IN or OUT: Diane Kruger in Prada at the amfAR New York Gala 2016

Posted on February 11, 2016

Diane Kruger attends the amfAR New York Gala 2016 at the Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.

Kittens, a wave of ambivalence has just washed over us.

We feel nothing. And that’s weird, because we love Prada more often than not; even when it gets weird. This is pretty enough, but the color – on a pale, blue-eyed blonde – strikes us a bit expected. And we love the way Miuccia overdoes the trim on her designs, but this dress is veering dangerously close to “windchime” territory, with all the gewgaws and foofaraw hanging off it. On the other hand, the pleats are a nice detail. We don’t hate it, but with everything going on here, we’d think we’d be able to work up something more than “meh.” Is it a “not her dress” situation? Put more directly, because you know we’re all about being direct ’round these parts:

Too many whosits and whatsits galore… Out

    • you want thingamabobs? she’s got twenty

      • JaniceB

But who cares? No big deal… please no more!

    • ChiKat67

The feathery things are a bridge too far. Beautiful color on her though.

  • Anna

Johnny Depp/Captain Jack Sparrow collaborates on gowns for Prada.

  • Cathy S

I like it until I saw the back. Yeah, there’s a lot of stuff hanging on the front, but it would have been fine if the back hadn’t been even busier than the front.

  • Jenn

OUT. It’s just too much – I think had some of the frippery been left off, it would work though. I just really hate that apron bodice Prada loves to do. Diane can pull it off but it’s not going to flatter 99.9% of the population.

    • Warmheartedgirl_Seattle

      Agree 100%. Out.

    • Kathie

I hate the apron bodice more than the frippery and thingamabobs.

  • Jamie

In. She has enough gravitas and fashion bonafides to pull it off. I think the frippery is actually well balanced.

    Hate her hair though.

  • the mcdonald’s i worked at in 1989 was decorated in peach and the color of this dress. ouuuuuut.

  • Apocalipstick Now Redux

Put this on Padma Lakshmi and it sings. On Diane? So out.

    • Bernd

My first thought was Nicole Kidman. IN for me, btw.

  • boweryboy

    OUT. It’s grossly over embellished.

    • JLou

OUT. She has tarantulas on her shoulders!

    • livesarah

It’s classic Prada. OUT. I’m sure I could get behind over-embellishment if it wasn’t all so ostentatiously hideous.

      • boweryboy

Sometimes Prada is brilliant, but lately Prada has been nothing but ostentatiously hideous.

  • Gatita

Like it, don’t love it. Small in.

  • Lily

From the waist up in the front, it’s lovely and classical looking. The rest is a Hobby Lobby remnants sale.

    • Judih1

  • Beth Burleson Swartz

I love that shade of blue, but it looks to “spidery” to me. If I wore that, I would feel like things were crawling on me.

    • Sanglots longs

Indeed. This dress gives me the creeps. Just looking at it makes me a little arachnaphobic.

  • Sherrie

IN! Great color on her, and yes, it is busy, but she can pull it off.

  • GregoireNYC

I don’t like spiders. I DON’T LIKE SPIDERS. WHY DOES SHE HAVE SPIDERS ON HER? *breathes into paper bag*

    • smayper

you beat me to it! I’m not even scared of spiders, and the neck gave me the creepy-crawlies.

  • michelle.

OUT. The feathers/things are like spiders and noooope to that.

  • ashtangajunkie

Out because I love it from the waist down but I really hate the spidery bits at the shoulders and the back is too much.

  • chica63

I would like it more if it were just the back bling or just the other trim situation going on….but not both.

  • N

The trim is a bit silly and overdone, but Diane is pulling it off thanks to her poise, grace, and polished presentation. She manages to look elegantly interesting as opposed to silly and costumey.

    • I gotta agree. I think this is a perfect example of the wearer selling the dress.

  • lipstickdiva

OUT. It looks like there are spiders crawling down the sides of her dress.

  • Flavia Pantoja

I’m going on a limb here and just admit that I like it a lot. I don’t love it, but sure like it. My only problem here is the somewhat sloppy hair.

  • librarygrrl64

OUT – she’s being attacked by giant spiders! RUN, DIANE RUUUUUUN!!!!!

  • KimThore

It looks like it started out as a fiber bird feeder and then someone suggested satin-y material and for a person to wear …OUT

  • somebody blonde

Out. There’s too much crap on the back.

  • Blackcatbitch

IN! She looks like an exotic bird deep from the Audubon collection, and not in a bad way. Far from the crazy Johnny Depp uncle this bird might be related to. That color is flawless, subtle yet striking. The rib cage poking out is a little irksome tho… Poor bird.

  • ANWrootbeers

That one side view, where you get a really good look at the pleats, is just lovely. But the dress isn’t working from any other angle to me. So I suppose it’s a reluctant OUT for me.

  • Marceline

Out. The color’s nice and so are the pleats but I find it too busy.

  • Gatto Nero

    But a great kitty playground.

    • TFinn734

That was my very first thought. How did she make it out of the house unscathed?

  • Suzannah Gordon-Luchins

    spiders on her shoulders

  • Aunt Kiki

IN! A very solid like, though not a love.

  • Janet B

I’m sure the cat will love playing with the stuff on her back: Out.

I like the front, although the blue is a bit too cool for my taste, it seems to suit her.

  • B_C_J

The dress would have been better without the back ornamentation but it fits well & the detailing along the length is interesting. In

  • Tanya Wade

Charlotte’s Web Realness. Wilbur and Templeton say “out!”

  • Belle239

Out. Love the pleats. I think the dress is just too bland for her type of beauty and it’s bringing her down to “meh, nothin’ special’.

  • shopgirl716

Seems like the gewgaws on her back would break off the minute she sat in a real chair. My cats would have a field day with those feathers.

  • Chickadeep

The paillette gewgaws on the back and the side pleating edge this into “Out” territory for me. Oddly enough, I cannot hate on the black feathery bits, though I question the crystal beading detail–I’m thinking the feather bits would look much better next to plain black trim. Anyhoo, I generally like her style and she gets points for fit, color, and pushing the envelope ever so slightly, but it didn’t *quite8 work here.

  • alocin

In. Super-in if you squint and mentally erase the feathers.

  • Emily Giovanni

Out. The long black hair feather things ruin it.

  • crash1212

OUT. I was loving it…until she turned around. GAH! The back is a gewgaw too far.

  • BayTampaBay

OUT!!! Too much going on….loose the feathers and maybe there is hope.

  • Luca

I’m sorry, but I cannot not see two freaking big mosquitoes at her shoulders *shudder*
    Definitely an out.

  • jen

Out. All that damn frippery ruined a beautiful dress.

  • barbarienne

    A lukewarm in.

It’s a weird dress, but I think she’s elevating it. It fits her perfectly, especially that tricky bustline. On another lady, this much frippery would be wearing her, but Ms. Kruger is in control here.

  • ojosazules

It’s like this dress ended up with another dress’s embellishments. They don’t go somehow. Out.

  • duchessb

I don’t mean to alarm you, Diane, but there are a couple of ginormous spiders on your shoulders. Oh, part of the dress you say? Never mind, carry on…

  • AndieJay

Out. I like the dress and I like Diane Kruger, but this is the wrong dress on the wrong woman. Diane’s style sense is more intellectual than this dress. It would look equally bad on Tilda Swinton. It would look awesome on Penelope Cruz or Nicole Kidman or maybe even Heidi Klum. IMO, obvs.

  • In_Stitches

Too many lovely ideas. A simple blue gown with the back detail? Lovely. A simple blue gown with just the neck detail in the front? Lovely. A simple blue gown with the pleating and feathers? Lovely. All of that together? Too much. OUT.

  • Imasewsure

Out… eyelashes and giant sequins just don’t cut it

  • mjude

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

In! I like it, embellishments and all.

T-Lo, may I ask, do you no longer report the results of the “In or Out”s? I don’t recall seeing any results in a long time.

  • Lilyana_F

The dress, minus the feathery stuff and the silly trinkets, hanging on the back, is pretty great. I love the pleats.

  • MarissaLG

It’s busy, sure, but I think it’s gorgeous. Total IN for me.

  • StarburstLady

The back of that thing reminds me of some kind of microorganism. A paramecium, I think. OUT, OUT to the cleansing fires.

  • teensmom99

IN–not for everyone but Diane looks amazing and makes it work.

  • funkydonut

IN. I think she looks gorgeous. I would like it better if the frippery were only in the back and the black fringe up front, near her face, had been edited out. But her head looks perfect and if fits her beautifully.

  • Stuart Miller

OUT. Pale blue is one of those problematic colors that can look washed out–that’s what I see. When it comes to using maribou trim, I say go all the way or don’t bother–the amount here is too skimpy to have much of an impact. And “wind chimes” is an apt description of all that trim. But I agree: the pleats are the best part.

  • schadenfreudelicious

    Needs more Pacey 🙁

  • Capt. Renault

IN, but mainly because it has me singing “Baubles, bangles, hear how they jing-jing-a-ling-a-ling…”

  • tereliz

Imma give her a small in. The back needs some trimming with the eyebrow scissors. I think effortless cool goes out the window when you’re wearing something that looks like it’s going to hurt to sit down in.

  • Lilithcat

If your black feather boa sheds, don’t hang it next to your pale blue dress.

  • happygolucky7

In. She’s making it work, the color brings out her eyes and the pleats are lovely. Let’s not talk too much about the fringe: it might wake up and crawl up her arm.

  • jilly_d

OUT on a count of excessive trim and ribcage overexposure. Five yard penalty.

  • kbeech

Can we get Zoe Saldana in here to try it on? Paging Zoe…

  • 3boysful

What is that silver trim?? It looks like the female part of the little hook you find at the top of a zipper on a skirt? I like the silhouette, color and pleats. Tone down the trim and we have something.

  • Out. It’s a Cher Horowitz pencil bag.

  • Kent Roby

    That dress is totally flocked.

  • Beto

There’s too much on this kinda simple and beautiful dress. And I’m speaking about the feathers, it competes with the busyness of the back. Or the opposite. Out.

  • Tatiana Luján

This dress is simply ridiculously embellished. What a shame, because it could have been classically elegant and pretty.
A good dress overtaken by Wendy Pepper

  • Shannyn Marie

Project Runway Jo Ann fabric challenge winning dress.

  • Pennymac

Question: How many trims can one possibly put on a dress; and then add pleats?
Answer: Way less than this, actually.

  • AlisonHendryx

I love this. It’s whimsical, but kinda fierce, with the black and the metallic. She is on my Irrational Love List, though. I may not be unbiased.

  • ServoCrow

IN. With the caveat that Diane, along with Sienna Miller, is my favourite fashion gal. I’d much rather something like this than the boring stuff Aniston wears. Not to keep ragging on J-An, because it’s not meant to be an insult to HER, just her style, but yeah – I’ll even take Kruger’s fashion misses over Aniston’s style, because at least she’s interesting style-wise.

  • Mimi on the Hoops

the black feathers just look scraggly and cheap. The back is very silly. The blue is so drab – the whole thing is depressing.

  • OUT I like the idea of the pleated panels, but there is just too much of everything on this.

  • oneWEIRDword

She looks pretty iffy about it. If she was selling it, I’d say in, but she’s so nonplussed I’m saying out.

  • bleepblerp

I don’t like the dress at all, but I think she looks amazing in it. So, in, I guess.

  • LadyCelia

Until I read the word “pleats”, I hadn’t even noticed them. Had to go back to look. To my mind, that means way too much going on.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Out. I liked it until I saw the back.

  • Monabel

What do you mean? This is GREAT!

  • AliciaT

IN. It’s a fabulous dress and she looks stunning in it. The plissé panels, punctuated by feathers, make the dress. The clutch is perfect. Pity for the hair.

  • Greenlee Rose

Out. A walking cat tower, including a fake curtain for climbing.

  • marlie

In. I was feeling kind of “meh” about it, but when I saw the side view (the pleats), that changed my mind. I think it’s a really interesting dress, though they could have cut back on the fringe-y stuff.

  • minnye

I love the side pleats, the wispy feathers, that gorgeous pale blue and the shape. Not loving the dingles on the back straps, but I can live with them. IN.

  • FuhUgh

Windchime! Out! It would actually be really nice without the feather trim and the geegaws on the back.

  • Ssquared1105

Diane is better suited to make wonky Chanel work more than wonky Prada. I’ll give it an out because I agree with you, it’s weird but somehow expected.

  • BlairBear

Prada never met a nipple dart she didn’t love. I have the exact opposite reaction. Also it looks like their are zippers in the trim. Out.

  • GemFemme

IN from the front, OUT from the back.

  • Pound of Salt

In, the pleats ARE a nice detail!

  • ENerney

No ambivalence here! Totally hate it.

  • BobStPaul

I sort of hate the dress but she looks pretty fantastic (or fantastically pretty) in it so that makes it an in for me.

  • AnniNoone

What the actual fuck is that shit on her back? OUT.

  • Grumpy Girl

Two votes: I vote out because it’s just too much gewgaws for it to be pretty, but too pretty to be funky. My cat saw a picture and voted in, and asked why we couldn’t get a set for the family to wear sitting around the house for his amusement. Feathers! strings! beads! pale color on which to leave dark fur!–it’s a cat wonderland.

  • greyhoundgirl

I hate being tickled. I would have spent the night screaming. But the color is beautiful.

  • carolina_dawn

OUT, but with a chance to be IN. Take off the spiders and the geegaws and foofaraws, and it’s a beautiful dress that fits perfectly. Too bad!

  • Out. I actually don’t mind all the trim on the back, but I really dislike it on the neck and skirt–it feels wispy and out of proportion somehow.

  • pugluv

    I kinda love it….

  • Constant Reader

OUT. I was marginally on board until she turned around. The strap decoration is hideous.

  • Judy_S

I liked it in the thumbnail, but actually said “ick” as I scrolled through the closer shots. Get rid of the spider legs and it would be pretty enough, maybe.

  • Catherine

The fit is perfection and the color is divine, but the bits and bobs are just too much.

  • Byodo-In

    OUT No redeeming value.

  • Shawn EH

In! It’s sort of a Muppet moment, but she’s carrying it off.

  • GillianHolroyd

Oh definitely out. The straps are giving her back fat. Her hair and makeup are perfection as always.

  • Tarquin

A real tack-fest of a dress. Probably the worst thing I’ve ever seen her wear.

  • Jenne

The back reminds me of a belly dance skirt. And not a good one.

  • Cupcakes for Breakfast

Out. Too much crap hanging off of it. It makes me want to declutter.

  • Nancy Arseneault-Heald

    OUT – Too much wickity-whack.

  • Kaonashi

Out. At fist I thought, “Take the feathers away and this would be divine” but then she turned around and she has wind chimes on her back.

I rather like the dress, excessive frippery & geegaws & all, but find her incredibly bland and even more so in this dress. I realize she has the creed of “SERIOUS FASHIONISTA” but I still find her being worn by most dresses rather than wearing them herself.

  • Kamilaa

SPIDERS, OMG SPI… erm, nevermind. Not spiders, just way the hell too much unnecessary, and, quite frankly, alarming shit hanging off of an otherwise fairly typical Prada gown.

Out. In fact, all the way out of the building with this thing, just in case there are actual spiders in that trim.

  • evave2

OUT. The feathers look weird. In its defense it does not have a slit but a slap of blue material. And No Side Boob. YAH!

    But overall. OUT.

  • Brendan Faire

It would be a beautiful dress if it wasn’t covered in spiders.

  • Kate4queen

Out. It’s like a ratty curtain from a Western movie brothel

  • Robert Sanchez

Out. Overdone with too many elements. Strangely, the ostrich feathers feel both “not enough” and “too much” at the same time.

  • Get rid of those cheap looking feathers, and this works for me.

  • Little_Olive

And yes, it happens more and more to me also that the most “out there” dresses leave me cold. You can’t do crazy if you don’t do it perfect.

  • There are SPIDERS on her SHOULDERS. OUT.

  • lucasuk82

Out. Expected or not, it’s a gorgeous color on her. I could get behind the unusual shape or the crazy trim, but together she’s a party decoration.

  • Out. She’s beautiful but those feathers are squicking me out.

  • BarbWoodruff

This dress and the comments about it (SPIDERS!) made me laugh until tears came to my eyes. I’d give it an “in” just for making me laugh that much, but I can’t. This gets a big OUT from me. OMG! SPIDERS!

  • Bowildhaze

Me thinks someone went a little crazy at M&J Trimmings and had to buy $500 for a $20 discount and put it all on ONE dress.

  • carrie

Grandma denim blue. There’s a dustiness to this color that makes it look stale and, well, old. Otherwise I love the dress.

  • quiltrx

I’m going to have to go with a cautious OUT. I feel like I might like it better if all the foofaraw was up top, and the skirt didn’t have those eyelashes.

  • lsaspacey

I actually think it’s a case of not enough gee gaws, it seems half-assed to me.

  • Lorelski

The more I look at it, the more I love it.

  • Shyla

Out. Did she run through a bramble bush or get in a fight with her cat?

  • She looks like a trailer park front porch, complete with dead spider plants and wind-chimes. I actually love the trims, but that nothing blue just kills it. I like the idea of it in a white or pale green. OUT, because she can do better.

  • elephantasmagoric

I don’t like all that stuff hanging limply off her. The dress would be better without it. However, if you take it away, the dress has little point of interest. It’s pretty, but just pretty. No celeb wants to be just pretty. OUT.

  • Pato

IN for me. Even with all the noise and the fluff, it doesn’t forget its main target as a dress: cover all the ladyparts and make the user looks gorgeous. Considering the latest eye-assaults commited in the name of fashion, i rather have this kind of eff-ery.

  • E. D.

Out. Take off the feathers and the giant paillettes and it’s not bad.

  • SouthWrite1968

This looks like somebody found grandma’s box of sewing trim and decided to use it all rather than throwing anything away.

  • mila_8

Out, the color and texture of the dress make her skin look gross, which you know is not true.

  • LambeeBaby

I think the feathers on the front are throwing it off for me. They are just too distracting and the blue is sad

  • anyess

I just want all the designers to stay the hell out of Michaels’ for a while.

  • Sagecreek

I could sign on for the front or the back, but not both. OUT.

  • 42Sh

IN! It is fun and different and it flatters her figure. The clutch seems a bit too big.

  • Randy Noak

OUT. Looks like a bad etsy dream.

  • Badriya Al-Badi’a

Out. A lot of the elements work–the color, the pleating on the side, the basic shape, even the idea of outlining in black–but they do not come together as a whole. This dress doesn’t know what it wants to be. It might be a Muppet. It might be a belly dancer. It might be a deceptively simple evening gown. But it really can’t be all of those things at once.

  • Fred Vaughn

IN. She looks like had fun wearing it, at the very least.

  • Kara Keenan

The geegaws and rhinestones I can live with. The wispy feathers? They can go die in a fire.

  • avoir_du_chien

OUT. The black bits by the shoulders reminded me of make-your-own Halloween spider crafts. Took two of those from a four-year-old and stuck ’em on the dress.

The dress itself is nice, but it has too much hardware and dangles. Plus, the whole spider factor just makes it an instant NO.

  • Out! The feathery black bits just make me think of giant spiders on her shoulders and running up (or down) her dress. The other crap on the back straps is just too heavy. No. Just no.

  • snarkykitten

OUT because it’s creeping me the fuck out

  • oohsparkley!

    IN! Fun and flattering.

  • Lisa Frazier

OUT….dreamcatcher meets 9 to 5 pleated skirt. BLECH.

  • c8h10n4o2

Just looking at those pictures triggered a sneezing attack. Out.

  • rubyclaire

IN – Such interesting embellishments, the pleats are gorgeous, the color is great on her, and it fits like a glove.

  • frosty dufour

IN. Pleats save the day, although I’d have preferred a different color, and not sure about the poetically sad marabou.

  • mkconly

love it – tasteful, unusual, and so flattering!

  • macwell

    Out. Oouutt. I mean seriously.

  • Goldilocks322

“Bird girl #2” in a private school production of Seussical

  • VCR1

Out because of all that stuff hanging off the dress. The dress itself is so pretty but the trim makes it bad. With totally different trim it would be a great dress.

  • Liliter

  • f

I love it, very extravagant dress on a beautiful woman. BUT a sleeker updo, a bright colorful lipstick and a big beaming smile would have made this drop dead gorgeous…. maybe she’s freezing.

  • conniemd

In, because it’s a crazy dress, but it’s working on her.

  • DuBey2

Too much Rib Cage!! I actually like the black bits (front) to offset that dusty blue, but no because of the ribcage exposure on the side and the craft store straps on the back.

  • DrMomLovesLife

Out. Definitely too much rib cage. Besides that, this looks like a blackbird attacked the Twitter bird.

  • Andrea

IN. But I’ll bet those little thingamabobs dangling along her back tickle like mad.

  • Alexandria Nichandros

OUT. No question. You cannot cannot cannot be an IN with hair and makeup that bad. Her head looks SO sad. Nice dress though. Neck down looks gorgeous and interesting.
