather like a sun dress. For February it just looks too casual.

  • BendinIntheWind

This latest batch of cutouts that hit somewhere oddly between the waist/sternum bears way too much resemblance (for me) to a child’s two-piece bathing suit. Little-girl bikinis are the creepiest thing ever, and these kind of cutouts just remind me so much of the same proportions. They’re not cutting out areas to be “sexy” or enhance the natural curves of the wearer, they’re just exposing triangles of skin in an awkward spot that just creates a weirdly juvenile look of flat-chestedness.

  • Bland Gland

That cutout is giving her the weirdest sternum cleavage. WHY, DUCHESS KORS. WHY DO THIS TO NAOMIE HARRIS.

  • SophiaPehawkins

Naomie Harris has never met a sternum cutout she didn’t like.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Without any bust shaping, it looks like her back / spine… awful!!

  • Lily

    Fill in the cut-out.
    Keep the shoes.
Throw in some jewelry and a brighter lip for balance.
    Voila!

  • Gatto Nero

    Better without the ab window.
    Cobalt blue shoe.

  • Lilah

The cutout throws off the proportions.

  • I’m a fan of wearing a coat like a coat rather than a cape. I’m just saying…there are these cool holes for your arms to go into. It’s quite smart.

  • Anglow

Is that Miss Moneypenny? Love her!

    • Kaonashi

      Yes it is!

  • steph

The cutout and the style of the dress scream summer to me and not Pre-Fall.
The color of the shoes is fine but a sandal would be better than a heavy pump.

  • Jessica Freeman

That is the most awkward placement of a cut out. And that’s saying a lot for this site.

  • zellamaybe

I will never like that style of cutout. If even a stunning woman with a slender frame can’t pull if off, no one can. I actually love the shoes with it, though.

  • TRSTL

That awkward cutout ruins a perfectly lovely dress…….

  • mjude

over the cutout. don’t. get. it.

  • schadenfreudelicious

    100% too much sternum….

  • Wink

Damn you, cutouts. Damn you to hell!

  • happygolucky7

I mean, she’s beautiful. She has a beautiful torso. She wears clothes beautifully. She’s poised and naturally chic. It’s not that she can’t get away with it, as much as should she? Why? Especially this time of the year. Torso cutouts are never right, but they are especially wrong in February in New York, and even wronger for the gorgeous Naomie Harris, when they spoil an otherwise very pretty outfit.

  • Hoffenreffer

LOVE THE SHOES W THE DRESS AND ESPECIALLY W THE DEESS AND COAT!

  • I am very fond of black/white/turquoise as a combo. I’m also thanking the baby Jesus that she did not attempt to match shoe color and the lipstick color. And I’ll take the coat when she’s done.

  • It’s a very strangely positioned cutout. With the coat on, it took me a minute to figure out which body part it was framing.

    • VCR1

Me too! It looked too low to be at her collar bone but too high for her stomach. It was making her body look weirdly out of proportion

  • Lilithcat

That cutout ruins the dress. Love the coat, though.

  • Kent Roby

That cutout would only look okay with the coat buttoned up over it.

  • Sly

That cutout is one that was pioneered by Geoffrey Beene, right at the Solar Plexus, Infact Mr. Beene loved cutouts himself. So cutouts are an american thing (One could say an American designer tradition), always will be. She looks gorgeous, the fit is spectacular, looks tailored on to her body, And that coat! That coat looks spectacular! Very Tailored, I love the two fabrics used in it.

  • VCR1

The cutout is at such a weird spot. I couldn’t figure it out when she had the coat on. As for the shoes, maybe red sandals?

    • schadenfreudelicious

exactly, I couldn’t figure out what body part I was looking at..

  • Poeta Paz

With the coat the cutout seems to be by her breast, which makes it look really weird.

  • stellavision

That is just not a flattering bodice. Bad Duchess! No biscuit!

  • Diane

The cutout is horrible. The placement is just doing weird things on her. But I like the shoe color, and she is very gorgeous.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

    LOVE her hair.

  • KTBSN

The dress would be perfection on her if not for that horrid cut out.

  • Eric Stott

    That boob window is ridiculous

  • kimmeister

I take no issue with the shoe color, although I think a variety of other bright colors would also work. I hate the cutout with the passion of a thousand fiery suns.

  • WashieWash

I hate those cutout dresses. There, I said it.

  • Starts with K

    Hate hate hate the cutout
Love love love the shoe color. (I want her lips to match, though)

  • MilaXX

I have a bit of a crush on her. The only change I would have made would be to lose the cut out. I like this shoe paired with the look.

  • DrMomLovesLife

What the hell is going on with that tummy patch? Make it go away.

    The rest is great.

  • Abbey Rogue

The sternum window would work better on someone bustier. However, I think she looks great; I love the shoes. I just wish she had on lipstick.

  • H3ff

That cutout is the first thing you see. Super distracting.
Her face, however, is flawless (and it isn’t always).

I’d go with a dark blue pump.

  • Imasewsure

It’s an adorable dress worn backwards… oh well…

  • BlackCatBitch

That coat is subtle yet striking !

  • marlie

I’d prefer the dress without the cutout, but I don’t hate it. It’s her “thing.” The coat is GORGE. And I’m indifferent about the shoes. SHE is as lovely as usual.

  • Artsygrl69

I like the coat by itself. I like the dress by itself but for some reason not together. It’s the shoes that mess it up for me. I don’t see that color anywhere else, not in jewelry. If there was maybe a ring in that color then maybe I’d be more accepting of the color.

  • The cutout is distracting in a bad way, the coat is distracting in a good way. Mmm… so pretty.

  • NG

With the coat, there’s something dramatic about the cutout as part of a covered up look. Without the coat, the dress looks strange. Maybe with a higher neckline and/or sleeves? IDK.

  • kerryev

The definition of “fresh face,” huh? Gorgeous.

  • Stuart Miller

Cutout., sleeveless dress with a coat–contradiction in terms. Shoe color: black would of course be safe but maybe a very dark green provided she had some jewelry or a purse to complement? And I swear to God: the dress pattern is the same dinnerware pattern I bought at Sears in 1972. I’m not making this up!

  • SherryN

I agree no cutout. And I love the coat, but with the coat, the cutout seems to stand outmode to me. For the shoes, I really think red or yellow would’ve been a better choice but at least the fuchsia is a nice pop of color and she didn’t go with basic black like some others definitely would have.

  • Kaonashi

No cutout, that thing is horrible. I would also wear a chic pair of ankle boots. And that coat is luscious.

  • Pollynation

I’m a fan of the shoes; the dress is okay; Naomi is splendid. The last pic is adorable.

  • Sarah Walsh

I AM SO SICK OF SEEING WOMEN’S STERNUMS. Or is it sterna? Either way, that is not an interesting swathe of skin. The curve of a woman’s back is sexy, so I could see a cutout there, which makes me just think everyone is putting their dresses on backwards and then going “I meant to do that.”

  • GillianHolroyd

The dress needed *something* to make it less ordinary but the placement of the cut out is wrong and confusing when she’s wearing the coat. LOVE the shoes with this look. Her makeup is sublime. TLo envy.

  • KittieLynnNYC

The cutout spoils what would otherwise be a lovely dress.
Gotta admit-I prefer her short “28 Days Later” hair too. She wore it so very well!

  • sgac37

The shoes aren’t bad, but they’re not good either. They’re doing the pop of color thing, but they’re popping away all by themselves down at her feet. I would do a nice black shoe with just a bit of interest to it, and bring the hot pink further up with some bangles and earrings, or a pink-trimmed clutch.

  • eclare

The placement of the cutout is strange and unflattering.

  • DesertDweller79

Can we talk about this now apparent trend of celebs not actually wearing their coat? Why are they all walking around with the coat hanging over their shoulders? Put your arms through the sleeves, you idiots! If you need a coat, that means it’s cold! You all look ridiculous wearing it like that!

  • A_guy01

She does have a lovely sternum (in so far as one can say that about someone’s sternum).
