Lady Gaga Sings the National Anthem at Super Bowl 50 in Gucci

Posted on February 08, 2016

Lady Gaga sings the National Anthem at Super Bowl 50 at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

To the surprise of all those people who still think she wears meat dresses, Steffi came out and blew the crowd away with her rendition of the National Anthem. To the surprise of these two bitches, we loved her outfit.

No, really. Miss Lady slayed it on all fronts, from talent to style. Sure, she could have come out in a gown and tried to be high-falutin’ about it, or she could have come out in something sporty and casual and tried to be “just folks” about it, but instead, she did what we would consider the smartest thing: she had fun with it while still giving the patriotic-minded a little bit of the ol’ red, white and blue. That she interpreted it as red glitter eyeshadow, a red glitter pantsuit, blue nails and mismatched shoes only means she found a way to straddle all these worlds – sports, patriotism, respectability and a sense of playfulness – while still managing to be every inch Lady Gaga. Sure, her wig game was dicey and the pants don’t fit all that well, but she probably wouldn’t be Gaga if she didn’t half-ass her costume game just a tiny bit. It’s kind of her thing.

  • I love the idea of a red lurex suit, but the “with flared pants” is not my thing. Those shoes are fab.

    • Jessica Freeman

Oh a nice skinny pant would have been a much better call.

      • So much better!

      • fursa_saida

I think a skinny pant would have created a serious problem with the shoes in terms of proportions. Maybe more of a straight leg or a bootcut instead of the big bells?

        • Jessica Freeman

Lada Gaga loves a huge pair of clod hoppers. I don’t think a really tapered pair of skinny pants would work, but just a straight leg skinny would have.

    • Little_Olive

I think if you want to go the flare way, the fabric cannot be that stiff*. A little more drape and movement would have come a long way.

*Except that it cannot be satin either. No satin pants have been documented to work in the history of mankind.

      • I would offer the Abba blue satin outfits from Honey Honey, but that’ll get us down an off-topic rabbit hole!

  • Lisalemann

She absolutely killed it on the vocal front – and I liked the over the top patriotism of the outfit.

    • She did pretty well, but she was definitely pitchy. Mostly good though. I was super impressed with the outfit. TLo’s right, it really slays. Hate the shoes personally but where else are they appropriate if not here? I kind of want to get versions of this suit in different sparkly colours.

      • Nancy Arseneault-Heald

I did not hear the pitchiness, and I was focused in looking for it. I think she was trying to find a way to put her own spin on it, as opposed to belting it out Whitney-style. That resulted in a lot of variability in the performance. Let’s face it, it is an old song – only so many ways you can sing it.

        • tallgirl1204

I actually loved how she started quiet and recognized that she was asking a question: oh say, can you see? Gave me a little chill. I actually was stunned to hear her display some serious vocal ability. I have to admit I’ve always put her in the Madonna camp, vocally, and that was wrong of me.

          • Donna Tabor

You should seek out a YouTube of her first TV special, which shows off her classical chops. She originally tried to go that way in her career and got nowhere until she went the whackadoo/pop way. But she’s a serious musician.

          • frau_doctor

Didn’t she go to Juilliard at some point? She can knock any song out of the park conventionally if she chooses to do so.

        • frau_doctor

I heard a deliberate, direct homage to Whitney’s version in parts of it. No one who was with me at the time agreed, but apparently this was her intention. Much of the variability is due to that – and this is Gaga, not Whitney or anyone else, so for me, the intelligence of the performance was what stood out and any weirdness was fine by me.

          • Daniel

I heard it too! The embellishment on the “free”? There was a video at 6ish asking celebrities about their favorite superbowl moments and Gaga said the Whitney anthem, so I was watching for a reference.

      • Lisalemann

Completely disagree on the pitchy part. She definitely did her own interpretation – but there wasn’t a bum note anywhere Iin it. And she had the balls to sing it live – which most Super Bowl national anthem singers do not do – so brava to her – it was gutsy and glorious .

        • I mean, I’m not really invested in it either way, but she was definitely pitchy in spots. I just watched it again and she’s also really nasal which I didn’t notice before but it might just be how her voice has changed. There’s a whole phrase where she’s just under the notes instead of above them. She recovered well though and it was overall a great performance. I can’t remember the anthem getting that much showmanship in a while. Also, isn’t the US national anthem a notoriously difficult song to sing? I think she acquitted herself very well considering. Plus she looked great doing it. 🙂

tl;dr: The fact that (I think) she was pitchy does not make it less a great a performance.

  • OffToSeeHim

OMG, that IS a wig! Good spotting! I didn’t notice last night at all. I thought she did a great job, and that she looked beautiful – I even loved her eye shadow!

    • Kim Elmore

Me too!! (I think we both need to tag this w #ofcourse 😉

    • dmichaelkny

had no clue it was a wig either!

    • Donna Tabor

I think most of the time you’re safe assuming whatever is on her head is some kind of wig.

  • The shoes are killer.

  • Karen B

She was a fine cross between Jennifer Lawrence on the Mockingjay Pt2 poster and Effie Trinket in the first Hunger Games movie.

    • Lily

I saw lots of tweets about Effie last night while she was singing.

    • d4divine

…with a dab of Elton John

    • solstice1119

I think she is morphing into christina aguilera…

  • Luca

    the wig is horrible though.

  • BaltimoreAubrey

I loved it. Pure camp. As a friend pointed out, she looked like the most fabulous real estate agent in Branson. Total compliment.

  • sarcasmfont

The matching eyeshadow and suit color were a bit much, and we mere mortals could never get away with that red glitter look, but she looked fantastic and just KILLED the vocals! I feel like she totally got that this is a family-friendly event watched all over the world, and she dressed appropriately for the occasion and the audience, with just a sprinkle of Gaga thrown in to keep it interesting.

    • Amber J

I’d look like a weird clown if I tried that red glitter eyeshadow. I love it on her, though.

  • Pennymac

She knocked it WAY out of the park, on all fronts.
Also, I am delighted to see that she has bedazzled in-ear monitors!

    • ktr33

      just noticed that, too. Kller!

    • Sanglots longs

I loved the sparkly ear pieces, not so much the sparkly eyelids. I’m probably splitting hairs, though, and otherwise I thought she was fantastic in every way.

  • Jessica Freeman

Her whole head was a big ol no for me. Loved the pant suit. Not a fan of the shoes.

  • Kit S.

Her wigs remain janky, but I love that the hair is a bit of a play on big, political helmet hair. Fits the patriotic camp.

  • yayito83

    She was amazing!!!

  • OrangeChia

Loved the suit and jewelry, and much to my surprise, didn’t hate her hair.

The pink eye (conjunctivitis) eye make up has got to stop, no matter who the wearer. It simply doesn’t look good on anyone.

  • SophiaPehawkins

Eh. It didn’t really work for me, especially the red eyeshadow. Also her face looks weird. Did she have something done?

    • shirab

Looked to me like a ton of contouring, especially around her nose.

    • makeityourself

  • DeniseSchipani

Son #1: WHAT is on her eyes??! Son #2: How does she stand in those shoes? Me: Shut up so I can hear the notes. SHE WAS AMAZING.

  • bobbityboo

She is so much more enjoyable when she is 100% Gaga, janky wig and all. Love her voice/talent/her.

  • Rhonda Shore

It needed to be exactly how she played it to show up on that huge field. And i think we’ve all learned from her Tony Bennett duet album and her Sound of Music tribute that the lady can really sing!

  • imperfectlaura

I was a big fan of everything (performance, costume, etc) except for the hand gestures she made during the performance. It was a bit distracting IMO.

  • Kelly

My eyes water in sympathy every time I see glitter eye shadow — I can’t help but imagine the pain if any of it got in your eyes. Lady G’s presentation here is a good example of when the whole is WAY more effective than its parts. Taken individually, there are problems — the suit doesn’t fit well, the wig looks like it has lard smeared on it — but altogether, look and performance, she _________ (insert positive sports metaphor here: knocked it out of the park, soared through the goal posts, slam-dunked it, etc.)

  • TheScobinator

    She Ra meets Hilary Clinton.

  • MilaXX

She got her Effie Trinket on and slayed!

  • berkeleyfarm

I heard the game on the radio so didn’t see this till later. Outfit was great. I also loved her rendition – she totally slayed on it – so I actually probably wouldn’t have cared if she looked a fright.

  • steph

Nobody will ever doubt her talent after this.
    She Killed it.

    • Saturnine

Not that I doubt she’s going to give a good performance, but I always find my self surprised by just *how* good she is. I hrumphed when she was slated to do the Julie Andrews tribute, and then she was great. I’m grumbling about the David Bowie tribute, but she’s likely to make me eat my hat.

  • mandalala

I cannot stand it that people still bring up the meat dress. She has very clearly moved on from that persona/style. She did a great job with the anthem, thank goodness because I really didn’t want to hear haters bringing up the meat dress. That said, the pants on the suit were super ill-fitting.

    • Saturnine

I think the meat dress is part of the uh, total Gaga package though. You can’t have the 2016 Super Bowl National Anthem Gaga without the 2010 MTV Awards Meat Dress Gaga.

      • frau_doctor

Meat dress at the time was an homage to a persecuted Chinese artist who had once made “Meat Suit.” It wasn’t a joke piece at all. I loved that about her.

  • Belle239

She was terrific. And, I must say she sang the song without all the weird notes all over the place and pretty straightforward but with nice phrasing. Job well done! She looked great and I didn’t even mind the eye shadow.

  • In_Stitches

I can’t sign off on the Elvira hair and the glitter lids, but who cares when she delivers such a performance. It was beautiful.

  • Blackcatbitch

    Those platforms

  • Latin Buddy

No! Just like there is a “know your venue” standard of dress, there is a “know your venue” standard of singing. Her rendition was inappropriate for a sporting event. What the hell was up with her affected Broadway persona?!

    • EveEve

Wow, gotta disagree. IMO her rendition was Superbowl perfection. Not too Marine Corp soloist, not too Mariah Carey.

    • Ruby_Red

I thought it was rather wonderful. I actually listened to the lyrics – IS the banner still waving? I found it an amazingly fine rendition.

    • StrictTime

I agree with you. It was very “Me Me Me”. I didn’t notice, but did the announcer say something about “honoring America with the singing of our national anthem”? I think the performance went over the line into “honoring how magnificent I am while I sing this song”.

    • tallgirl1204

Oh, I so disagree (but respect your opinion). She gave life to an old chestnut, and brought it up to date– without overpowering it with ridiculous vocal pyrotechnics and belting. Yes, she changed a note or two, but it was all perfectly easy to sing along to despite that. I am no particular fan of the national anthem, and I sat and listened to it attentively– and heard the words in a way I had not before. That does not happen to me often, and I have to give respect for that. (And let me stipulate: I am also no particular fan of Gaga. This is all based on the moment and the performance.) Again, reasonable people may disagree.

  • lisaepc

My only complaint is that the hair leans a little too close to a Heatmeiser vibe

    • Saturnine

  • Tavvi

she always have problem with wigs, this one gives her Croydon facelift. She needs to consult Beyonce, her wigs always look like they grow straight from her own scalp

  • imspinningaround

I love the suit, but I wish she had worn an American designer to sing the national anthem at the signature American sporting event.

  • Spreecord

She’s the most patriotic drag queen in Washington.

  • KimThore

I loved the look from head to toe…she nailed it with red glitter painted nail.

  • GemFemme

Now I want a red glitter suit!

Dicey fit on those pants and super sketchy wig…… But, she nailed it and was fabulous!

  • siriuslover

She wore the perfect outfit for a humongous stadium like that. Everyone in the nosebleeds seats would see her as well. I think she killed it.

  • Lily

Would have loved to see a different cut pant on her, and would have loved it if she had toned down the runs a bit at the end (I’m a traditionalist, I suppose), but overall, I was very pleasantly surprised and loved the touch of the single piano for accompanyment.

    • Lauren

That’s funny because, given the way singing competitions have made every note in every song an opportunity for a Mariah Carey-esque climactic finale, I thought Gaga’s runs were tasteful and restrained.

      • Lily

They were, certainly, in comparison. Singing competitions have ruined the National Anthem.

  • shopgirl716

She KILLED it. I’m now a full blown fan.

  • PeaceBang

I feel kind of like a smug grandma because I have steadfastly loved + supported Miss G throughout the entire trajectory of her career, even when everyone was trashing her for losing her tang. I said, “No, no, she’s just morphing, she’s going to find her way to a more legit thing, and it will still be crazy and fun and she can sing like mad, just wait.” Well. There she is. It happened just as I foretold.

  • cocohall

I skipped the Super Bowl and saw Hail Caesar instead, but my husband said she did a great job on the singing. No surprise – the lady has pipes. But he failed to provide commentary on her clothes. So here I am to get the TLo Down, so to speak, and to my surprise I find a post about a Jenny McCarthy look-a-like. WHAT IS HAPPENING? Is anyone else seeing this? One Jenny McCarthy is already bordering on too much Jenny McCarthy.

Regardless, this is a smart look for her – I can live with the wig, but the fit on the crotch is worrisome. And can I get an Amen that no one needs to be worried about the crotch of her pants especially singing live on TV for the biggest sporting event of the year?

  • ktr33

One of the most unsingable songs in the English language and this may be the best performance of it I’ve ever heard. The whole thing, top (weird wig) to bottom (platform red, white, and blue mismatching shoes) + The Voice: top that, future Star-Spangled-Banner-singing bitches.

  • StrictTime

She looked great, and her voice was really good, but I’m firmly in the camp of singing the national anthem in a way that doesn’t inhibit the crowd’s ability to sing along. I enjoy singing the NA in a crowd before a sporting event (one of they very few times I feel patriotic), but find I just can’t unless it’s at a high school football game with a marching band playing the tune exactly as written.

  • Radish

I loved her look and she clearly has so much talent. It did feel like more of a Lady Gaga performance than the National Anthem before a football game, however.

  • stellavision

This is what used to drive me crazy about Gaga — the knowledge that there was a VERY GOOD SINGER making crap like “Paparazzi” and “Bad Romance” and being better known for wearing meat and latex than for what she could do with her voice and piano skills.

    Loved her last night.

  • abishagijh

Her eyeshadow made my eyelids itch in sympathy.

  • lynnlee

I didn’t notice the Stars and Stripes shoes last night. They’re perfect! She looks like a 70’s country singer. I love everything about this outfit.

  • VCR1

Loved her shoes and nails but not the pantsuit so much. I didn’t love the fit of it even though I admit it was eye catching on tv. I think a sleeker suit that showed off the shoes better would’ve looked great.
Her wig really looked bad, it was making her look like a mannequin. She has a fantastic voice though!

  • d4divine

A stovepipe cut would have been better than a flare. Imo

  • mjude

bowing down. loved her performance & adore her look.

  • SophieCollier

That is some Dolly Parton realness there. In fact, at a glance at the thumbnail I thought it might be.

  • picarica

Oh look at her! ALL kinds of candy an I love candy!!

  • Michelle

    Flared leg lurex tuxedo?
My Sporty Spice Doll did this look in the 90s.

  • 3gardenias

BRAVO TLo!!! Right ON! I so agree.

  • Liv Rancourt

She looked fantastic and she sounded better – like Barbra Streisand & Whitney Houston had a red glitter love child.

  • kittyvscupcake

Just watched performance on Youtube. Great look, great voice and style. I was really moved by her rendition…It’s like you can tell she has the bomb voice under all those pop songs, but this was totally unadulterated Lady Gaga fierceness!

  • Deb Oswald

Her singing was just awesome. LOVELY voice, respectful yet artistic….. One of the nicest ones I have ever heard.

  • Kim Kane

Elton would have been jealous of her shoe game. She rocked it out of the park!

  • mmebam

I was cool with her hair until she turned around.

  • Imasewsure

This was awesome from tonsils warbling to shiny glitter fabric everywhere and I was living for the eye makeup

  • Sarrinsor

That 50’s diner chair fabric almost makes me think it was Gaga making a sly commentary about “traditional American values” while still being patriotic as hell in her own way.

  • RedRaven617

I love the bedazzled ear pieces.

  • largishbearishAtlish

Izombie hair (the tv show) I just can’t unsee it. sigh (maybe its a promo?)

  • fromanotherplanet

What a jacked up lace front wig. I can’t. Also, the makeup is atrocious and the suit…Jesus! I am sorry but you cannot make excuses for this mess.

  • Myra Amler

Was there to hear her. She was brilliant.

    • DuBey2

What a treat that must have been to hear/see her live.

      • Myra Amler

It was! I wish she had performed at halftime. Coldplay was a bit of a snooze fest.

  • A_guy01

    Courtney Act Drag! Loved it.

  • 6cats

She looks like Elton John in drag.

  • somebody blonde

She looks like she’s playing the female version of the Damn Yankees devil. Once I saw it, I couldn’t unsee it.

  • D Breeze

From what I was seeing, I said it looked like Hugh Hefner pajamas with Spice Girl shoes. She did sound good and the red, white, blue aesthetic was cute.

  • Marjean Fieldhouse

performance was brilliant, but the hair was Dixie Chicks 2002

  • Kaonashi

    That lacefront. Guuurrrlll….

I liked her outfit, it was fun.

  • Mona_Visa

Girl can siiiiiiiiiiing! Such a difficult song, but the pro’s make it look easy.

And I love her makeup. LOVE. All eyes, muted lips, perfection. A lesser being would have been tempted to wear red lipstick and that would be wrong.

  • KittieLynnNYC

Serving up some true Dolly Parton-esque realness with the suit. The matching eye shadow, however, was both unnecessary and horrifying.

  • TigerLaverada

I thought she crushed it on every level. Kudos.

  • LinXGUA

My mom said “I didn’t recognize her because she wasn’t in costume”

  • DuBey2

I loved everything. This was a SBO (Super Bowl Only) look – the whole look. And for some reason, (I usually hate glitter on clothes & especially on faces), I was spell-bound by her red glitter eyelids that magically didn’t seem tacky on her. In fact, they made me love the pantsuit more than I would’ve. Also, in that setting, to be seen from the farthest seats, I thought the flared/belled pants were perfect & I particularly liked the way they only showed a tiny peek of the ever-present platform shooves.

  • Simply Amour

So when did she do that symbolic goat hand sign? Was it before, during or after her singing? Didn’t see it in the video…

  • spirit52

    liked her lookI
